Exclusive: Something Must Be Done!

Television reporter Alison Parker and cameraman Adam Ward were murdered in a surprise attack, shot to death while conducting a live interview for CBS Roanoke affiliate WDBJ 7. The killer, who I will not name, was a former reporter, terminated from the same station because of bizarre and aggressive behavior. He fled the scene and killed himself when police caught up with him.

Naturally, the blood-dancers came out in force, and just as naturally, before all the facts were known. After all, the killings were dramatic, they were recorded on the murderer’s phone, and (you can almost hear the “progressive” jubilation), the killer used a gun!

“Will America finally do something to stop our gun-fueled carnage?” The Washington Post’s editorial board asked in a hand-wringing headline.

“Something”…? Like what?

The WaPo scribes admitted they didn’t know how the killer got his gun, or if any proposed citizen disarmament edicts would have made a difference. They nonetheless demanded background checks, which the killer had passed when he purchased his gun. They demanded bans on “wholly unnecessary high-capacity magazines,” even though the killer did not use them. They demanded the government fund “studies” to come up with predetermined conclusions for anti-gun researchers to justify further gun edicts. Tellingly, they also admitted that the situational irrelevance of the crime they were responding to and the “solutions” they offered made no difference to them.

“t doesn’t matter,” they insisted. “Tragedies such as these remind us of the easy, brutal efficiency that guns bring to the business of killing.” That’s because something must be done.

Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe called for reintroducing failed bills to disarm “people who commit various domestic violence misdemeanors,” and a one-handgun-a-month restriction, neither of which would have had any effect on the murders. But something must be done.

“The president does not advocate changing the Second Amendment,” Josh Earnest, the White House Press Secretary with the oxymoronic name weighed in. “He believes we can actually take common-sense steps that are entirely consistent with protections in the Second Amendment but would have an impact in reducing gun violence in this country.”

Like … you know, something.

“We have got to do something about gun violence in America,” Hillary Clinton declared. “I believe we are smart enough, we are compassionate enough, to figure out how to balance the legitimate Second Amendment rights with preventive measures and control measures so that whatever motivated this murderer, who eventually took his own life, we will not see more deaths—needless, senseless deaths.”

In other words, something must be done. That and what difference does it make?

She was appealing to her base, fanatics brought out of the woodwork, who added another predictable dynamic into the public discourse—angrily blaming gun owners, or as they like to call us, “ammosexuals” (and worse). With that mob, “blood on their hands” became the preferred meme over “something must be done,” although the fact that the killer didn’t fit a profile convenient to advancing their narrative proved somewhat of a dampener, or at least something they weren’t eager to talk about.

It could not escape notice that when an evil racist lunatic murdered black people in a South Carolina church, an incident that was a catalyst for the Roanoke killer, the “progressive” reaction, in addition to blaming guns and whites, was to ban Confederate flags from public displays and to call for the Taliban-like destruction of Southern heritage monuments. That there was no similar reaction when it was revealed the Roanoke killer was black, an occasional gay prostitute, an Obama supporter, and the author of a “manifesto” proposing a race war, said much about the double-standards of the left. Still, it only brought us back full-circle to something must be done—and anyone questioning that has blood on their hands.

One person who intends to do something is the father of the slain reporter. Andy Parker is now making getting more gun laws passed his “life’s work.” Curiously, he also says he’s buying a gun because “a lot of people take exception” to his new mission.

In a way, he’s the perfect face for the anti-gun movement, as all of us were sickened by the terror his beautiful daughter endured as she was being murdered. We who are parents, and who treasure our children above our own lives, share feelings of empathy and sympathy as we try to fathom the crippling horror, anguish and helplessness that he must be reliving in every waking moment, and in nightmares we can only pray we never dream. Our natural inclination is to want to offer comfort to someone in such pain. So Parker is the right man for the job because decent people can only imagine his loss and can’t bring themselves to get into a fight with him, even if he’s bringing it to us.

That said, we have to fight, not against the man, but certainly against the ideology he now represents. We’re sorry for his loss, but it’s not our fault. It does not give him a claim on our rights, and it does not make the ideas he promulgates above reproach. So we can start by noting his getting a gun because of their personal protective benefits is a useful admission, one that hardly fits with what the other antis would have us believe. It’s also fair to regard his insinuations as insulting. If anyone had made death threats against him for his activism, he would have filed police reports and, if they turned out to be from misguided gun activists, an elated media would have blasted them out as headline news.

The other thing we can and should do is look at Parker’s past, because his transformation into a gun law crusader was not so much a road to Damascus conversion as it was a direction he was already receptive to traveling in, albeit he never had the motivation before now to devote his life to the issue. Back in 2007, Parker ran for the Virginia House of Delegates as a Democrat. At the time, Virginia Citizens Defense League, the state’s premiere grassroots gun rights group, sent its political questionnaire to all candidates. Their tally sheet shows no responses to the questions next to his listed name, which, per VCDL, “frequently indicates indifference, if not outright hostility, toward the right to keep and bear arms.”

