Obama is preparing another set of gun-control Executive Orders that will be used to bypass Congress. These actions will affect things from “high-powered handguns” to possession of firearms by those with either mental health issues or misdemeanor domestic violence convictions.
I am trying to get details on all those gun-related items, but such details are infuriatingly scarce right now. When I do have the details, I will let everyone know.

3. A big “thank you” to all those businesses and individuals who made the 2015 RRRC/VCDL shooting match a success!

On May 9th the Roanoke Rifle and Revolver Club (RRRC) again hosted the VCDL/RRRC Defensive Pistol Shoot (IDPA). This was a big undertaking, much more than the average person might think, but it ran like a well-oiled machine thanks to Board member Al Steed Jr. and all the wonderful people and businesses listed below. (There are some photos of the event on the VCDL web site: http://vcdl.org. The videos are not working yet, as we need to get some additional software.)
Here’s the report:
It was a beautiful day for a shooting match! This year’s match set a new record with 95 shooters, dwarfing previous years! For those keeping track, 95 shooter fired about 9,500 rounds of ammunition — with NO SAFETY problems, no one injured, and only a few targets escaping unfazed in the process!
We wish to thank the 23 folks from RRRC who made this possible, along with the Roanoke Rifle and Revolver Club for their support:

4. VCDL has a new Richmond gun show coordinator!

Mike Wilburt, a retiree with quite a resume as a Second Amendment fighter, has stepped up to be the Richmond Gun Show Coordinator. Mike is replacing Tom Ariel, who no longer has the time necessary to be the coordinator.
On behalf of VCDL, I want to thank Tom for his service to VCDL as the Richmond Gun Show Coordinator! Tom's efforts are much appreciated and were key to getting the VCDL message out to Central Virginia gun owners!

5. Bill to protect the restored gun rights of felons from other states signed into law
**************************************************
Delegate Michael Webert and gun owners had another victory recently when Governor McAuliffe signed HB 2286, which honors firearms rights restoration for gun owners from other states. The new law will become effective on July 1. Currently if a person gets their rights restored in another state, Virginia does not automatically honor those restored gun rights.
Delegate Webert has had a 100% pro-gun voting record, consistently ranking in the top 3 or 4 legislators in the House in 2013, 2014, and 2015.

New law will restore gun rights for some Virginia felons

A new state law going into effect July 1 will restore the gun rights of some convicted felons, though not without controversy.
Sponsored by Del. Michael Webert, R-Marshall, House Bill 2286 allows any person who had their rights fully restored in another state to possess firearms in Virginia. Democratic Governor Terry McAuliffe signed the bill earlier this month with no changes, amending the current law that prohibits convicted felons in Virginia from owning guns.
Webert, in supporting the restoration of gun rights, said Virginia has long sanctioned the reinstatement of voting rights for felons from other states. He quoted the first U.S. president in making his point.
"This measure is a positive step to help persons who have repaid their debt to society," Webert said. "George Washington once said, 'To err is natural, but to rectify error is glory.' I believe this legislation lives up to that principle."
Culpeper Town Councilman Jon Russell, chairman of the public safety committee, congratulated Webert and McAuliffe on passing "such an important piece of legislation."
Russell said, "Just like restored voting rights, felons who have worked hard to be on the right side of the law should have their 2nd Amendment rights returned. It's refreshing to see there is still some common sense bi-partisanship in the commonwealth."
Michael McClary, with the Culpeper County Democratic Committee, called the legislation "silly," saying it was "an easy lift" for Webert. He said going up against current day "NRA hysteria" about gun rights is political suicide for any Virginia politician, regardless of party affiliation.
"The argument that if we are going to give felons their voting rights then we should give them their guns is pretty undeniable. Hence, the governor's signature," McClary said. "What is a shame in the commonwealth and in the country is that very few politicians are willing to work to try to bring down all the widespread killing, maiming and suicides being perpetrated by our well-armed and mostly unregulated citizens, and of course, the criminals."
Andy Goddard, legislative director with The Virginia Center for Public Safety, an anti-gun violence organization based in Norfolk, said they opposed the legislation during the general assembly session because the wording was and still is confusing.
"It should say Virginia would recognize a person's right to have firearms in another state provided the restoration was done with no conditions. It's not a terrible, blood's going to flow in the streets sort of thing, obviously, but it's just adding confusion to something that already needed to be straightened out ," he said. "The bottom line to this whole thing is it's all kind of moot because it's the federal government that makes it illegal for a felon to have a firearm, not the state."
Goddard disagreed with violent felons ever getting their gun rights restored, but felt it was OK in the case of nonviolent felons, saying existing Virginia law does not specify between the two.
Del. Ed Scott, R-Madison, voted in support of Webert's bill, slated to become law this summer.
"There are a number of areas where it makes sense to recognize rights restored by other states," he said. "When someone has paid their debt to society and earned the right to once more possess a firearm, moving across a state line should not cause an extra burden."
Del. Patrick Hope, D-Arlington, voted against the legislation because he felt its priorities were misplaced. In Virginia, a convicted felon can apply to the governor to get his voting rights back, it's not automatic, but the new law automatically reinstates gun privileges if restored by another state, he said.
"Why are we treating the right to carry a gun as superior to the right to vote?" he said, characterizing the law as inauthentic. "That's why I opposed the bill."

