where to target practice outside

Post by chainsaul »

Wanting to take the wife out to learn how to shoot. She does not want to go to an indoor range nor a range out doors where there will be others around. We live in the roanoke county area. We would really like a wooded area where we could set up some close range targets etc. Is this allowed anywhere in the Roanoke or Blacksburg area? Thanks, Semper fi

We are in New Castle within the Jefferson National Forest. There is Pott's Slope about 4 miles down the road. It is a cleared area, cover over the shooting benches and can go up to 100 yards. Free and always open. Not uncommon to have the range to yourself.

It would be about 1Hr 10Min drive for you. We used to live in Carriage Hills off 221. I don't recall ever hearing of a place in SW county to shoot guns - legally.

This might help too.

The first time I took my wife to an Indoor Range , her only comment was " I would rather shoot out doors ". We were lucky we had always had some land to shoot on. Myself and 3 friends had a Farmer near Emporia that let us Hunt or just shoot in return we helped on the farm...fixing fences, gates and repaired sheds and barns . We would take a couple loads of firewood to him each year. As he got older he really was grateful for anything that made life easier. When he gave up the farming operation and his family started running things we lost our land use privilege . Since then my wife and I bought 30 acres in Dinwiddie . Our Cabin is now complete but , the 1st. thing we did was build a 15yd. pistol range and a 100yd. rifle range. Now she really enjoys shooting and spends a lot of time there. I know now it is hard to find a private place to shoot. Good Luck on your search ! :pistol:
