Defensive Shooting Class Anyone?

Post by MarcSpaz »

Well, I am going to see about getting onto a Defensive Shooting class in the next two months. I want to get some drills I can practice on my own. I have two ranges near mere that I can secure private range time for practicing just about anything, so I just needed to do it.

Something that is making me want to do this is... talking to Jim (ProShooter), in another thread in the not too distant past, about weak hand unsupported shooting. So, today at the range I was trying to figure out what the best technique would be to practice, and I very rapidly realized that I do not know any proper off-hand techniques.

I fired 35 rounds into this target, weak hand, unsupported. The paper is 15"x18" and the target area is 14"x14". At 7 yards, 3 rounds barely hit the target and my main group was 5"x8". Not too great.

It was kind of comical. At one point my son said the recoil was kicking my arm up to the point where I was aiming at the ceiling. I was shocked at how difficult it is to do.

So, anyone interested in meeting Jim and getting some good training in? I figured it would be good to get a few folks together, especially since I know we have a few new CHP holders. Believe me... I have been shooting for 30 years and I don't know what I need to for improved chances of success in self defense shooting.

I wouldn't call it a club meet and greet since its serious in nature, but it would be pretty awesome to get some VGOF members together for a day... and maybe takeover a small restaurant when its over to socialize.

I personally am leaning toward Saturday, April 18 for the Defensive Handgun I class. Anyone who's interested in some training and some face time with members... take a look at Jim's calendar and see what you think. Hopefully we can get a few folks together.

Here is the course info for the one I want to take (you have to have the basics going in)...

Here is a picture of those 35 rounds I shot. Not to bad for an old man on his first try. LOL

Marc.. I would be interested in some training/get together like that.

I did a class once at the NRA range in Fairfax, it was shoot no shoot class, and interesting. They had a projector up in the range with a paper screen. They projected scenarios and you had to decide to shoot or not shoot. After each person had a turn they would discuss what went on in the scenario and if you made the right choice. Everyone had at least one chance to put some holes in the paper projection screen.

So, I can count on you ladies being there then? Y'all some hard to look at cheer leaders, but beggars can't be choosers.

Cool, I'll start a running list. I'll contact Jim and ask when the cutoff for registration is and the max number of people.

That sounds like fun. I would like to try something like that one day.

So, I'll start the list here. I'm going to hold off on posting a registration link until after I talk to Jim, which hopefully will be tomorrow.

Marc
I should have checked my calendar first .. that's my son's cub scout campout so i cant make the 18th. Looks like a cool list of training ideas. I should be able to work in some time to go to the new elite shooters range sometime for practice.

I could be interested, as soon as I find out when my brother is coming in.

April's a no-go for me... Uncle sugar has plans for me. I've got a bunch of home time, but its going to be sporadic. Unless you have a real lucky date guess, don't cont on seeing me local until November.

Marc - no can do. Little brother lives and works in Vietnam. Comes home about once every five years. He's arriving that weekend and I need to be around. Let me know if you come up with another date.

Greg / Jim,
March is a tough month for me cash wise. I'm not sure I can do it this month. If April 18 doesn't work, how does Saturday, May 30 look for you guys?

Also... I would like to take both Defensive Handgun I and II There are back to back classes Saturday, June 13 for Defensive Handgun I and Saturday, June 27 for Defensive Handgun II.

Defensive Handgun II is not offered very often and I want to make the June 27th class. June 13 for Defensive Handgun I is the latest I'm willing to go.

At this point those dates are open on my calendar. I do have friends coming into town in June and we haven't set a date yet. If we do DH 1 on May 30th and 2 on June 27th, that would give me a little more flexibility with my June dates. But I could do DH 1 on June 13th. Don't know about you guys, but I won't be staying over. Also, at this point I'm going to limit myself to DH 1 and see how it goes. Although I'll probably have fun and want to do 2 as well.

I can do either. If May 30 works for you guys, I'm in. Just want to be sure I'm good to go on the June 27 class.

I am only an hour away from Jim, so I am not staying over either. I'm definitely cool with hanging out after the class to grab some grub and to BS too.

I won't get a chance to attend a class but I certainly would like to see someone (good pro instructor) post a few more comments like this from the Pharmacy Shooting thread.
It all comes down to proper grip, making the sights your mission and committing to proper trigger control. Lastly, we shoot the threat to the ground.

On a side note... The second shot Don fired hit the bad guy's weapon. It is very common for weapons, hands and arms to be hit during a gun fight. Learn to run your gun one handed, left and right. Attempting to learn these skills during a fight is not in your best interest.
They just make good sense.
