Toby Keith & "No Guns" policy

Post by AlanM »

This has hit the national news.

No guns policy at new Toby Keith restaurant in Woodbridge (Va)
WOODBRIDGE, Va. -

A big country star opened a huge, new restaurant last week in Woodbridge, Va. But a house rule for the new establishment is roiling some Virginians: no guns are allowed inside.

Toby Keith is not only a hugely successful country star (and actor), he also has personally opened a couple of restaurants, and through other companies, has now expanded those establishments into about a dozen cities.

The latest Toby Keith restaurant opened in Woodbridge. Prominently displayed on the front door is a sign saying: “NO GUNS PERMITTED.”

Virginia happens to be a gun-friendly state, where it’s quite permissible for citizens to strap on a weapon and go into a bar or restaurant, as long as the weapon is clearly visible. State law is silent on the issue of drinking while openly carrying a gun. (State law does prohibit most citizens who are legally carrying a concealed weapon from consuming alcohol, but they, too, are allowed to go into a bar or restaurant.)

The wife showed me a post about this last night. I told her I guess we don't need to worry about going there. We are in the Stonebridge shopping center often and was looking forward to this place opening. Its been under construction for a long time.

He's gotten a little big for his britches. Saw him in concert once. He's a drunk. Didn't pay good money to listen to a drunk try and play Toby Keith songs. I can do that all on my own and never leave the house. Now this?

<Yawn>..... I wouldn't have gone there anyway. Joints like Cracker Barrel and Bob Evans have already given country cookin' a bad name in my book. Don't wanna see any more ersatz down-home cookin' in a jumped-up fern bar just so a country singer can chase some more bucks. So I'll just invoke one of my favorite tautologies: If it doesn't matter, it doesn't matter. Or as Kreutz might say: meh.

So Toby Keith is more PC than Starbucks?

I guess he's not such a tough guy after all. So much for a boot up their ass, and all that.

A business is free to do whatever they want however they need to not lull people into a false sense of security. Without having everyone searched at the door all they can do is hope its gun free.

As a citizens we have the right to stay clear of this and other establishments who chose to be so blind.

This place is 5 minutes from my house. Went once, saw the sign on the way in and left. Haven't been back since.

In a separate incident, my kid went there looking for a job before the opening, but when she heard about the "no gun" policy, she changed her mind... even after a callback offer. Smart girl. LOL

Has anyone actually sent an E-mail, or found out WHY that policy exists?

Once more? Did Toby Keith sell his name to the establishment, and it's run by another corporation, or does he personally OWN the chain?

I'm no where NEAR the place, so my give a crap level is low, but still... more curious than anything.

Okay... here is what I sent. Lets see if they respond.
To whom it may concern:
I live in Woodbridge, Virginia; just minutes away from your location. I arrived at your establishment for the first time and spotted a sign on the door disallowing firearms. I promptly turned around and left. It is likely that I will not return until this policy is changed.

An anti-gun stance goes against the very patriotic “boot in their ass” personification that Toby Keith seems to echo in his music. In fact, it defies the Constitution and civil liberties guaranteed by the Bill of Rights. Also, Virginia is a right to carry state, is very gun friendly and it seems that you are alienating a decent percentage of potential customer base.

Being a private business, you are obviously entitled to do as you wish. I’m sure you are not hurting for business, but this choice seem very un-American. I am interested in the reason behind this choice. As a potential customer, would it be possible for an explanation of this policy to be provided to me? Are there any exceptions to this policy, such as Concealed Handgun Permit holders, Law Enforcement Officers, etc.?

Any clarification would be greatly appreciated. I would love to try the restaurant, but I can’t see financially supporting a company that does not support me or my civil liberties.

Kudos Marc. My wife and I ate at the place across the street awhile back and looked forward to the opening of TK's place. I usually do not look for the gun busters sign and believe in concealed means concealed. I look forward to reading their response to your email.