As long as we’re looking at survivors, it’s also instructive to note not all have emerged with the same sentiments. A case in point is Tim Gardner, who put things in their proper perspective for Fox News. He’s the husband of Vicki Gardner, the woman wounded in the attack as she was being interviewed.

“He was bound and determined to try to make a name for himself on live TV because he failed at it so many times,” Gardner said. “So no, I don’t blame the gun, I blame the guy that was holding the gun.”

Unfortunately, Andy Parker does not share that view, and he’s bound and determined that something must be done, even if he doesn’t know what.

“In my case, the answer is: ‘Whatever it takes,’” he wrote in an editorial carried by the Associated Press, and picked up as a slogan by Michael Bloomberg’s Everytown opportunists.

As something must be done to protect against infringements, that’s what gun owners must be prepared to do to as well.

2. VCDL Eastern Shore group forming

On Thursday night I ran a VCDL meeting in Onley, Virginia, on the Eastern Shore. We had a great dinner and then proceeded with the VCDL meeting.

Many at the meeting commented that they had been wondering who the other VCDL members were on the Eastern Shore and that got me to thinking.

At one time VCDL did not have much of a presence in the Roanoke area because it was so far from where most of the VCDL Board of Directors lived.

VCDL Board member Al Steed, along with Executive members like John Wilburn, Dave Hicks, Dave Knight, Ken Modica, as well as members like Ed French and many others have opened up SW Virginia to VCDL over the years, holding local events like dinners and shooting competitions.

The Eastern Shore is much like Roanoke used to be in its remoteness, so why not organize and grow local membership?

I suggested to those at the Onley meeting that they pass a list around and everyone put down their name, email address, and other contact information. Member John Hilton set up a private Facebook page just for the Eastern Shore, where VCDL members can communicate and set up events.

3. McLean Citizens Association to hear committee report on November 4th

The McLean Citizens Association (MCA) said they are going to hear a report from the ad hoc committee they formed at the last meeting on whether the MCA should get involved with trying to negotiate some kind of deal with NOVA Firearms, which opened a new facility near a school.

Member Ronald Kriston Jr. came up with a beautiful and simple compromise that I wish I had thought of: move the school!

So far, based on the MCA’s web site (http://mcleancitizens.org/), the meeting is scheduled on Wednesday, November 4th at 7:30 PM. The meeting is being held at the same location as last time:

Outside money on both sides of gun control debate elevates issue in 10th District race

Sturtevant, in his television ad, does not mention the NRA endorsement. “Sturtevant is running away from his NRA endorsement,” said Lori Haas, a Chesterfield resident, but not in the 10th District. Her daughter Emily survived slight head wounds in the 2007 mass shooting that killed 32 students and teachers at Virginia Tech.

Brown, the Republican candidate’s campaign manager, said the NRA endorsement “is noted on our website, and in mail and radio and other communications.”

“The fact is this: Glen has a common-sense position on the 2nd Amendment,” he said. “He supports the fundamental, constitutional right of law abiding citizens to bear arms. That is where he stands.”The Virginia Citizens Defense League, based in Chesterfield, has not endorsed any candidate in the 10th District race. Only one of the four candidates, Libertarian Carl R. Loser, a gun-rights advocate, returned the organization’s survey, which is required for endorsement by its political action committee.

VCDL President Philip Van Cleave issued a statement to members this week to make clear that he has not personally endorsed a candidate in the race, as Brown had told some of its members.

“Let me be perfectly clear: I DO NOT GIVE PERSONAL ENDORSEMENTS. PERIOD,” he said in an email alert to members on Tuesday.

Brown apologized on Wednesday for suggesting that Van Cleave supported Sturtevant.

“While I haven’t used the word ‘endorsed’ I have said I personally believed Mr. Van Cleave and other members of the VCDL were generally supportive,” he said in an email. “Hearing that he is saying otherwise I definitely retract those statements, and I do apologize for any confusion they may have caused.”

6. Governor McAuliffe dodges question on his latest executive order on guns
**************************************************

Member Dave Briggman got a question in during the last “Ask the Governor” show on the recent gun ban in state-agency buildings that was instituted by an executive order. Dave asked if the Governor could provide a case where a lawful gun owner had come into a state-agency building and killed state employees and also what legislative authority was given to the Governor to institute such a ban.

McAuliffe’s answer was sad. The only case he could come up with was some years ago when a Delegate was unloaded his gun in his office in the General Assembly and the gun accidentally went off and hit a bullet-proof vest that was being used as a backstop. The Governor does even realize that the General Assembly is NOT a state-agency.