Bloomberg is pushing for people to wear orange tomorrow, June 2nd, for “Gun Violence Awareness Day.” Oh, I think the unarmed citizens in Baltimore, New York, and Chicago are well aware of the criminal misuse of firearms.
But I like Bloomberg's choice of colors. I suggest wearing your orange Gun Save Lives items tomorrow to remind everyone that good people with guns are what keeps bad people with guns in check.

On June 2 HBO, MTV, and a host of celebrities will be joining Michael Bloomberg and other pro-gun control groups to watch participating mayors proclaim “Gun Violence Awareness Day” in their cities.
Those participating will “wear orange” and MTV will “change its on-air logo — as well as several of its social media avatars — to orange in recognition of National Gun Violence Awareness Day.”

On December 29, 2014, Breitbart News reported that Julianne Moore became the celebrity face for Everytown for Gun Safety’s year-end donations drive. CTNews reported that Moore wrote a letter asking possible contributors to cough up “$5 or more” to “stop gun violence” and “save lives.”
On April 30, 2015, Breitbart News reported that Melissa Joan Hart signed on for Moms Demand Action’s Mother’s Day week gun control push. The push was largely out-shadowed by the number of Americans flocking to gun stores to get guns and bullets for self-defense following the Islamic attack in Garland at the start of Mother’s Day week.
In addition to the celebrities, Motown Records and Essence Magazine will be joining HBO and MTV in support of “Gun Violence Awareness Day.”
Participating Senators include Chuck Schumer (D-NY), Dick Durbin (D-IL), Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), and Sen. Al Franken (D-MN, [PVC: Franken - ever the comedian])

In August 2013 Breitbart News reported that Murphy broke with Thomas Jefferson on the source of unalienable rights–which includes guns rights–by saying the right to keep and bear arms is “not a God-given right.” You’ll recall that Jefferson famously explained that we “are endowed by [our] Creator with certain unalienable Rights“

7. Antis remind Americans of the danger of stepping on the Gadsden rattlesnake, but fail to understand what they just did

The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence has a flag on their Facebook page that shows a bare foot labeled “Humanity, Civility, Democracy, Reason” stepping on a rattlesnake. This is supposed to be making fun of the Gadsden Flag that shows a rattlesnake coiled and ready to strike, labeled “Don’t tread on me!”
After I wiped the tears of laughter from my eyes after seeing the antis use the words “civility” and “reason,” the absurdity of showing someone barefoot stepping on a rattlesnake grabbed my attention. The Gadsden Flag was created the warn the tyrannical British Government not to tread on the American colonies.
So, believe it or not, the antis are being honest for once by representing themselves as the foot of tyranny stepping on gun owners, who are represented as the rattlesnake of liberty and freedom.
You would think the antis would know better, but the result will be a bare foot severely bitten by a rattlesnake that simply wanted to be left alone.

8. Texas passes licensed open carry. Yet another Demanding Moms failure

In spite of the Demanding Mom’s crocodile tears and Bloomberg’s money, Texas has finally passed licensed open carry (unlike Virginia which has Constitutional Open Carry)! In a state where it is not unusual to have 100 degree weather, gun owners will be able to finally carry their guns in a more comfortable manner. The law becomes effective on January 1, 2016. It has not been signed by the Governor yet, but he has said he will sign it.

