I want to say I am not trying to start a debate. Just trying to pass on a comforting word.

"I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend."
We know how the book ends....
Thanks for the post.
There are only two kinds of people in the end: those who say to God, 'Thy will be done,' and those to whom God says, in the end, 'Thy will be done.'
-C. S. Lewis
Mamabear, neither your comments nor those of the gentleman who wrote the article, and indeed not anything Tolkien wrote) bothers me at all. Just the opposite, they encourage and reinforce me. My son discovered Tolkien & C. S. Lewis in college. The books (and movies based on them) of both have been a great source of entertainment and training to his three children.
I am going to look at the Gospel Coalition website and may pass it on to some others.
Thanks for posting this.

I Love This Country! It's The Government That Scares The Hell Outta Me!
Funny, I was in church today (Stop laughing), and while listening to The Woman singing I found this again:
Daniel 2:20-23;
“Praise be to the name of God for ever and ever;
wisdom and power are his.
He changes times and seasons;
he deposes kings and raises up others.
He gives wisdom to the wise
and knowledge to the discerning.
He reveals deep and hidden things;
he knows what lies in darkness,
and light dwells with him.
I thank and praise you, God of my ancestors:
You have given me wisdom and power,
you have made known to me what we asked of you,
you have made known to us the dream of the king.”
Excellent piece. I think it also gives insight into the minds of many an anti. They believe they are fighting the long defeat and will never give up their efforts to ban all guns because "they believe it is the right thing to do".
Of course they are in error, but nevertheless, they will continue to fight with passion.
Therefore, I find myself become more involved in the fight to ADVANCE the 2A cause.

I'll just go ahead and tell y'all the truth. I tried to read Tolkien a time or two (a long time ago), and I just couldn't. So, not having read any of the "Ring" works, I didn't get a whole lot out of the linked article.

Gun-crazy? Me? I'd say the gun-crazy ones are the ones that don’t HAVE one.
That's alright DormisWS. Tolkien requires a certain type if reader. If you want to get a cliff notes version of Tolkien watch the movies.
Widefat, Of course we try to advance. We may succeed, but there are no guarantees, but fight we must, for it is wrong to take the means by which a person may resist evil.

Thank you for posting this Mamabear. I was just at church today speaking with a Stafford County Sheriffs Deputy and we were lamenting why it seems that the evil in our world appears unbeatable. I left church thinking: "God? How do we win?" After reading this I received my answer. It isn't about winning or losing it's about persevering through to the end.
Psalm 46:10 "Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth."
Ratherfish has it right. We know how it ends....we just have to get there.

I've tried to watch the movies before, too. To me it's like watching a foreign language movie that would be boring and unintelligible even in English. Just can't get into it. Don't know why.
I do agree that life is about staying on the right road notwithstanding obstacles. Now, I don't mean what I'm about to say in a negative way; just by way of stating the ugly truth (or at least probability) as I see it: If that's a secret to anybody, I'd say maybe that explains why the world is so screwed up these days; it's so full of folks that can't cope with reality and/or rules for life. Seems to me that way too many people expect to be constantly amused and find the day-to-day business of living (and carrying the burdens life deals everyone) just too oppressively burdensome.

It's the grind of life that builds character. Getting up every day, doing what has to be done. When you work with people who are great at chiming in, but lousy on follow-thru... you determine whose keister isn't dependable.
Doesn't matter if they show, if they're not "there" to do the muck work, but just stand there in overalls, and say "I'm really motivated!" who cares?
It's the phrase from "The Big Chill" that brought it together many years ago for me:
" There's some ass at work you have to kowtow to, and you find yourself doing things you thought you'd never do. But you try and minimize that stuff; be the best person you can be. But you set your priorities. And that's the way life is. I wonder if your friend Alex knew that. One thing's for sure, he couldn't live with it. I know I shouldn't talk; you guys knew him. But the thing is... no one ever said it would be fun. At least... no one ever said it to me. " -Richard
And right there, the phrase I have used my entire life came into fruition:
"Life is not fair. Life is hard...get used to it."
