Our first time hunting deer - and success!

Post by Mindflayer »

A sunset on a cold November morning with my hunting partner.

A new friend took us to some private land he hunts and we bagged 3 deer! We left one for the landowner, but still took home two large does at about 150# each. Same friend showed us how to field dress and quarter it up, and then walked us through how we'd want to butcher it in a few days.

We had a LOT of fun!

Congrats on your success! That's quite a haul for the first time out.

I just started three years ago - my main goal was to learn how not to rely on Food Lion for my survival. The prices of beef have only amplified my need to learn.

I still have much to learn - but I am getting there as this year has been the most successful so far. This was my first year of using a Muzzleloader - ever - and bagged a deer on the first day of the season with the first shot ever from my muzzleloader.

Never butchered my own deer - I take it to a slaughter house where I just request "steaks, burger with beef fat, sausage with maple flavoring, and roasts". Comes all packaged nicely and ready for the freezer.

My wife has been learning various ways to utilize the meat, and my daughter thanks the deer in prayer at the table. It's been a good family bonding experience!

I need to learn how to hunt. For the same reason as you! Congratulations!

I was hoping to someday report my first deer here as well. Sounds like I should start my own thread should that day come. I could call it, "My first first time hunting deer...", just to be unique.

Running out of venison! Hope to be able to get out this year, but with a six-month old, that may be hard to find the time.