Prayer interrupted by dueling protests

PHOENIX (AP) — About 500 protesters gathered outside a Phoenix mosque on Friday as police kept two groups sparring about Islam far apart from each other.
The rally initially was organized by a Phoenix man who says he is a former Marine who fought in the Iraq War and believes Islam is a violent religion. He led about 250 people who carried pistols, assault rifles, American flags and drawings of Muhammad to the Islamic Community Center of Phoenix.
That group was met by an equally sized group of protesters, some holding signs promoting love and peace, who came to show their support for the mosque and Muslim community.
As the two sides argued and yelled, dozens of police officers formed a line between them and kept them separated. There were no reports of injuries or arrests at the protest, which lasted a couple of hours and gained attention around the country on social media. Phoenix police estimated about 500 protesters showed up, roughly 250 on each side.
The protest came about month after a shootout outside a Muhammad cartoon-drawing contest in a Dallas suburb. Two Phoenix men showed up at the event with assault rifles and were killed by police. The men formerly worshipped at the Phoenix mosque where Friday’s protest took place.
Drawings of Muhammad are deemed insulting to many followers of Islam and have sparked violence around the world.

Women Are a Driving Force in Nation’s Shift from Gun Control to Gun Rights

Women have emerged as one of the fastest-growing demographics of new gun buyers and concealed carry permit holders in the country, and in the process, they have become a driving force in the shift in American attitudes from pro-gun control to pro-gun rights.
In January, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported that “women [are] buying more guns than ever.” And the result of this surge in women gun buyers has been an expansion of firearms and firearms accessories made to cater to the female market.
Many of the accessories are often designed and marketed by fellow women gun owners.
This growing participation of women in firearm purchases and firearm-related activities has not happened overnight. Rather, it has been steadily increasing over a number of years. For example, the National Shooting Sports Foundation found that 2011 and 2012 showed the surge beginning with a “79 percent … increase in female” customers buying firearms and/or firearm accessories. The trend has continued from that point.
Now, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reports that this is not only providing new markets for the gun industry and expanding the number of concealed carry permits issued to women, but also impacting Americans’ views on guns and gun rights.
In late 2012–immediately following the heinous attack on Sandy Hook Elementary School–there was greater support for gun control than for gun rights. In fact, there had been a greater support for gun control over gun rights for more than 20 years. And this held true through January 2013. Then things began to shift.
On parallel with growing female gun ownership, increasing numbers of women applying for concealed carry permits, and burgeoning women involvement in shooting sports, support for gun control has dwindled. Thus, whereas only “45 percent” of the American people supported gun rights in January 2013 while “51 percent” supported gun control, the numbers have now shifted to “52 percent” support for gun rights and only “46 percent” support for gun control.
Interestingly, the shift in women’s attitude in favor of guns has taken place during years when groups like Bloomberg-funded Moms Demand Action have worked their hardest to get moms to vote against the Second Amendment.

Democrat Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton thinks that “gun free zone” signs work, twice claims that modern sporting rifles are “automatic weapons,” and states that owners of the most popular rifle sold in the United States today are a small group “that terrorizes the majority of people.”
The June 17, 2014 interview shows just how out of touch Clinton is with a nation where the majority of people in this country who favor gun rights. Clinton went on to bizarrely claim that those who do not bow to her views on gun control are “prone to violence.”
Gun owners in general, and concealed carry permit holders in specific, are far more law abiding than the average citizen.
Clinton is presently the one of two formally declared Democrats running for the Presidency in 2016. Vermont socialist Bernie Sanders threw his hat into the ring this morning.

