Virginia Sheriffs Institute question

Post by AlanM »

I just received a letter and with a "membership card" requesting a donation.

Their slick looking web site has an article about this mailing:
https://vasheriffsinstitute.org/2016/03 ... uary-2016/

What's their story?
Are they legitimate?
Any stats on how much of the donations ACTUALLY get to the families of the fallen LEOs?

My only question is, if I put one of their decals on my car will it get me out of a traffic ticket?

Up here in NOVA I do not belive the sheriff's can actually pull you over. Their duty is pretty much summons, jail guards, and inmate transport. Traffic violations are left to the VSP and local PDs.

In Loudoun County, the local PD is the Loudoun County Sheriffs department, and they can definitely pull you over.

Years ago, when I still lived in Ohio, I was here in Albemarle county visiting my daughter and was pulled over by a sheriff's deputy due to a burned out license plate light.
(got a warning)
(It was the holiday season and I'm sure he was fishing for a DUI. I don't drink.)

Yes, they can and will perform a traffic stop.

Without researching it, I'm pretty sure that any Deputy can pull you over in Virginia, as long as they're in their jurisdiction. Whether or not it's standard practice is something else, entirely.

OK I looked into it briefly. I slighty misspoke. In FFX and PW the sheriff's can perform traffic enforcement but typically leave it to the PD and VSP kinda drawing a line of we'll do this stuff you guys do that stuff. I can certainly see in other jurisdictions with no PD or a small PD the sheriff's may perform more duties.

Found this: Programs: 66% Fund Raising: 20% Administrative: 14%

http://www.bbb.org/charity-reviews/rich ... nd-va-7487

14% for administrative expenses is pretty good.

It is good for a charitable organization, but that is still 1/3 of donations not giving relief. As others have said of themselves, I donate directly to my causes.

The Virginia Sheriff's Association is a legitimate organization. They represent the sheriff departments across the state while lobbying in Richmond. In areas where there are both Police and Sheriff the police usually handles all criminal activities and the Sheriff take care of the courts, prisoner transport, civil process and other non-criminal activities. This does not mean they can not make an arrest as they are duly sworn law enforcement officers for their jurisdictions. As I understand it if they see a crime in progress they must act on that crime especially if life is endangered.

Regardless of what the relationships are between Sheriffs and Police, the question here really is are they a legitimate organization to donate to. Could be depending on what your preferences are regarding administrative costs. Personally, I'd like to see lower Admin costs, but this group seems to serve a larger audience.
