Buying Standard Capacity Magazines Before a Gun.
The recent election has me thinking about buying some magazines before a potential ban. The problem being that the only guns I have that would accept such devices are a 597 and a Glock 22, I would buy some more 15/22 round Glock mags but can't find any. Truth be told I want to buy something for a Mid-powered rifle, likely an AR, SKS, or Mini-14/30, which I plan to purchase later but don't have the money to do so now and won't for some time. Buying just the magazines assumes two things.
1). That a magazine ban is likely without a ban on the rifles that it would feed.
2). That all existing Standard Capacity Magazines would be grandfathered in.
Picked these rifles because in a worst case scenario, if I never acquire them I have friends/family that already own them and could trade the magazines for Non-profit/loss for something I can use.
The question being, is this forward thinking or am I just pissing up a rope?

I would add something. My friend told me that in CT, since Oct 1st, you can't buy any kind of ammo without a license.
So you may want to buy ammo too.
And while I'm at this, something interesting. At Dicks, when I buy ammo, they ask me if I am a citizen or resident. Yesterday at Walmart, I got some 22 subsonic and they did not seem to care if I am illegal immigrant or not; they only wanted to know if I will use them in a rifle or handgun. There isn't a standard set of rules?

I've always gone with the idea of getting mags for the guns you do have. A box of AR mags won't do you any good if you changed your mind and ended up purchasing an AK. Of course a box of mags won't do you any good if you don't have any gun to shoot either.

There is also a presumption that, if there was a ban and grandfathering, one could legally transfer the box magazines if you find no use for them.

To me Magazines are like Ammo...Buy them when you see them. They are not ever going to be cheaper. They won't spoil. Could also be a fairly good investment and can always be a great BARTER item !

I'm paying cash and I'm NEVER registering anything. Who is going to follow or enforce such a law, as the person in possession could always claim to be the original owner.GeneFrenkle wrote:There is also a presumption that, if there was a ban and grandfathering, one could legally transfer the box magazines if you find no use for them.

Seems to work in CA! LOL Yup, concur that it would be a challenge to enforce.

It's on my short list, but the main point here is that if I ever buy a box fed carbine/rifle, the biggest advantage it has over a hunting rifle is the magazine. If I can't have the magazines then I'd skip any of these rifles.

I am skwerling away ammo and mags for weapons I do own. Mags do wear out and break, springs fatigue, etc.Snakester wrote:To me Magazines are like Ammo...Buy them when you see them. I have a buddy of mine who is along the same lines of thinking. He has over 300 AR mags and more than 26,000 rounds of steel core 5.56 rounds. Man after my own heart. LOL
Honestly, if things go really bad and we completely lose our AR's via forceful confiscation, I have 3 high powered lever action rifles that hold 8 rounds each and have way more stopping power than an AR. You would be surprised at how many loose rounds you can carry in a couple of tac bags on an LBE vest or tac belt. Make sure you have side load rifles for ease of use. I'm sure with some practice (like with everything else) you can do pretty damn good in a fire fight if needed.BertMacklin wrote:It's on my short list, but the main point here is that if I ever buy a box fed carbine/rifle, the biggest advantage it has over a hunting rifle is the magazine. I am thinking of making other arrangements to prevent unconstitutional seizure of my weapons. Hopefully it will never get that far.

I don't see harm is buying up some mags for a gun that you don't yet own, assuming you have the cash to spare. As was previously stated, at the very least, it would make a good bartering item.
Probably wouldn't hurt to maintain a bartering stash, anyway.

I own some "standard" capacity magazines for several guns I don't own (and many more for the ones I do own). None of the magazines are worth less than when I bought them. I have used them in trades in the past, especially when I knew I was no longer interested in owning a particular weapon. I have given them as gifts to friends and acquaintances. I see no problem with buying some magazines for that rifle you have been eyeing. It may take the sting out of waiting.
Re: Buying Standard Capacity Magazines Before a Gun.
I did that a couple years ago. After getting my M&P 9MM I figured I'd get a M&P .357 SIG next. So, I saw magazines for a good price and ordered 4. I got them and it was about 4 or 5 months before I got the M&P in .357 SIG (it was initially a .40 S&W but the magazines are the same and I bought a .357 SIG barrel from Midway and that is what I shoot in the pistol). Neat thing about the .40 S&W and .357 SIG. If you own either, many of the pistol manufacturers make extra barrels so you can shoot either caliber if you buy a barrel for it.
AR 15 magazines are pretty darned cheap right now. I'm seeing PMags at gunshows for $12/$14 each, GI magazines (aluminum) bought in 10 packs from some companies for right around $100 to $110. AK mags are still a couple bucks more expensive right now.

Don't try to second guess "what ifs". Just go about saving up for the rifle.

I have 3 PMAGs and no AR or plans to buy one. Reminds me I need to buy an AR. I'm thinking on of this m&p sports. What do they go for these days? Less than $800?

Don't know pricing, but M&P provides the best value option on a quality AR. Go for it!