10 things anti-gunners taught me about myself

I have listened to and read a lot of rhetoric from those that are terrified of the sight of a gun. I have even learned a lot about myself that I didn’t know. I have decided that I should compile a list of the top ten things I have learned about myself that I didn’t know. Here are my ten favorite things that the anti-gunners taught me about myself.
10. Deep down, I know gun laws prevent gun violence
If I search my soul, I’ll somehow magically admit that criminals will just stop trying to acquire guns once enough laws are in place. Much like the shootings that happen in gun free zones, like schools. If we only ban guns harder, criminals won’t get the guns. I also should realize that in the magical world of glitter and unicorns that is the United States, that criminals will most definitely go through a universal background check to get a gun. How could I be so callous to assume a criminal might steal a gun because they don’t want to undergo a background check?
9. I’m a tea-tard republican
I had no idea. I’m actually not a republican but I guess I need to buy my elephant shirt. I haven’t been a republican for a long time and I honestly am not sure what a “tea tard” is, but I’m sure it’s in reference to a tea party supporter. I’m a libertarian (and no, that isn’t a “weed smoking republican”, but nice try). I want less government than republicans and taxes infuriate me. I also think that homosexuals should have the right to marry. I know, I’m way out there, right?
8. I need to move to Somalia where there are no gun laws
Somalian gun rights aren’t guaranteed. All weapons must be licensed and registered and no automatic weapons are allowed. That’s interesting. Sounds more like an anti-gunner that doesn’t want to take my guns might enjoy the peace and tranquility of Somalia. (And Somalia is the result of a failed socialist/communist regime.)
7. I am much more likely to shoot myself than I am to defend myself
I have shot thousands of rounds out of dozens of different weapons and not once have I ever come close to shooting myself or another human. I know how to handle a firearm and I know the safety rules involved. Anti-gunners tend to think that guns are not used ever in self defense situations. Illinois’s new concealed carry law is already saving lives.
6. I have homicidal rage filled thoughts about…everything
Not only is this blatantly false, it’s laughable. Some people, like me, own guns for hobbies. I enjoy shooting–I find it to be stress relieving. I do not wish death on anyone nor do I fantasize about ever having to use my weapon on a person. I hope it never comes to that, but guns are a great defensive tool and can be used to level the playing field if another person is violent toward me.
5. I hate the government and have an irrational fear of them shooting me
Ok. Fair enough. That is pretty accurate actually. I dislike almost every single aspect of the government. They steal money in the form of taxes and constantly write laws to restrict our freedom. The only reason I fear being shot by the government is because democide is the number one killer of all humans in the history of planet earth (other than natural causes of course). Adolf Hitler was a government official that banned guns them committed democide. I really don’t want to go down that fascist path again.
4. I hate women
Apparently owning a gun means I hate women. I probably pay women less too. I had no idea that I hated women and elect women hating officials. I actually prefer women to be armed in order to level the playing field in the event of an attack. Plus I am, in fact, a woman. I do not hate my gender. Please don’t confuse this as a hatred for men either because I am an egalitarian, not a feminist. But women are by nature most often, the weaker gender so it would make sense for them to be armed.
3. I am “phallically challenged”
Because I own a gun, I have a small penis. This one surprises me since, as I just mentioned, I’m a woman. I was not aware that I even had a penis. But if an anti-gunner says it, it must be true. I should try to find this small male genitalia I didn’t know I possessed.
2. I am an old white man and scared of my shadow
I’m actually not scared of anything (except democide) because I carry a gun at all times. I am white, but I’m not old, nor am I a man. But see #3 for reference. It’s interesting that an anti-gunner is allowed to profile a gun owner based on nothing else, but a gun owner is automatically a terrorist.

This actually offends me the most, but luckily I am aware that exercising my Second Amendment rights doesn’t mean I can get so offended I shoot someone. It means I can protect myself from those that get so offended that they start shooting. I’m not sure how the simple act of owning a gun means I hate everyone not like me, but somehow it does if you ask the anti-gunners.
And that completes my list of the 10 things anti-gunners have taught me about myself. I’m still amazed at a few of them. I shouldn’t be, you would think old arguments would get boring to regurgitate, but hey, if it’s not working, you are probably an anti-gunner.