On his authority for the ban, he said, falsely, that the U.S. Supreme Court said he could so such a thing with an executive order! The Court said NO SUCH THING. All they said was a ban in “sensitive” government buildings was not unconstitutional. That doesn’t mean that what McAuliffe did was necessarily LEGAL UNDER VIRGINIA LAW.

7. Columnist makes silly case supporting state-agency gun ban
**************************************************

Roanoke Times Columnist Dan Casey talked to some workers in state agency buildings to see if they were now frightened since openly carried guns are banned in their buildings. The answers he got were “no.” Of course, if he had asked those same people if they worried about being in those same buildings a month ago, before the ban, they would have also said, “no.”

Here is the comment I left below the opinion piece:

Sigh. What's your point, Dan?

The students at Virginia Tech, the congregation at the church in South Carolina, the people at the movie in Louisiana, the people at the movie in Aurora, the soldiers at the Tennessee recruiting station, the students at Columbine, and all the others who were massacred in gun-free zones, didn't feel apprehension while in those zones either. Well, that is until they were being slaughtered, with no help in sight.

You are making a rookie mistake of confusing "feeling safe" with "being safe." The two have no connection and that confusion can cost you your life. Ostriches feel safe when they stick their head in the sand and even a child laughs at such foolishness. But, hey, if that works for you, knock yourself out, but it doesn't work for me.

There is never an advantage to taking away the right of good people to be able to defend themselves - never. And if you think gun owners are going to be happy about that, you are greatly mistaken. Especially when the disarmament is pure politcal threater by a governor who wants to be the next Vice President and also owes Michael Bloomberg a big wet-kiss for a million dollar donation.

8. Fredericksburg to have another illegal gun-buy up in December. Good chance to buy some guns cheaply

Fredericksburg wants to break Virginia state law again this year and will be doing so on December 12 with the help of their police department. That’s when Fredericksburg will be part of an illegal gun buy-up that will destroy any guns that are turned in.

This might be a good opportunity for those who want to buy some guns very cheaply to do so before those guns end up in the hands of the police and then unlawfully destroyed. Last year citizens parked in front of the police station and offered those interested better money for the guns that they were taking to the police department.

CBS Evening News Airs Pro-Gun Rights Segment Decrying Gun-Free Zones

Friday's CBS Evening News actually gave a platform to a pro-gun rights
conservative, just four days after it aired a segment from gun control
advocate Andy Parker, who attacked the National Rifle Association as a bunch
of "cowards" who were "blocking...sensible gun legislation." The segment
featured the executive director of the Gun Owners of America, Larry Pratt,
who contended that "the problem of mass murder in this country is the
gun-free zone." Pratt later underlined that "an armed citizen — a good guy
with a gun — is the way you stop a crime." [video below]

Anchor Scott Pelley led into the segment from the pro-Second Amendment
activist by noting that "one of Vice President Biden's assignments was to
come up with recommendations for reducing gun violence. Well, we've been
asking for suggestions as well, in our series, 'Voices Against Violence.'"

Pratt first gave his take on gun-free zones, and emphasized that "even while
our violent crime rate has been going down, more Americans are owning guns —
but not in gun-free zones." He also pointed out his organization's support
for proposed federal legislation that "would treat your concealed carry
permit the same way as your driver's licenses. If you have it in one
jurisdiction, then it's going to be good anywhere in the country.”

Millennials love guns as shooting sports rapidly gain popularity in high schools

Lindsay Martin first picked up a rifle to go deer hunting with her father, but it was an afternoon she spent with him a year later, shooting clay pigeons in her backyard, that set her passion for shooting sports.

The rising senior at Glen Allen High School in Virginia is now establishing herself as a competitive shooter with Olympic aspirations. Her own school doesn’t have a team, so she joined the Dusters, a trapshooting team at nearby Fort Lee. Her father is the coach, she is the only girl on the team, and she’s a rising star.

“People know me as the shotgun shooter,” the 17-year-old said.

She’s one of thousands of teens who have picked up the sport in recent years, making it one of the fastest-growing sports for high schools. But it’s also popular with community teams, such as the Dusters.

Tom Wondrash, national director of Scholastic Clay Target Program, a branch of the Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation (SSSF), thinks that the sport’s rapid growth is due to its inclusivity and opportunity for participation.

“What separates shooting sports from stick-and-ball sports is that when it’s time for our kids to go to a tournament, all the kids can compete — heavy, thin, tall, short, fast, slow, boy or girl — it doesn’t make them any different,” Mr. Wondrash said. “That’s what really lends itself to our sport.”

The SSSF has programs in 42 states and has seen participation grow from about 6,000 students four years ago to 13,000 now, Mr. Wondrash said.

