NOVA meet up

Post by minininjer »

Hi all, I'm newish to this forum and new to living in VA. I'm a Massachusetts transplant. My husband and I live in Sterling... we're looking for some like minded people to hang out with. We both work from home so it's a bit hard to meet local people.

So, anyone out there would like to do a meet up sometime? Maybe at a restaurant or bar? I'd be willing to drive somewhere up to an hour if that's more convenient for folks.

Unrelated note: I just realized that I don't have a place to shoot my Mosin

Welcome. I am a Mass transplant myself.

Quantico Marine Corps base has an outdoor range that I am pretty sure civilians can use by joining their shooting club. It's a bit far from me but I have been considering it.

If you live in Sterling, some of the ranges in WV aren't too far away.

We had a meet-up at Sharpshooters a couple of years ago. I recall that it was a nice time. Someone brought a bunch of guest passes.

Or maybe an OC dinner...

I'd say just put a location, date and time out there and see who jumps onboard.

I'm in the South Riding area not too far from you. My wife and I generally shoot at the NRA range. Once my work travel season is over, I would be happy to take you both there.

I also go to the NRA range usually once a week (monday AM). There are plenty of places to shoot your Mosin, indoor and outdoor that are pretty close to you. Silver Eagle Group would be the range that's really close, followed by Blue Ridge Arsenal.

I think it's about time to get a NOVA meet-up scheduled.

BTW, check the thread about this year's picnic at the COVE campground as well.

If you're looking for a good place to shoot your mosin you could try CF Phelps wma sighting in range if you've got a hunting license, it's required though I don't think they check. But considering most negants aren't rigged for a scope, and depending on your accuracy, NRA is a safe bet even though it's only 50 yards. Then there's Clark's Brothers out in Warrenton, which has 50 and 100 yard ranges but on nice days is usually crowded. Besides that there is the aforementioned Quantico base.

Yep, but still can't shoot the Mosin there. No 'com block' ammo is allowed on their range.

IMO unless you want access to the longer range ranges, there are better choices with less restriction than the QSC... but if you do want 300+ yd ranges their are few ranges that are as nice as QSC

340 Defense in WV is good for long-shots. It's on Rt 340 (hence the name) about halfway between Berryville, VA and Charles Town, WV. It's about 1 hour from Sterling (Rt 7 west to Rt 340 north, or Rt 7 west to 9 north to 340 south).

Phelps doesn't require you to have a hunting license. Where'd you read that?

If you go, shoot me a PM, I head down there regularly to sight in stuff.

Oh, I see I am wrong, but ANY hunting/fishing/trapping permit will do.

Sorry, guess I learned something!

Thanks for that info on that no Com Bloc Ammo thing, jdonovan. I did not know that and certainly won't be joining it now.

It took some searching but I did find a reference on their website. It says, "The following ammunition is restricted from use until the Marine Corps can complete dispersal area testing and determine the allowable safe usage. These include, but are not limited to: 5.45 x 39 mm, 7.62 x 25 mm, 7.62 x 39 mm, 7.62 x45 mm, 7.62 x 54 R, 9 x 18 mm."

I don't understand how Brown Bear 5.56 is fine but Brown Bear 5.45 is somehow too dangerous.

Surface danger zone calculations.

The range was designed for certain well known cartridges used by the US mil.

I believe they had an incident where one of the com-block rounds penetrated, a backstop, or else wise left the range area, and thus is became prohibited.

Update on my original point of my post: there is an OC dinner here in Sterling tonight. We're going to hit this up!

7pm at
Buffalo Wings Factory Inc
22034 Shaw Rd, Sterling, Virginia 20164

If anyone is going to this.... see you there!

Thanks everyone for the different suggestions on where I can take my Mosin. I'm not looking for any kind of long range at all. Just somewhere where I can shoot it; I miss having an outdoor range to shoot at...

Ugh.... My bad, haha.

However, this seems like a good / gun friendly location. And to be frank and selfish, it's pretty close to us, so I'll give more of a heads up next time!! :)

Ayeee, we do have memberships at SEG. All I've got for my Mosin is Russian surplus though... guess I'll need to start buying non steel core for it then.