You would think that anyone with a modicum of common sense would know that handgun waiting periods have little to no impact on criminal activity.
Professional criminals do not get their firearms through legal avenues, but through theft, the black market, straw purchases, and the Department of Justice.
Opportunistic and “crime of passion” criminals running on emotion either typically A). already have firearms, or B). use other objects as weapons when a firearm isn’t available, typically to the same deadly end, and typically though much more prolonged and brutal attacks with impact or stabbing weapons.
Politifact felt compelled to challenge a Wisconsin State Senator who mentioned this self-evident fact.
Amid a surge in murderous gun violence in Milwaukee, the Republican-controlled Wisconsin Senate voted to repeal a state law that requires a two-day wait for handgun purchases.
Just before the April 21, 2015, vote, the author of the bill, state Sen. Van Wanggaard, made this waiting-period claim:
“There’s no statistical evidence that it reduces violence whatsoever,” the Racine Republican declared.
With the repeal bill moving to the GOP-controlled Assembly, and likely headed for GOP Gov. Scott Walker, let’s see if Wanggaard is right.
It must have nearly killed Politifact to concede that Wanggaard’s statement is “mostly true.”
Wanggaard said, “There’s no statistical evidence that” a waiting period for handgun purchases “reduces violence whatsoever.”
There is research to indicate that handgun waiting periods are linked with lower suicide rates. But we did not find evidence that waiting periods coincide with less violence being committed by one person against another. If such evidence emerges, we may revisit this item.
As it stands, Wanggaard’s statement is accurate but needs clarification — our definition of Mostly True.
But even that admission is selling Wanggaard short. The ruling should have been “Entirely True,” and here’s why.
Politifact—always reliably left-leaning in their biases—cited only well-known gun control sources throughout their “fact check,” and didn’t bother to challenge their “experts” nearly as much as they did this state senator.
If they were that honest, they’d have to concede that there is no evidence whatsoever that a 48 hour handgun waiting period even prevents suicide.
Sadly, depression is a real and seriously debilitating mental illness for many people, and one that we have not been able to fully understand the root causes of, much less successfully treat. People suffering from long-term and cyclical depression and other mental health maladies are simply not struck by a one-off desire to harm themselves that never again occurs.
Sadly, I’ve witnessed this firsthand with numerous people. I’ve seen the results of both successful and unsuccessful attempts more times than I care to think about, and the one common denominator is that those people who seriously want to end their lives will eventually find a way to do so.
The best these anti-gun “experts” can legitimately claim is that a 48-hour waiting period may keep someone from using that specific implement to end their lives during that very brief time period. The reality of the matter, however, is that there are many options for suicide other than firearms, as the incredibly suicidal and gun-free Japanese people can attest.
Both sides of the debate would like to find a way to get people in deep mental distress the help they need to find their way out of the pain and hurt that they are experiencing. Unfortunately, waiting periods have no impact on the seriously intent on taking their own lives
These waiting period unfortunately do serve as an impediment to protecting the lives of those law-abiding citizens who may suddenly find themselves needing a firearm to protect themselves and their family.
It’s time to end waiting period in the 10 states that still have this archaic requirement on the books.

U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer demanded a federal crackdown on stolen and illegally-trafficked firearms making their way into New York City from other states, especially in the South, with lax gun laws via the “iron pipeline.” Schumer said southern states like Georgia—which is where the gun used to kill NYPD hero Brian Moore came from— transport illegal firearms across the country.
First—Supporting more federal resources and modernization of the ATF’s National Tracing Center used by NYPD and other local departments fighting the scourge of crime guns in their communities. The center helps police agencies trace crime guns from their original source and could help law enforcement connect the dots to a gun-running hot spots and criminal enterprises.
Second – Eliminating the damaging Tiahrt amendment, which restricts the ATF from sharing trace data with law enforcement and the public, and implementing a more sophisticated system. Schumer has rallied against this amendment before, but says now events like Officer Moore’s murder and even clearer evidence of the flow of crime guns to places like New York City will help him and colleagues to renew that call. The Tiahrt rider also shields trace data so that it is not considered admissible evidence in court. Schumer says this not only hurts the ATF but keeps criminal enterprises and gun runners on the streets.
Third—Schumer said the ATF needs a permanent director who can lead these efforts. The ATF is once again without a formal director, which hurts the ATF’s ability to use Congress to support its broader missions, like stopping the flow of crime guns to New York City. Schumer will work to push through the nomination of a new ATF Director, giving the agency the leadership and direction it desperately needs.
According to the NYPD, 85 percent of New York City guns used in crimes come from out of state and 90 percent of New York City crime guns are totally illegal. Schumer explained how illegal guns often travel via a criminal pipeline, from states with lax gun laws, especially in the south, to states with safer gun laws. Specifically, the tragic murder of NYPD Officer Brian Moore last week was carried out by a trafficked gun that was stolen from a store in Georgia and brought to New York City.
Schumer also pointed out that the semiautomatic pistol used against Officers Liu and Ramos was bought legally 18 years ago from a sprawling bonanza of low-cost weaponry in Jonesboro, Georgia. Schumer said, given this information, it is no coincidence that nine of the twenty-three guns stolen from a Georgia shop in 2011 have been recovered in New York City. Schumer said this is a major pathway the feds should follow to identify, arrest and prosecute the original supplier of these Georgia guns into the city.

