What do you do?
When your employer starts to behave more like a cult, and less like a corporation?
They're talking about "re-educating people against unconscious biases." Um... aren't I allowed to think what I want to think? As long as I am doing the job, and I am consistent in my behaviors, what I think is none of your business.
Or am I wrong in this?
Just asking.

Re: What do you do?
This is why I like working for myself, with no employees.
I believe I'd refuse the thought-control. If that didn't work I'd make 'em fire me. Just continue on doing the job and keeping a low profile. Eventually they'll throw a tantrum and fire you.

What I did do was make sure all knew that the speaker was practicing what he was preaching against.

Re: What do you do?
No, generally speaking, the thoughts of the employee are not the business of the employer.
What I would do would depend on how lucrative and replaceable the job is. Most companies,I have noticed, engage in some form of brain washing.
Last job that did that, I played along, poked a little fun (no one was bright enough notice), enjoyed the paid time to be goofy, enjoyed the free food and sodas. It's whatever. They want to pay you to be unproductive, let 'em. Their nickel. We all know that it's a pointless waste of time.
On the other hand, it's a glimpse into the enemy playbook. It's also a people watching experience. You might find out some useful information about someone.

I'll just discuss things like this with the folks in HR. They have a way of nipping this sort of problem in the bud.

Re: What do you do?
It's HR that's PUSHING these things!
that's what's frightening. I'm too old to be letting some "new fangled sociology/psychology" get under my skin. I mean fer crissakes, I have a DANCING BANANA as an icon EVERYWHERE!
My fear is not being the sub-servant, mindnumb robot that they want employed!
Never understood how they hire people to "think outside the box", then spend years trying to put them into one.
WRW and I had the SAME thought! "Wait! You're bias against me unconsciously about what my unconscious bias MAY be!"

I guess I should be thankful for where I work (which I am). But there is a lot to be said for "thinking outside the box", as it's called. Complacency doesn't help anyone.Reverenddel wrote:It's HR that's PUSHING these things!

I push back, push back... and when the pendulum swings the other way, I go from "maverick manager" and "not playing the game" to "thinking ahead" and "strategic wiz". Repeat every year.

Not enough information.
I'm sure it happens that employers do things because of unconscious biases that might compromise their employers' interests. I'm equally sure that "re-educating people against unconscious biases" can also mean some new-age metrosexual HR charlatan is brainwashing good folks about things that are none of the employer's business.
It's all context-dependent; and I'm betting you dasn't supply context. So there ain't much in the way of specific comment that can happen, it seems to me.
Life's a bitch and then you die.
I've been called a maverick and an iconoclast. But I don't work for those folks who say such things about me because I won't be herded. Screw'em.

Re: What do you do?
As a government employee, you would not believe the amount of training I have to take. It's utterly ridiculous, and 90 percent of it is useless. If you knew how your tax dollars were wasted producing this junk, and then paying employees to sit there and take this junk, you would be appalled.
Part of me says that if they want to pay me to take the training, then don't complain. But part of me spent too much time in school learning engineering and science to be content with wasting my time on this training. And another part of me gets annoyed that I often have to work overtime to take care of my real work because I spent too much time in yet another dumb training class.

Re: What do you do?
I suppose I should clarify; when I said that I usually "play along", I only meant in regard to the meeting. I go to the meeting, smile and nod, maybe asked a few questions to appear engaged... but, when the meeting is over, back to business as usual.
Those silly meetings won't change my mindsets, won't make me perform my duties any differently, and it won't change anybody else. Anyone inclined to think the way that they want folks thinking already think that way, and folks that think contrary will always think contrary.
Of course, when it comes to government employees, that's a whole 'nother ball of wax. The idea that my tax dollars are spent on such wasteful exercises in asininity is repugnant.

Patience, young Jedi. You have no idea how many classes of "political education" I had to take. And I was the only one in University history to fail at that
Play along for couple months. If you want to have fun, raise your hand in discussions, try to dissect the idea presented and to turn it into something ridiculous.
I had a lot of fun discussing main socialist ideas, like "equal pay". Ask them if they want to do all the work while you play games on your phone, and to get the same pay. Or if they want a member of their family to be treated by a brain surgeon who gets the same pay as the auto mechanic at the shop.
What I guess is that a stupid lib got into a key position at your work place. Expose him publicly for what it is.

Re: What do you do?
Every year, diversity training. Minority outreach training. All bullshit. Is there misogyny and racism in corporate America? Yes. All this training does is show people how to cover it up.
First, we get told to hire more black Americans. I point out that the percentage of black management is higher than the percentage of black Americans or black employees. (I'm in IT - not many black Americans.)
Then, we get told to hire more Latinos. I point out that the percentage of Latino management is higher than the percentage, etc.
We get told to hire more women. Valid... but I don't get résumés from women since they make up from 1-4% of graduating CS degrees, and more importantly, tend to go into PjM and DBA jobs, not sysadmin positions.
Then, when the women and racial minorities that work for me get promoted due to their hard work, people accuse them of being promoted due to "Diversity programs". They can't win. It makes me angry.
I point out that the percentage of Asian managers is wholly out of whack than the percentage of Asian employees, etc. I get told Asians don't count. WTF?
Then, when I am in a mgmt meeting, I ask, "What about handicapped employees?" Dead silence. "Oh, yeah, that's right, I hired a disabled vet - not because of his disability or minority status, but because he was the right person for the job." Dead silence, then the senior exec speaks up. "Well, maybe we should get a handicapped person in our management team. They might help fulfill our diversity goals." Laughter around the room until...
"I'm handicapped. So, do you want to rate me on my substantial accomplishments, or my 'disability'?" All eyes fix on me. Oh poop, mindflayer is handicapped?!? Then, "But you don't look like you're handicapped."
Yeah, *I'm* the bad one because I hire and promote people based on their qualifications and success....
Sorry for the rant. I just got home from work. I might be a little angry.

AS YOU SHOULD BE MINDFLAYER!
That whole process sounds RIDICULOUS!
I have always said, "What about just putting qualifications without any other pertinents on the app? THEN you delve into details when you have a pool of highly motivated, and trained individuals.".
I was told "Doesn't work that way"
Kelu hit it RIGHT on the money! Oh... i am gonna be myself, and ask a TON of questions!

Re: What do you do?
It just occurred to me that my current place of business has no HR department, which is rather odd for a company this size.
I'm fortunate, in that I don't have to deal with the standard workplace drama. I have other challenges, though, so I guess it's a trade off.
Generally speaking, as long as I can pick up my freight at the appointed time, and get it from A to B in a timely fashion, I don't really have to deal with anyone from the yard. So, I'm a happy camper , most of the time.

Re: What do you do?
(shakes head)
We just got an e-mail from our "Diversity" department asking us to tell our employer "Voluntarily" all about your disabilities.
And even if you don't think you don't have one? Check! Because you might, and not know it.
And remember "It's voluntary".
(Blinks) -deleted-
You know what? Until it becomes a condition of employment? You don't need to know a THING about my life that does NOT affect my job performance!
