New addition to the "family"

Post by gregj »

Here are a few pics of my latest addition, a Kimber Custom Classic Target.

Here's the result of the first outing with it. Approx 40 rounds of practice ball ammo, 7 yrds. Me likie, a lot.

Now for the story. I never had much of a desire for a 1911, though I've been lusting for a GSR for some time now. Anyway, my 15yo son has been bugging me for some time now for a 1911, as he developed a real thing for them over the last several months. Last time we were at the Dulles gun show, he says, "Dad, if I find a 1911 I really like, would you buy it for me, and I'll pay you back?" What else could I say, but of course.

So last week I tell this story to a co-worker that I knew was a Kimber enthusiast and had several in the past, and to my surprise, he said he had one he'd sell me for $600. I think this is a pretty good price for this model Kimber. When i brought it home and showed my son, his response was OMFG!!!! I think I hit a home run with him. :first:

My son is at a church retreat this weekend. When I told him I was going to take it to the range this weekend, his response was "I hate you". :hysterical: :hysterical:

After the first outing with it, I now see what all the fuss has been about a 1911 trigger. Like my son said, OMFG! I can feel the 1911 disease starting to take hold. Might have to get one for CC. Too many guns out there, not enough money.

Very nice! I haven;t been bitten by the 1911 bug yet since I don't own one. I do hope to have one soon enough though.

What are you doing, shooting at a target that has no bullseye? lol

... sweet 1911; great shooting for first time out with it.

*just remember SIG's are some tempermental firearms, so please do not ignore them for the new addition. BTW if you are out at Bull Run and you see a JEEP Wrangler with "got SIG" on back window, that's me - planning to be there tomorrow at/about 0900 to about 1030hrs.

Thanks guys.

Jadedon4, I'll always have a soft spot (and room in my safe) for a Sig or three (only have 3, for now).

I should have mentioned, I split up the range time with my P239, ran a couple of boxes through it. I've had the 239 for over a year, but the target from the Kimber was a lot cleaner than the one from my 239 (though neither one had a 10 ring left). I guess there's something to a 1911 trigger after all. :pistol:

I almost went to Bull Run today, but opted to play with the new kid some instead. I'll look for your Jeep next time I'm there. If you see a silver GMC crew cab p/u with a VGOF sticker in the back window, that's me.

Very nice.

Hey, I have a Kimber Custom II and bought Wilson Combat mags with the same kind of base plate you have but they wont fit. The base plate wont let them lock in place (the part where it curves up). Is that a wilson combat mag?

I bought 2 and tried them in my Kimber and Colt. Couldnt get it to lock in either weapon due to that lip that curls up. Maybe I need to look again or just replace the base plates.

Wonder if there are some bad ones floating out there. The guy in the station next to me on sat had just picked up a Colt from Green Top. It also had a WC mag, but the angle of the top round was too low for the slide to engage and move the round into battery. Slapped a different (original?) mag in and it would chamber a round just fine. I know his mag was messed up, as I put his and mine side by side, and his top round was waaaaay lower than the one in mine.

I had two and tried them both. Its that funky base plate that keeps them from sliding all the way up and locking. I didnt even bother to see if they functioned. A mag failing to lock is DOA.