REMEMBER, RESPONDING POLICE DON’T KNOW WHO YOU ARE! Assume they do at your own risk. For a good outcome, it’s better to not have a gun in your hand when the police show up. South Carolina police officer responding to home invasion shoots homeowner

A South Carolina sheriff’s deputy responding to a report of a home invasion shot the homeowner in the neck Thursday because he refused to drop his gun, authorities said.
Two deputies from the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office encountered the man at the rear of his mobile home in Hollywood after two other men fled on bicycles, Sheriff’s Maj. Eric Watson said in a news release.
The man was either leaving or standing at the back door of the house and was armed, Watson said. One of the two deputies shot him after he refused to give up the weapon.
After he was shot and had been placed in the ambulance, the man told police that he had exchanged gunfire with the two men who fled on bicycles. By Thursday afternoon, police had arrested one of them, identified as Thomas Zachary Brown, 22. Brown was charged with first-degree burglary and attempted murder in connection with the home invasion. Watson said Brown had not been injured.
Online court records did not indicate whether Brown had an attorney, and an operator at the sheriff's office said that information was not available.
The homeowner was taken to the hospital and was undergoing surgery, Watson said. His condition was not known immediately.
Watson said the names of the deputy and the shooting victim would be released Friday, as would copies of a dashboard camera video. He said the deputies were not equipped with body cameras.
The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating the shooting and the sheriff’s office will investigate the home invasion, Watson said.
Police released two 911 tapes of the encounter Thursday. On one, an exasperated male caller tells police, "Someone was trying to break into my house. Please come. ... It's an emergency and they have guns. Please come!"
The caller, becoming increasingly agitated with every question from the operator, says the suspects are banging on his windows and that he is hiding in a laundry room. When asked, the caller tells the operator to send deputies to both the front and the back door of the home.
About nine minutes into the call, the man shouts something unintelligible away from the phone as the 911 operator tries to get him back on the call.
In a second 911 call, a woman asks sheriff's deputies to come to an address that appears to be near the house where the home invasion took place. The caller says she saw two people on bicycles riding through her property and that something happened behind her house.
On police radio calls released Thursday, there is confusion about the identity of the man who was shot.
"It's unknown if he's part of the shooters or the victim," an officer can be heard saying after an ambulance is called to treat a man with a gunshot wound to the neck.
Later, an officer asks a dispatcher to summon the State Law Enforcement Division, which investigates officer-involved shootings.
Hollywood is a small rural community of mobile homes and brick ranch homes about 15 miles west of Charleston. The man's home is located down a dirt driveway behind two other homes.
Thursday's shooting was the second in the past month involving law enforcement in Charleston County. On April 4, a white North Charleston Police officer shot and killed a black man who he said fought with him over the officer's stun gun.
Officer Michael Slager claimed that he killed Walter Scott in self-defense. But a bystander's video showed him firing eight shots at Scott's back as he ran away. Slager has been charged with murder.

OREM, Utah (AP) — A shopper with a concealed weapons permit shot and killed a man who was trying to carjack a woman Saturday outside a Utah grocery store, officers said.
The 31-year-old male shooter was in Macey’s parking lot in Orem, 45 miles south of Salt Lake City, when he heard a woman’s screams as she was being pulled from her SUV by the suspect, investigators said.
The man told police he went to assist the woman, and the 27-year-old male suspect lunged at him in an attempt to grab his gun.
The man fired one round at the suspect, hitting him in the chest. The suspect later died at a hospital.
No other injuries were reported.
Police Capt. Ned Jackson said it appears the suspect was unarmed at the time, but several felony warrants had been issued for his arrest.
Jackson didn’t think the shooter would face charges but said the investigation is ongoing.
“He’s trying to assist this lady whose car is being stolen,” Jackson told KSL-TV. “He was fighting with her. He was trying to protect her. Then at the point the suspect comes to him, and he’s trying to take the gun from him, then he’s trying to protect himself.”
The names of the shooter and suspect were not immediately released.
The shooter had stopped at the store to buy food before going out for target shooting.
The suspect allegedly assaulted a woman earlier Saturday and drove to the Macey’s parking lot in a stolen pickup. Once there, he exited the truck and tried to carjack the woman at about 11:20 a.m., police said.
“That may be a reason he escalated a fight to the degree that it’s gone on today, and stealing cars to try to get away, because he has some felony warrants,” Jackson told KSL.

