Question for Eastern Virginians
Question for Eastern Virginians
Recently took a four day vacation to Williamsburg and environs (cool area), was my first time going east of Bedford, so it was nice to see more of Virginia.
However, one thing puzzled me in the Williamsburg+Norfolk area.
At the exits of the major roads the exits had raised red+white gate arms...what is the deal with those? I've never seen them anywhere else in America.
Just curious if there is a story there.

They are for hurricane evacuations, they shut the eastbound on ramps and run all lanes west.
Now is the time for all good men to get off their rusty dustys...

Thanks, had a feeling it was something mundane.Palladin wrote:They are for hurricane evacuations, they shut the eastbound on ramps and run all lanes west.

Re: Question for Eastern Virginians
It is because of the populations of the tidewater. If there is a serious hurricane they will need all the lanes available to get people out. Having lived there it was a serious deal. Flooding is devastating there with just mild storms, a big one would be unbelievable.
My family evacs out 460 when they must (to our house). In the past ten years they have had to leave 3 times. Living by the beach has it's costs.

Maybe if NJ hadn't considered it "mundane" the yankees wouldn't have been walloped by a class 1...

So does the same thing apply to New Orleans, or are they exempt because they are Rebels?

Nah, the idiots who built a city in a major river delta didn't give a rats patuti about the blacks that have been promised the moon and stars and been crapped on. SOSDD for the Dems.Newgunguy wrote:So does the same thing apply to New Orleans, or are they exempt because they are Rebels?

The wise man builds his house upon a rock......New Orleans is not just built on sand, but on sand below sea level. Even my parents house in Va beach is 8 feet above sea level.

It's definitely a special place. The Colonial Williamsburg +Jamestown Settlement people do a great job, and Williamsburg proper is a very nice town. Even saw a street preacher doing his thing, and unlike the ones in NYC this guy wasn't just arguing with a mailbox, how cool is that?SHMIV wrote:Glad you enjoyed Williamsburg, Kreutz.

It was my wife's idea to go, she went as a kid in 1990, I was attracted to the history and chance to see more of Virginia. The ample shopping attracted the wife naturally.

We'll definitely go back again when the kids are older, their main interest was Busch Gardens and Water Country.

That is a cool area. Standing on the battlefield, in Yorktown, where Washington stomped Cornwallis was pretty cool. Really liked the gunsmith in Williamsburg.

I lived in "The County" for quite a few years. And just recently bought a log cabin in Williamsburg but still inside York County. I love this area. So much to do outdoors as well as Busch Gardens, Water Country, Jamestown etc...

We went there first, gotta say the museum/visitor center was impressive. Kids had fun chasing the chickens around and handling the weapons.Reverenddel wrote:Next visit? Go to Jamestown, and see where the COUNTRY started!

I boarded the reproductions of the three ships and kept forgetting they weren't staffed by Puritans....my history education was very New England-centric.

Speaking of the ships, a fun thing to do is to stand on the ferry dock and listen to the tourists refer to them as the Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria. Lol.

Nothing at all wrong with learning New England history. Our country is so large and so rich with history that one could never learn it all.Kreutz wrote:We went there first, gotta say the museum/visitor center was impressive. Don't think anyone mentioned Civil War history to you. The Richmond National Battlefield
Park includes many sites spread around the area. There were a lot of battles around RIchmond - Cold Harbor was probably the largest.
In Petersburg, there is the Pamplin Historical Park, which includes the National Museum of the Civil War Soldier. Up 95 is Frederickburg which was a battle site, and nearby is The Wilderness Battle site.
Down the north shore of the James River in Charles CIty County and going east on Route 5 are the James River Plantations. My two favorites are Shirley Plantation (descendants of the Hill and Carter families still live in the house and Robert E. Lee reportedly lived there for a short time); and Berkley Plantation (home of Benjamin Harrison who signed the Declaration of Independence). The Presidents William Henry Harrison and Benjamin Harrison are descendants.
I'll shut up because you may not be a dedicated history buff - LOL - but you can find lots of places to indulge a light interest in history.

Re: Question for Eastern Virginians
That's the thing that irritates me about the Carpetbaggers getting into office. They have NO idea what a sense of HISTORY this state can provide as a TOURIST destination!
Between STARTING the nation, DEFENDING the newborn nation, and attepting to RECTIFY the advance of Federalism...
Virginia used to be a pretty awesome place to live, and claim!
Now? M'eh! The Carpetbagger invasion has muddled, and weakened it's history.
