Store Alarms

Post by FrogPrince »

Has anyone had a problem setting off store "theft" alarms when carring a sidearm. Today I set off alarms at Target and Kohls...multiple times. Once I sat in a chair near one of the detectors to wait for my wife and the alarm sounded. Attracted a lot of stares but no one questioned me ... employees just smiled and said I was "ok".

That shouldn't set off an alarm. They are activated by either the bar code that gets deactivated when scanned or what I call a security tag that the clerk removes at the register.

Where I use to work we had a division which sold these units, mostly to Wal-Mart and Wal-Greens. Just about all packages of value have chips from the factory in the packages. They are activated in store and deactivated at the checkout. They are small GPS devices and have the rabidity to track anywhere. If you suspect your weapon leave it in the car and pass through the scanner. It maybe your cell phone if you have gsp feature turned on. Use trial and error testing and you'll whats tripping it.

A few years ago, I found that I would set off those alarms frequently. Eventually I figured out what it was. It turned out to be a pair of work shoes that I had bought months earlier. Apparently, one of the shoes actually had the tag inside it somewhere, and the clerk had not "deactivated" the tag when I bought the shoes.
I set the alarm off going in to Home Depot one day. I got funny looks and told the clerk that it was my shoes. She offered to run them over the deactivation pad. I took them off right there and she fixed it for me. Never happened again.
I was surprised to find that the tag was actually built into the shoes.
