Server move/upgrade this weekend

We will be moving to a new server over the weekend. I'm not certain when I will be cutting over to the new IP address, but hoping to make it as seamless as possible. A couple of things might happen:

1) It will all work fine and no one will be any the wiser
2) It will all work fine, but it will take a few minutes of downtime to sort it all out
3) Something will break and it will take an hour to get everything up and running smoothly
4) Something bad will happen and VGOF will be down for two days.

So - I'm hoping for the first one! Wish me luck!

LoL! Nice. Are you changing the front-end, back-end, or both? I know some BB's have intergrated DB's.

Changing the back-end. Upgrading to CentOS 6.5 which will upgrade all of the back-end parts and pieces (Apache, PHP, MySQL, etc). Hopefully, the upgraded versions won't break anything (i.e. deprecated functionality).

Also moving to a new set of IP addresses as part of the upgrade. DNS TTL set to 300, so hopefully a max of 5 minutes downtime. We'll see about that, though.

It's funny you mention the DNS TTL. I just got done troubleshooting a "fail-over" problem for one of my customers. Instead of a real cluster, my customer has scripts monitoring 2 nodes. If the main node fails for any reason, the script deletes the DNS "A" record and creates a new one to point to the passive server (which is really just a hot stand-by). They said everything worked fine in testing, but when they went live, the fail-over didn't work after the 2nd or 3rd fail-over attempt. Go to find out the script wasn't setting the TTL when it switched the "A" record and it was defaulting to 7 days (default Microsoft value). LOL

I was getting page not found .. sometime around 2-3am
but figured since it was that time of night/morning .. it was maintenance/ service time anyway