Texas college professors may soon face a dilemma between upholding professional ethics and protecting their lives.
The Texas Legislature appears poised to approve a bill that would allow college students to carry firearms to class. Once the law, called “campus carry,” is passed, public universities in Texas will not be allowed to ban gunson their campuses, although private schools could enact their own prohibitions.
Its backers argue that students have the right to protect themselves on campuses with handguns. The lobbying extends to sponsoring crash courses such as the NRA University, a two-hour seminar course for college students.
With this proposed law, a question coming up for many academics is whether they would be forced to give A grades to undeserving students, just so they can avoid being shot.
This is not as far-fetched as it sounds. In my five years as a college professor, I have had experiences with a number of emotionally distressed students who resort to intimidation when they receive a lesser grade than what they feel they deserve.
Threats on Campus
Here is an example of one such threatening experience. One evening in a graduate course, after I handed back students’ papers, a young woman stood up and pointed at me. “This is unacceptable!” she screamed as her body shook in rage.
She moved toward the front of the class, waving her paper in my face, and screamed again, “Unacceptable!” After a heated exchange, she left the room and stood outside the door sobbing.
All this was over receiving a B on a completely low-stakes assignment.
What followed was even more startling. The following week, the student brought along a muscle-bound man to class. He watched me through the doorway window for the entire three hours of the class, with his arms folded across his chest.
And if this wasn’t enough, the young woman’s classmates avoided me on campus because, they said, they were afraid of getting caught in the crossfire should she decide to shoot me.
After that, every time she turned in a paper I cringed and prayed that it was good so that I wouldn’t have to give her anything less than an A.
Learning from this experience, I now give papers back only at the end of the class or just “forget” to bring them with me. I was lucky that the student didn’t have a gun in my classroom. Other professors have not been so lucky.
Last year, a student at Purdue shot his instructor in front of a classroom of students. In another incident, in 2009, a student at Northern Virginia Community College tried to shoot his math professor on campus. And in 2000 a graduate student at the University of Arkansas shot his English professor.
In each of these states, carrying handguns on campus was illegal at the time of the shooting, although a bill was introduced in Arkansas earlier this year to allow students to carry guns.
Grade Inflation
Despite these and other shootings, a new trend has emerged across the U.S. that supports guns on college campuses. Eight states allow firearms on college campuses, and 11 states are now considering similar legislation.
We know that some students will carry guns whether it is legal or not. One study found that close to 5 percent of undergraduates had a gun on campus and that almost 2 percent had been threatened with a firearm while at school.
Allowing students to carry weapons to class strips off a layer of safety. Students are often emotional and can be volatile when it comes to their GPAs. Who would want to give a student a low grade and then get shot for it?
Many schools are highly competitive and require certain GPAs for admission. Students on scholarships and other forms of financial aid must maintain high grades to keep their funding. It’s no surprise that some students resort to any means necessary to keep up their GPAs.
An international student once cried in my office and begged me to change his F to an A, as without it his country would no longer pay for him to be in the U.S. I didn’t. He harassed me by posting threatening messages on Facebook.
So the question is, Will we soon see a new sort of grade inflation, with students earning a 4.0 GPA with their firepower rather than brainpower? And if so, what sort of future citizenry will we be building on our campuses?

On April 23, an alleged 18-year-old home invader “chose the wrong house” for a daylight robbery in Arlington, Texas, and was shot and killed by the homeowner, who was in the residence at the time.
The incident occurred around 4 pm.
The body of the deceased suspect–Nathyn Tealer–was discovered in the backyard when police arrived. They arrested a second, uninjured suspect shortly afterward the incident took place.
According to 5 NBC DFW, the homeowner heard a loud noise coming from the back of his house and saw two suspects allegedly trying to break in. Arlington Police Sgt. Paul Rodriquez said the homeowner “confronted them and during the course of that confrontation he shot at them,” killing Tealer.
The homeowner was not injured during the alleged home
A next door neighbor commented on incident: “People work hard for [their] stuff, you can’t just break into somebody’s house. [If you do,] it’s the chance you take.”