Competitive shooting has become so popular and accepted in certain communities that some high schools award varsity letters for trapshooting. National organizations like the SSSF help students assemble teams, train coaches to teach athletes how to safely fire a gun and organize competitions and championships for teams.

Lindsay’s team, established through SSSF, has stayed about the same size, with 10 students, but she said she’s seen an increase in interest outside of school. She is a fan of women learning to shoot, and even teaches women how to fire a shotgun at her local gun range in Charles City County.

The USA State High School Clay Target League, another trapshooting youth organization, works slightly differently than SSSF. While SSSF encourages community-based organizations in addition to the school-recognized teams, the USA State High School Clay Target League ensures that all of their teams are incorporated into the school’s extracurricular offerings.

In the past eight years, they have seen their membership jump from 30 kids to almost 10,000. Some teams have as few as five athletes, and others have more than 80. The teams are coed, and students with physical disabilities are welcome. Teams only compete against other teams of similar sizes.

“It’s the safest high school sport,” John Nelson, the league’s vice president, said. “In 14 years we’ve never had an injury. None whatsoever. We’ve put more than 24,000 students through the program, pulled the trigger more than 12 million times, and never had an injury.”

The league is located in only three states — Minnesota, Wisconsin and North Dakota — and is expanding to three more within the next year.

Lindsay specializes in trapshooting, which is shooting clay pigeons as they fly away from the shooter. The sport is a cousin of skeet shooting and sporting clays, similar events where the “birds” are flung from different directions.

Lindsay’s preferred gun is a Krieghoff K-80, which she uses for trap, skeet and sporting clays, switching out the barrels to change the gauge to fit the event.

Her father, Richard Martin, not only coaches the Dusters but is involved with the local 4-H club in Four Rivers, which has increased the number of young shooters on its team to accommodate the interest. He said other local 4-H clubs have waitlists of children eager to take up the sport.

“I didn’t actually compete prior to [Lindsay],” Mr. Martin said. “Once she started showing such a knack for it, such a natural ability, that’s when we got involved and started looking around.”

Considering the main athletic equipment for the sport is a gun, there has not been a lot of backlash to school-sponsored trapshooting from gun control advocates. For example, gun controls in Britain are so strict that its Olympic shooting team had to train for the 2012 London Olympics abroad, and the government had to grant a special waiver for the contest even to take place.

But Ladd Everitt, director of communications for the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, said there’s nothing wrong with shooting clays.

“If a student in high school enjoys that activity, God bless them,” Mr. Everitt said. “That’s not something that’s of any concern to us. That’s supervised shooting, and that’s the way to do it — with adults in a supervised session.”

The reason people might oppose trapshooting is a lack of understanding about the sport and guns, Mr. Wondrash said.

The USA league prefers to have students go through their state’s firearms trainings, which are often hunting-oriented, to help them learn safety skills. SSSF doesn’t require students to go through their state’s firearms training.

“Probably upward of 50 percent of our athletes are not hunters, they’re just target shooters,” Mr. Wondrash said. “Just because they’re shooting a gun doesn’t mean they’re killing stuff. It’s a whole different world.”

Growth has been explosive in the last few years, and Mr. Nelson feels certain that it can be maintained.

“We expect we’ll double the number of states every year for the next few years because of mass interest in the league, its popularity with kids and families, and it’s a very affordable sport,” Mr. Nelson said.

Competitive shooting is also an Olympic sport, which is another reason that anti-gun activists probably do not oppose it, Mr. Wondrash said. The SSSF feeds into the United States Olympic shooting team, and the program has produced Olympic gold medalists.

“You’d think we would run into more [opposition], but the honest truth is not at all — very little, if any,” Mr. Wondrash said. “How can you argue with an Olympic sport? The kids have got to start somewhere, you know.”

Lindsay plans to attend a college that supports a competitive shooting team, and she hopes to qualify for the Olympic team. In order to begin preparations for qualifications, she will begin focusing on learning international skeet and bunker trap. But she is not alone — most of her friends are shooters too, and they all share the same dream.

“It’s always going to be a team thing,” Lindsay said. “When you’re on the field, it might feel like an individual thing, but when we shoot, we all shoot on the same squad. If someone misses, they might get down on themselves, and we have to pick them up. There’s so many people helping you that it makes it a team thing.”

Gun Free NYC can't save these people from vicious dog attack
September 12, 2015

The video above was uploaded to YouTube yesterday, and shows a horrific scene: A man on the ground, being viciously attacked by two dogs… and the dog’s owner has zero control over them the entire time.

The video goes on to show the dogs attacking other people after they were temporarily pushed away from their first victim. At one point in the video, there are 14 adults in frame… yet they’re all still powerless to successfully intervene. And the owner is absolutely useless. Instead of trying to pull them back, he should have been giving them hard kicks to whatever area of them he could. Sure they’re his dogs, but something’s gotta give.

