Here's the dealio: I bought some Winchester 145gr 'law enforcement' 9mm. I ran some though a Sig Sauer 229 AND a Walther p99. Not only was I getting crappy shot groups, but the cases were hitting me in the face, on the head, dropping onto my arm, sitting on top of my eyepro..... Neither one of these guns has EVER done this before. They ate through Wolf 119gr 9mm with execellant results and no hot brass marks left on my face. If it was just the one pistol, I'd have thought the ejector was damaged. But it was both of them, on different days. What's up here? Anyone know? Low powered? High powered? what? Thanks for any comments.

If I had to pick one, I'd say higher power since you said wolf did fine....It may actually be a type of blow back effect, BUT, with those two quality 9's Im not sure about that either...unless you were shooting 'all gangsta-like' the way they do in the movies..

Do you know if you had proper grip? Try alternating good ammo/problem ammo in the mag and see if you notice a difference in recoil and blast, and whether there's still a problem...

Okay, thanks for the thoughts, but:
1. I NEVER fire gansta style. (though I do encourage all criminals and terrorists to fire that way, it just looks so dope)
2. I use a two handed grip, thumbs locked down on the side.
3. The problem is that the only other ammo I have is Wolf and Sharpshooters won't allow that on the range anymore.

I had thought of that, but I'd need to get ahold some other "range approved' rounds. Is it possible that this is subsonic and the brass is just barely clearing? It didn't feel any different on recoil. At first, I treated it like an exercise in taking the shoot amid distraction. It worked for a while, but on the third box.. Way different than getting screamed at with a bullhorn and having dirt flipped at you. *SIGH* Thanks for all comments

yeah it could be sub, but I thought you said 145..winchester makes a 147 subsonic... I don't know... why wont they let you shoot wolf again?... I was just kidding about the gansta thang..yo....

Sounds like not enough powder to clear the ejection port....are these reloads or factory new ammo?

Okay, I just looked at the box: you are right, it's 147gr 'Ranger'. You are very smart, I am very dumb. Yes, I got the joke on the gangsta grip, but I wanted to make sure that everyone knew I wasn't holding the gun weak. Now that Gilbert's is sharpshooters, they informed me that NO steel core ammo is allowed on the range. The reason they gave was that steel core will strike the floor, causing a spark, which might set the backstop on fire. No, I don't know how that would happen. I just took it to mean that what they want to do is NOT separate the steel casings from the brass ones for when they sell them back. 150 rounds to go. A helmet with a wind screen? Catcher's mask? Pull the trigger, duck, pull the trigger, duck?

I rarely get hit in the face - I usually catch the brass in my shirt. Equally unpleasant. I seem to have cured this by wearing turtlenecks to the range.

The only suggestion I've got is to wear some sort of hat. Hopefully, the brim will keep some of the brass off your face.

There is a chainsaw helmet that has a face screen...probably cost more than replacement ammo.

Or, you could sell that stuff in the classified section if you hadn't already posted your problems with it.

Don't know where you live, but if you are close enough or you want to take a ride to my place I can figure out what is the problem. Hell you can even shoot on my range without being yelled at with a bullhorn.

It has nothing to with smart or not so smart...really, this kind of stuff "happens" thats why they have a bumper sticker that say "it happens"... I 'm guessing its the force of the load since you said the 115 worked fine, . Im thinking if it was anything mechanical it wouldn't matter what load you shot?

I hear you GS78, I was just exasperated that I got that wrong. I am going to ASS-sume that it is the force of the load, but is it too much or too little? Would this happen with 124gr for example. Back in THE OLD DAYS before gilbert's got all snotty with steel core (yeah, I went to the NRA range, they don't like it either, plus the test REALLY annoyed me. To get WAY off topic here, WHY do gun shops and ranges tend to employ people that behave like their doing you a favor by letting you in the store. Not all the employees of course, but most gun shops/ranges have at least one, usually more.) I was pretty happy pumping wolf 9mm and now I gotta THINK about what to buy. I suppose I should stick with 119gr. Both of the guns that I mostly use are German, perhaps they are rated for 119gr only? Anyway, Thanks everyone for all posts. If Anyone has a crazy theory or fact, let me hear it. I'll go back to the range, this time with the Ruger p85, and see how she likes it. Let y'all know, anyway.

If its 145 gr its probably subsonic and hence a light load. Could be why they're just barely clearing the port. No data found on the Winchester site.
