I just got word from EM Bob Sadtler that a bill introduced by Delegate Mark Cole, and that VCDL backed, has been effectively brought back to life in a Governor's recommended change to another bill!

The key wording from Cole's HB 1287, which keeps items from being forfeited to the government until after a person has actually been found guilty of the crime and all appeals have been exhausted, has been dropped into Senator Marsden's bill, SB 721, by the Governor. (SB 721 deals with seizures, too. It ensures that seized items are inventoried and the inventory given to the person whose items were seized.)

Cole's HB 1287 originally passed the House by a huge margin, passed out of the Senate Courts of Justice committee, only to die in the Senate Finance committee.

VCDL backed Cole's bill because of the disproportionately-high number of seizures involving firearms.

We need to contact our legislators to encourage them to ACCEPT the Governor's recommended changes to SB 721.