The details of what happened following the incident are difficult to track down. According to the uploader, the dogs were tranquilized and the owner arrested. We’ll try to find out more information to see what’s transpired, and we hope the victims are able to quickly heal from their injuries.

If you’re ever in a horrible situation such as this one, the only way out is to fight with all you have. Dogs in that state of mind are not going to stop fighting. Period. Be prepared to be bit, and bit hard.

Yet another "Why I Carry" reason.

Vulgar Everytown defames NRA commentator

Michael Bloomberg’s various gun control front groups have long had a reputation for being very duplicitous, from making false claims about the number of school shootings to falsifying their very numbers.

Now they’re stooping to attack popular YouTube celebrity Colion Noir for something he didn’t say about the shooting of two journalist last week by one of their former co-workers in a racial attack.

Everytown tweeted:

“NRA Host Tells Parents of Murdered Journalists: Don’t ‘Become So Emotional.’ Appalling, even for the NRA."

But that isn’t remotely what Noir said.

Noir’s actual words on the shooting were:

“And to the parents of Alison Parker and Adam Ward, I have no right to tell any parent how to grieve for the loss of their child. Grief-inspired advocacy can be extremely effective and powerful and I say run full speed to find a way to end violence like this. However, sometimes in a fight we can become so emotional everyone and thing starts looking like the enemy, even if they’re there to help us. I’m deeply sorry for your loss.”

There is is what Colion Noir actually said, and what Everytown claims that he said.

The two statements could not be more different, and Everytown’s statement is so divorced from context of the statement from which it was ripped as to be fraudulent.

Sadly, this sort of dishonestly isn’t new territory for Everytown, as they are currently being sued for defamation.

Earlier this week the Associated Press published a story about Oregon's new gun control laws and the anti-gun advocates behind them.

In the piece John Feinblatt, the president of former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg's anti-gun Everytown, was quoted saying gun control is a winning issue and that his organization has been successful at bringing home victories on gun control platforms.

"We are seeing it again and again, that this is actually a winning issue and you can vote to protect the American public and make the American public safe, and your political career will flourish," said John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety, an advocacy group backed by millions from billionaire Michael Bloomberg, the former New York mayor.

The facts show otherwise. Not only is gun control a losing issue among the majority of Americans, Everytown is losing to the NRA by significant margins.

First, lets take a look at some numbers on legislation over the past three years. In 2013, 98 NRA backed pro-gun and pro-hunting bills were signed into law in 33 states. That same year, just 21 gun control bills in just 10 states were passed and signed into law. In 2014, it's a similar story. That year 80 NRA backed pro-gun and pro-hunting bills became law in 32 states while just nine gun control laws were implemented in just five states. The NRA won that year 10 times over. And finally, so far in 2015 there have been a whopping 93 pro-gun and hunting bills singed into law in 33 different states. Just six gun control laws in three states have been passed. During the landslide 2014 midterm elections, 90 percent of NRA backed candidates won.

Now, onto public opinion.

Just this week a new CNN poll showed the majority of Americans do not believe guns are too easy to purchase. The majority of the public now believes gun rights should be protected rather than infringed upon with more gun control and that guns make people safer, not less safe, according to Pew Research. Finally, gun ownership among women and minorities is rapidly expanding in addition to involvement in the shooting sports.

Bloomberg's Everytown isn't winning and gun control isn't a winning issue, despite what gun control activists may claim to the media.

The U.S. government is fighting to keep details of how its own federal gun agents let Mexican drug cartels buy rifles in Arizona illegally out of an upcoming murder trial in which two men will be tried for the killing of U.S. Border Patrol agent Brian Terry who died after he ran into men carrying those same illegal guns.

In a court filing Monday, prosecutors are trying to keep some details about the guns found at the slain agent’s murder scene away from the jury.

Terry, 40, was part of the Border Patrol’s elite BORTAC unit. In December 2010, the group of agent’s was patrolling an area outside of Nogales, Ariz., named Mesquite Seep. They were looking for a rip-off crew comprised of men from Sinaloa who were roaming the border region in search of drug smugglers to rob. A firefight broke out. Terry was struck by gunfire and died at the scene. One of the rip-off crew members, Manuel Osorio-Arellanes, was wounded in the exchange.

Two guns found at the crime scene, AK-47 variants, came from a gunstore in Glendale, Ariz. Prosecutors acknowledge that those two rifles were part of a scandalous Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives program, Operation Fast and Furious. But FBI ballistics experts were never able to tie the rounds that killed Terry to either gun.

Now, the United States wants to keep Operation Fast and Furious out of the murder trial.

Monday’s filing states:

“The defendants should be precluded from mentioning Operation Fast and Furious.”

