Why carry at home?
Conversation I had this week:
Friend: “Do you carry a gun when you're home?”
Me: “Yes, I do.”
Friend: “No offense, but that sounds a bit nuts. Why would you do that?”
Me: “In your home, what do you value the most?”
Friend: “Oh, like my TV, and stuff I guess, I see what you mean....”
Me: “Really? More than your family?”
Friend: “Oh, poop, of course!”
Me: “And where is your family....?”
Friend: “Oh. Carry at home, I understand.”

Re: Why carry at home?
much easier to grab the gun from the hip than from the dresser/closet/safe/hide hole 30 feet away, that's for sure.
Re: Why carry at home?
The only reason I do not carry at home is because my young children are always jumping on me, playing, etc. My compromise is to have guns stashed in 5 different locations in my house. When the kids get older, this will change.

Re: Why carry at home?
My pistol stays with me unless I am in bed, the shower, or going to DC for work. When in bed or bath, its only arms reach away. It's on the desk in front of me as I type this message. My back door is only a few feet away from my desk. If the door is compromised, I have little chance to make it to a stashed weapon before an intruder could hurt me or my family.
I do have a 300 BO, and two M4's stashed in strategic locations in the house, in case the pistol isn't enough for the situation at hand. Say, I left the back door open on a cool summer afternoon and a bear wanders into the house. I really prefer not to find out if the .40 JHPs are gonna cut it.
I have to admit... it is a bit difficult to carry while you have small children. If you need or want to pick them up or carry them, its always a concern the your pistol could be compromised by the child. But... I am not convinced leaving them stashed around the house is a good idea. I know lots of people who do it or have done it with zero incident. Come to think of it, I have never heard of a negative result from anyone I know who did, but I personally was not comfortable with it. It stayed in the safe or my wife dealt with the kids.
I started to teach my kids to shoot when my daughter was 10 and my son was 7. Sat them down at the table to have the safety talk, how a sight picture worked, etc. I knew they had it when they could repeat it back to me and answer questions I asked them. I took them out to the woods with a 17 cal, single shot bolt action and spent weeks shooing empty cans and soda bottles. After that, I felt like I didn't need to worry about it any more.

I carry about 90% of the time at home. I also insisted that Carol carried around the house for several months after she received her CHP. I feel that she really needed to get comfortable carrying before she was out in public. I have to say that she has done very well with it !

Re: Why carry at home?
I recall reading, a while back, about a group of thugs that kicked in a familys front door, one evening. Not sure what the plan was, but I believe that the thugs got shot for their efforts.
Seems as good a reason as any to be armed at home.

I don't know about that being "as good a reason as any" -- I think it's the BEST reason to beSHMIV wrote:I recall reading, a while back, about a group of thugs that kicked in a familys front door, one evening. Not sure what the plan was, but I believe that the thugs got shot for their efforts.

There you go man. As mentioned above... The best reason.
In a situation like that at my house, the biggest concern is going to be cleaning us the blood stains.

It can happen anywhere at any time. We are not even SAFE in our own homes anymore. BE PREPARED before it is too late!

Re: Why carry at home?
My mother asked me, a few years ago, why I felt the need to carry a loaded gun in her house. ( While she's always been pro-2A, guns make her a little nervous )
I pointed out stories of bold home invasion, plus the number of registered sex offenders that live within 10 miles of the house.
Recently, she has started taking classes for getting her conceal carry permit. The thought of being a victim doesn't sit too well with her.

Good for her! Refusing to be a victim is a lot less common than some would think.
I wish I could get the women in my life into firearms. I can't protect them if I'm not home.

Re: Why carry at home?
In Moms case, she likes to be in control of herself. That's why drinking heavily has never appealed to her, and why the drug scene of the 60's and 70's didn't appeal to her.
Access to a firearm would potentially help her retain control in a situation that would, otherwise, leave her completely helpless and under the control of a malignant being.
In today's godless society, horrible things seem to be happening with greater frequency; riots in Ferguson, shootings in schools and various workplaces, etc.
Ferguson, thankfully, wasn't local to us, but it was damn sure local to somebody. A lot of somebody's! It could have just as easily been in our back yard.
Keep working on them, Marc. It wasn't until watching her children bear arms, that Mom started expressing an interest.

If you watch any news or read the "Armed Citizen" in American Rifleman from NRA you will learn thugs don't discriminate. They will attack anywhere.
