My Silencer is Broken. :-(

Post by MarcSpaz »

After only a few months, my AAC 762SDN6 ratchet latch broke.

I took the can off the riffle so I can clean it. When I was done, I spun it back on. Once it hit the end of the threads, I normally back it off until it latches. This time it spun right off with a horrible sound like stripped gear over-run.

The sprin is fine. It is the tab itself. It looks like its been filed down. I know its not the barrel adapter, because it acts the same on my other 2 rifles too.

I've probably spun this can on and off and adaptor maybe 40 to 50 times. That does not seem like a lot to me.

Anyone have this problem? Does it sound like normal ware or am I just spinning this thing too much?

I'm a little confused.

You said, "Once it hit the end of the threads, I normally back it off until it latches.". Did you mean to say that once you start to hit the threads you screw it on until it latches?

Once you hit the end of the threads it should be fully latched? I don't know how you can back it off to latch?

When I tighten it, when it hits the end of the threads, the latch is riding on top of a ratchet tooth on the break. When you look at it, the catch/release button is stuck in the release position. I back it off just a millimeter or two so the latch catches, by dropping between two teeth. If you don't, it keeps the spring for the catch/release excessively tensioned, and the release button looks like its pressed. That can lead to the can rattling loose during fire, which allows gas to blow out the back of the can where it mounts.

That is not normal. I have one on the way but my friend's SDN6 has been taken on and off 3 different rifles without issue. I would call AAC, they will make it right.

I sent them an email to see if they could give me some guidance on how to move forward. If I don't hear from them on Monday, I'll call Tuesday.

I'll bring it by VA Arms and see if its something Rob can fix too. I know they are an authorized dealer. Not sure about warranty work, but it can't hurt to ask.

I'll tell you this, if there are no local repair shops, I'm driving to AL to get it fixed while I wait.

If you drive to Alabama, I highly recommend avoiding Birmingham. I was just there, the other day. It may be worse than Atlanta or Memphis. At least Memphis has Graceland.

So, Virginia Arms is not able to repair it. AAC replied to my email. They said that there are no authorized repair facilities outside of AAC.

They will repair it (replace the latch). They will also fully coordinate the shipping.

When I get home, I'm going to send them the info they need to get the shipping stuff setup. Once I have an ETA of the repair, I'll let you guys know. They are very responsive to email, which is awesome.

Maybe hold the button down while turning so the catch isn't riding against the ridges wearing it down?

I talked to the guys at AAC via email. They are awesome to deal with.

Nick from their tech support made the same recommendation. He said that they should last for at least 400-500 mounts and dismounts even letting it glide on the ratchet. They are going to repair it for free. Even paying the shipping each way.

Hopefully, in a few weeks I'll be squared away. If it was going to be months, I would have drove down for an appointment. But weeks I can deal with.

Man, the guys at AAC are awesome. The shipping company refused to deliver the item to me. The made some calls and got things squared up. When I finally showed up, not only was the latch repaired, the completely cleaned the can, all the scratches were gone and the refinished the outside coating.

Plus, I bet I called and emailed them with a bunch of questions about the repair and they were always very professionals. I got to deal with the same two guys so there was never an issue of misinformation or having to repeat conversions.