In the filing, the U.S. acknowledges that two firearms used by members of the rip-off crew were recovered at the scene of the murder.

But prosecutor Laura Duffy writes:

“Informing the jurors in this case of the connection between the firearms and the "Fast and Furious" investigation will serve no legitimate purpose because that connection is irrelevant to the charges against the defendants.”

Former Drug Enforcement agent Jeff Prather now teaches self-defense and weapons training. He was not involved with the gun-walking operation but has worked as a liaison between the ATF and the DEA.

“I would ask you. Does it make any reasonable, rational, logical sense to separate the probable murder weapon from the murder case, unless you are trying to cover something up?”

That has long been a criticism of the Justice Department's gunwalking scandal. 1,400 guns were lost and s some were used in murders in Mexico. Former Attorney General Eric Holder faced much of that criticism.

“This is our former Attorney General who first said there was no Fast and Furious. And then said he didn't know about it. And then admitted that he knew about it,” Prather said.

Two men will stand trial for Terry's murder. Ivan Soto Barraza and Jesus Lionel Sanchez Mesa.

Both men were captured in Mexico and extradited to the U.S. They have pled not guilty to first degree murder.

The recruiter of the rip-off crew was Rosario Burboa Alvarez. In early August, Burboa escaped the death penalty when he pleaded guilty to first degree murder.

A spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney’s Office in San Diego, which is prosecuting the case in Tucson, said Duffy’s office would let the court filing speak for itself. She declined to answer specific questions as to why the U.S. was trying to keep the scandal out of the murder trial.

A federal judge will hear the prosecutor’s arguments before the trial begins.

A few recent high-profile mass shootings have put gun control back in the news. Last week, as Congress returned from recess, gatherings were organized nationwide by Moms Demand Action, part of the Everytown for Gun Safety organization funded by former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

One of those gatherings was here in Las Vegas, as reported by the Review-Journal's Wesley Juhl. Dozens of Las Vegas gun control activists rallied Thursday evening to promote expanded background checks, with state senators joining families and activists near a bus stop on the corner of West Sahara Avenue and Fort Apache Road.

Background checks can help prevent tragedies, particularly when they keep guns out of the hands of domestic violence offenders. In fact, the 2015 Nevada Legislature passed Senate Bill 175, which prohibits any person who has been convicted of domestic violence from buying or owning firearms and stipulates that anyone subject to an order of protection cannot buy or acquire a gun, either. Further, Senate Bill 240 passed, requiring swifter reporting to the state's background check database of people who have been adjudicated mentally incompetent, among other measures.

But for background checks to work, governments have to maintain offender databases. Nevada's database is woefully behind, as noted in a 2014 Review-Journal report on a study of more than 800,000 criminal cases, some dating back 20 years.

Regardless, as has been shown countless times, criminals are not going to follow any gun control law. Despite some of the nation's stiffest gun-ownership restrictions, Chicago has had a rash of gun deaths in recent years, so much so that researchers from Duke University and the University of Chicago conducted a study to determine where the guns were coming from. As the Washington Free Beacon's Stephen Gutowski reported, the study — to be published in the October edition of Preventive Medicine — consisted of interviews with 99 inmates at Chicago's Cook County Jail who had illegally possessed a gun within six months of their incarceration. The study found that most criminals only acquired guns from people they knew and trusted — almost exclusively from family, friends, fellow gang members, etc.

In other words, background checks do not deter criminals from obtaining weapons. Expanded background checks will do nothing to keep such criminals from perpetrating gun violence.

Mr. Juhl noted that Moms Demand Action is seeking support for the 2016 state ballot initiative expanding background checks. But as the Chicago study shows, what this restriction will do is further clamp down on law-abiding citizens. It will not affect the criminal who has plenty of means to obtain weapons illegally.

The outrage against gun violence is understandable. But expanded background checks, by themselves, won't solve this problem.

It’s always tradition in the Miss America pageant to ask some hard hitting questions to test the knowledge of the contestant. Last night, Miss South Carolina, Daja Dial, got a tough question that her own state has had to deal with in very real ways.

The judges asked her the following question:

“Do you support a ban on military-style assault weapons?”

And here was her response:

“If we teach people the proper way to use guns, then we will reduce the risk of having gun-related accidents. It starts with education.”

Washington (CNN)Across three domestic issues that are shaping up to be more important to the 2016 presidential election than they were in 2012 -- gun control, illegal immigration and abortion -- polling generally suggests Democrats have the upper hand in terms of public opinion, but a new CNN/ORC Poll finds the nuances in views on these issues don't always favor one party over the other.

All three have become increasingly important to voters and prominent within the campaign itself and could come up during Wednesday's Republican debate hosted by CNN in Simi Valley, California.

