Right after I bought it, I went to Dick's, Gander Mtn and Wal-mart and loaded up on almost 2000 rounds of .22 longs (three different brands/types to see which one the new toy likes to eat). That should last us a trip or two to the range!

My new 10/22
This should be a lot of fun for the kids. Ok - it should be a lot of fun for me too

Re: My new 10/22
Nice, Rick. I've had a renewed passion for .22s lately. I was surprised when I pulled an old .20 gauge shotgun from its case yesterday to find it has a .22 barrel on top. I had forgotten about that. I do see a 10/22 in my future too...
No more catchy slogans for me...I am simply fed up...4...four...4...2+2...

Re: My new 10/22
These are really nice and fun to shoot, I was at the range last week and the guy at the next station had a new ruger 10/22 with factory iron sights, it was a blast to shoot and very accurate. I was hitting little metal pigs at 100 yards . I think he told me he paid like 170.00 at walmart.

Love the weapon Rick. Hate the scope mount. Anytime you put a see through mount on a rifle that will be shot for accuracy instead of the occasional close in shot where you need the open sights it is a problem. I don't care who you are if you can't cheek the stock in the same spot or as we said in the Marine's GET A STOCK WELD you will be inaccurate with the weapon. Sure you will get a groupe with it but it won't be worth a damn at any distance and then people start saying the weapon is at fault. This becomes a real problem with kid's as they can't get a good sight picture with the scope when they can't place their cheek on the weapon. Just my thought's.

Re: My new 10/22
Good feedback there Bill. I was wondering how the kids would do with the scope - getting the viewpoint just right, etc. I'll probably run it with the scope the first time we go out and may take it off later and make them use the iron sights. Either way, I'm glad you mentioned this.SgtBill wrote:Love the weapon Rick. Hate the scope mount. Excellent Rick. I love my 10/22. Velocitor is my preferred round, and then mini-mags. I've found that damn near everything works with those Ruger magazines, but all the extension mags are finicky -- some much more than others.
And of course, the first mod you are gonna want to invest in is the bolt release:

That's a good one. I hate how the stock bolt release works. Thanks for the link.LFS wrote:And of course, the first mod you are gonna want to invest in is the bolt release:

Re: My new 10/22
Check Brownells or MidwayUSA. I know I bought mine on-line, just can't remember where. But yeah, the factory bolt release is kinda weird and seems to require 3 hands.allingeneral wrote:That's a good one. I hate how the stock bolt release works. Some people say you ought to get a bolt buffer, but I'm not sold on mine. In fact, I think it is the cause of some misfeeds with third party mags. I just haven't gotten around to taking it back out to test my theory.

Re: My new 10/22
Here's a youtube video that shows how to replace the bolt stop. Also shows that the only modification required is to file or dremel the little pointed part out of the hole that catches the bolt.
Only problem - it looks like this will cause the bolt to not be held back after the last round is fired.

Re: My new 10/22
Here's a video on installing one of the bolt release plates (they are all pretty much the same):
The difference between the factory bolt release and one of the quick bolt releases seems to be an additional U shape in one of the holes. So it seems likely you could do it yourself with a dremel. However, without a pattern I don't know how you'd get it right.
The 10/22 doesn't do bolt hold open after the last shot (another annoyance), and these quick bolt releases won't fix that. There's another part for that. I haven't done it, so I can't offer much advice there.

Re: My new 10/22
I took it apart yesterday and got the bolt release out, then proceeded to grind it down with my dremel tool. Reinstalled it and it works like a dream! I haven't fired it yet, but all seems to be in working order, and now I can release the bolt by just pulling back on it and I don't have to mess with that silly release button!

Gun porn is in the OP. It still looks the same
Re: My new 10/22
Be warned, stay away from RFC or you quickly start 'tweaking' the rifle and the next thing you know there will be several more 10/22s in the gunsafe (not that its a bad thing) in various configurationsallingeneral wrote:This should be a lot of fun for the kids. There are a ton of how-to vids and 3rd party parts for it. Most are reasonably priced and pretty useful. I have 2 so far, one in 22lr and the other I converted to .17M2 for crows/tree rats.

Does anybody have any opinions on barrels for the 10/22? I'm thinking about this one:

Re: My new 10/22
LFS - what do you intend to use the rifle for?
The reason I'm asking is that TacSol barrels are nice and most get them for the weight (same with WhistlePig). There are others considered better for the price as well. The same goes for the type of ammo (hyper, subsonic, etc) you intend to use and and what chamber the maker uses for the barrel.

Re: My new 10/22
I use that rifle for plinking. However, I would like it to be a bit more accurate. I honed in on the TacSol barrels because they are light. I want to keep the weight down so that my wife can shoot this gun easily. I do admit that having a threaded barrel may entice me to put a suppressor on there one day, too.
I use either CCI Mini-Mags or CCI Velocitor for the most part.
Would you recommend something else? Have you used something else?

Re: My new 10/22
One option would be to keep your stock barrel and send it off to Nemohunter over on RFC to 'tweak' it. He recrowns and rechambers the barrel with better tolerances and have heard only great things from many different owners on multiple forums. He can also do bolt work to improve reliability as well. The price is reasonable (less than a TacSol) from what I recall and the steel barrel one won't get peened by the bolt like the aluminum/sleeved one (like TacSol) can with a lot of use.
With that said I don't own a Nemo-ized one YET but plan on sending him one of my takeoff barrels after Xmas so when I get another 10/22 next spring I can simply swap the barrel out. The next firearm purchase is a pistol for the daughter when she graduates from G.Mason in the spring. I want to have a nearly stock looking rifle for teaching/training but want it to be as accurate as possibe. I believe he can thread the barrel as well as tweak the bolt as well. There are others that provide the service such as Skeeter from RimfireTech and Randy from CPC.
If you wanna go that route I've got an extra takeoff stock barrel that's yours for the taking so you could still shoot until the tweaked barrel came back...
I have a pair of Rugers, both in Predator TRex stocks with a 22lr bull barrel from Green Mountain and a RT Quantum in 17Mach2 (with an RT bolt). Both rifles are accurate, consistant and are capable of better accuracy than I can shoot. The 22lr is a bit too heavy even for me to comfortably carry all day or the daughter to shoot offhand while the M2 isn't much heavier than the original rifle.
Cheers
