FIRST, THE GOOD NEWS - THINGS WIL BE GETTING SIMPLER FOR GUN PURCHASES

As VCDL predicted, Governor McAuliffe has signed two more pro-gun bills into law, both of which become effective on July 1:

HB 206, Delegate Webert, removes the requirement for a 2nd ID when purchasing a firearm

HB 810, Delegate Lingamfelter, removes the requirement for proof of citizenship when purchasing an “assault firearm”

NOW, THE BAD NEWS - MORE VETOES

The Governor has vetoed some more pro-gun bills:

HB 560, Delegate Lingamfelter, clarifies that intent to induce fear is a key component of brandishing a firearm HB 766, Delegate Gilbert, turns a protection order into a concealed handgun permit for 45-days SB 626, Senator Vogel, turns a protection order into a concealed handgun permit for 45-days HB 1234, Delegate Lingamfelter, allows school security officers to carry a firearm in the performance of their duties

So, the Governor doesn’t want the brandishing law clarified, doesn’t want a battered woman to be able to defend herself, and doesn’t want our children protected by armed security officers (but the Governor just signed a bill allowing judges with no CHP and no training to carry on K-12 school property - go figure).

One more thing: the battered spouse is in the most danger of being killed during the first few days after filing a protection order! Gilbert and Vogel’s solution was perfect for that, but the Governor is willing to risk someone else’s life for political payback.

Sadly HB 766 and SB 626 are dead. BUT HB 560 and HB 1234 can be saved with a veto override.

ACTION ITEM - WE DON’T HAVE TO TAKE THE VETOES LAYING DOWN