In June 2011, 22% of voters called gun policy an "extremely important" issue in their vote for president, that's risen 20 points since to 42%. Likewise, 29% called illegal immigration a top issue in June 2011, that's up 10 points to 39%, while the share calling abortion an extremely important issue is up 7 points to 27%. Here's a look at where the public stands on each.

Gun policy

Most polling has shown the public broadly in favor of expanded background checks for gun buyers and preventing those with mental health issues from purchasing guns, but the new poll shows majorities think current laws are about right or even too harsh, and doubt that expanded background checks would keep guns out of the hands of the mentally ill or convicted criminals.

Overall, 41% say existing laws make it too easy for people to buy guns, down from 56% saying so about a month after the shooting deaths of 27 people at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut. About half, 49%, say current laws are about right, and 10% that they make it too difficult to buy a gun.

These mixed overall views mask sharp divides by sex, partisanship, age and urbanity. Among women, 52% say the current laws make it too easy to buy a gun, while just 30% of men agree. Two-thirds of Republicans, 65%, think current laws are about right, just 28% of Democrats agree. And a majority of seniors, 51%, say it's too easy to get a gun, while only 37% of those under age 50 think the same. Urban residents are more apt than suburbanites or rural residents to say it's too easy to get a gun, 46% who live in urban areas say that compared with 40% in the suburbs and 37% in rural areas.

At the same time, many express doubts that expanded gun laws would be able to prevent those with mental health problems from buying guns (44% see that as likely, 56% unlikely), or that such laws would keep guns out of the hands of convicted criminals (42% say that's likely, 58% unlikely). But most also say it wouldn't necessarily make it harder for a law-abiding citizen without mental health problems to buy one, 57% say it's unlikely to do that.

Even among those who say it is now too easy to buy a gun, just small majorities believe that implementing more comprehensive background checks for all gun purchases would be likely to stop gun purchases by the mentally ill (53%) or convicted criminals (55%).

President Barack Obama receives mostly negative reviews for his handling of gun policy, 59% disapprove of his handling of the issue on which he said he's been the "most frustrated and most stymied" during his presidency; just 35% approve of his work. That's worsened since a June poll, and nears his 2014 low of 33% approval on it. That drop off comes particularly among liberals. In the new poll, just 53% of liberals approve of Obama's handling of gun policy, down from 63% in June. Among moderates (44% then, 41% now) and conservatives (23% then, 19% now), the declines have been smaller.

In July 2014, the city of New Orleans agreed to settle a lawsuit filed by the NRA and Second Amendment Foundation after the city’s Police Superintendent, P.Edwin Compass, ordered an illegal and unconstitutional gun confiscation after Hurricane Katrina. You can read more about the lawsuit here.

In a press conference, Compass, said, “No one will be able to be armed. We will take all weapons. Only law enforcement will be allowed to have guns.”

It is not the only time in modern history where government ordered a wide-scale gun confiscation. In 1941, President Franklin Roosevelt declared that all Japanese “aliens” living in the United States were to be unarmed.

Now, some have a warranted fear of a future nationwide gun confiscation. In fact, it may be already starting. In July, 2015, the Shooter’s Log reported about a new gun control measure handed down by the Obama Administration which would add hundreds of thousands of Americans to the “unauthorized to own a firearm” list by enacting a rule in which people who’s Social Security disability checks are handled by other person means they aren’t able to own firearms. Certainly, we know that President Obama would love a country without guns. He has said numerous times how his personal biggest frustration and disappointment during his reign has been that he failed to do anything about “gun violence.” In June 2014, in a conversation with Tumblr founder, David Karp, Obama let his true feelings to light:

“A couple of decades ago Australia had a mass shooting similar to Columbine or Newtown, and Australia just said, ‘Well, that’s it. We’re not doing—we’re not seeing that again,’ and basically imposed very severe, tough gun laws, and they haven’t had a mass shooting since. I mean, our levels of gun violence are off the charts. There’s no other advanced, developed country on earth that would put up with this.”

With crime rates and gang activity that no law has been able to fix, Panama’s Public Safety Minister Rodolfo Aguilera says his country is ready to follow in the U.S.’s footsteps and make it easier—rather than harder—for citizens to carry guns on their persons for self-defense.

Aguilera indicates that Panama has tried it the other way and found no evidence to support the left’s claims that gun control is the answer. In fact, Aguilar said, “Everything seems to indicate that there is no direct correlation in the aphorism that says more guns mean more crime.”

According to the Orange County Register, Aguilera then cited “the 20-year decline in the homicide rate in the U.S. as gun laws have simultaneously been relaxed.”

The first point of note in the U.S. is the fact that every state now has some form of concealed carry, which began sweeping across the country after Florida took the lead with “shall issue” permits in 1987. This was followed, not simply by the passage of concealed carry laws throughout the country over the next three decades, but by a shift from “may issue” to “shall issue” in states like Alabama, which have gone from being states where a sheriff may issue a permit if he sees a need to one in which he shall issue a permit unless a criminal or mental record dictates otherwise. In addition to this, a push is afoot in many states to do away with the issuance of carry permits altogether, adopting a system where the Second Amendment is viewed as a viable permit in and of itself.

You see this system in states like Alaska, Arizona, Kansas, Maine, Montana, Vermont, and Wyoming. And efforts to adopt this format for concealed carry have been undertaken in earnest in New Hampshire and West Virginia.

An exponential increase in private gun ownership has occurred during this time, and it has correlated with plummeting homicide figures. Breitbart News previously reported that Congressional Research Service figures show Americans went from having 192 million privately owned firearms in 1994 to 310 million privately owned firearms in 2009. At the same time, the murder rate of 6.6 Americans per 100,000 in 1993 fell to 3.6 per 100,000 in 2000 and finally to 3.2 per 100,000 by 2011.

Panama is taking note.

British police forces have been failing the public because they aren’t applying gun licensing laws consistently, according to a report from Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary (HMIC). Yet police spin doctors convinced the media to blame the public for their failings.

HMIC’s decision to publicise its report into police firearms licensing departments by talking about “imminent gun massacres” has buried criticisms of the police in the media – and with it, potential to find a sensible consensus on new firearms licensing laws.

The top lines from the original press release that resonated the most with the press are the hysterics about “future” gun massacres and the bizarre, misleading assertions that licensed firearms owners in Britain are subject to less vetting than bus drivers, which the chief executive of the National Rifle Association (UK) described as “alarmist”.

These are clearly well-chosen lines from spin doctors who know how to catch the attention of the media and set the terms of the debate. Unfortunately, this scaremongering distracts the public from the very real police failings set out in the report, as well as HMIC’s very concerning demands that safeguards for licensed firearms owners are weakened – and their implicit assertion that police licensing departments don’t understand their own powers.

HMIC said: “It would appear that the police require the consent of the householder to enter the premises, even where they have intelligence that there may be a concern about the security of a firearm.”

This is nonsense. Police employees who want to raid a British gun owner’s home already have the power to do so under section 46 of the Firearms Act 1968. That is vitally important because it states police must get a warrant from a judge to burst into your home at the crack of dawn and take your guns away.

So why would the police lie about this? After all, it is a criminal offence not to comply with the automatically-imposed firearm and shotgun certificate condition which states guns must be stored securely. If you’re not storing your guns securely, that’s grounds for the police to get a section 46 warrant and enforce the law. Simple, no?

The wider context is that the police have been lobbying since last year for new powers to forcibly enter your home without having to justify themselves: a dangerous overreach of the state’s powers. Evidently they see accountability as something the public must demonstrate to them and not the other way round, as democratic societies work.

Worryingly, the police also want to end doctor-patient confidentiality, which is where the apples-and-oranges comparison between bus drivers and licensed firearms owners comes in.

“The Home Office should ensure that licensing does not take place without a current medical report from the applicant’s GP,” said HMIC. Their detailed plan is for no firearm or shotgun certificate to be issued without the applicant paying for a doctor’s report which will amount to the doctor saying “I certify this person is not insane”.

No sensible medic is going to take that risk, meaning such reports won’t be issued, and so the number of gun owners will fall, which is the police’s real aim here. The current system, where doctors only contact police where mental health concerns exist, is broadly fit for purpose but does need some improvement.

If you read the full report, the reason the police are furiously shouting about massacres and imagined threats becomes clear: HMIC tore into police firearms licensing departments over their failures and inefficiency. The inspectors write, incredulously, how police forces “colluded in breaking the law” by telling gun owners with expired certificates to keep hold of their guns while their renewals were processed. Essex Police is so ineffective that it cannot issue a firearm certificate in less than 5 months; Herts Police does it in about 4 weeks.

All in all, the police have played dirty by convincing ignorant British media outlets that a problem exists with registered and vetted members of the licensed firearms community, and not with the police’s documented failures.

Instead of describing us as a “threat”, or capturing regulators and using them as lobbyists on their behalf, the police need to concentrate on cleaning up their act and getting it right for the general public and the shooting community alike.

This situation with NOVA Firearms needs to stop. The owner is so friendly and willing to be flexible. All he wants to do is earn a living and these leftist tyrants won't leave him alone. I think he should hunker down for the long haul. I think no matter what he does or where he goes, unless its outside their jurisdiction, the politicians aren't gonna stop. Just get used to the idea that people are going to file false complaints, look for any reason to accuse him of breaking the law and get use to the idea of the tax system in the county is going to be used to try to shut him down, regardless of where he stays.
