New to VA from PA
Hey everybody, the name is uniballin, nice to meet you.
I recently moved to McLean from PA and I just want to make sure I understand things correctly.
I am under the impression that: My LTCF from PA is valid in VA due to reciprocity... meaning I do not need to get a VA license/permit/whatever they call it here.
Are there any major differences between PA and VA that I need to know about? Carrying in bars? Duty to inform when pulled over? Stuff like that. Thank you in advance, and I look forward to partaking in future discussions with you all.

Welcome! http://www.vsp.state.va.us/Firearms.shtm has a wealth of information for you. You're in a free state, so I'd why not just get the VA carry permit? It's easy to do.

Thanks for resources, guys.
So according to handgunlaw.us, you cannot consume alcohol while carrying. Does this only apply to conceal carry?
I thought this was a free state :p

not sure it stands if you are now a resident of VA. The PA permit was for a PA resident. If you are now a VA resident, isn't it no longer valid?
And welcome!

This is a free state. You're free to do foolish things and take responsibility for the consequences for those actions.
http://www.vsp.state.va.us/Firearms_Res ... ealed.shtm
Any person permitted to carry a concealed handgun who is under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs while carrying such handgun in a public place is guilty of a Class 1 misdemeanor. A person who carries a concealed handgun onto the premises of such a restaurant or club and consumes alcoholic beverages is guilty of a Class 2 misdemeanor. However, nothing in this subsection shall apply to a federal, state, or local law-enforcement officer.

Re: New to VA from PA
So how is it a free state if you just posted a law saying that it is a crime to conceal carry a gun and be under the influence of alcohol?
So after a beer or two with dinner, your right to defend yourself completely goes out the window? Doesn't sound very free to me.

Re: New to VA from PA
But to be clear, I can openly carry while having a beer with dinner? Just not conceal carry.
Re: New to VA from PA
I'm not sure if I'm technically a VA resident. I am just here for school. My car, driver's license, etc. are all still tied to PA. I will apply for a VA permit this week just to cover all of my bases though.Remek wrote:not sure it stands if you are now a resident of VA. The PA permit was for a PA resident. So long as PA says your PA permit is still good, it's OK in VA.uniballin wrote:I'm not sure if I'm technically a VA resident. I am just here for school. Do as you see fit. Perhaps you'd be more inclined to introduce legislation to change that standing law. Can't get much freer than that.

Re: New to VA from PA
I'd encourage you to do exactly that. Just, please don't confuse laws against drinking a beer while carrying concealed with lack of freedom. If you're carrying concealed, how would someone know when you're eating that juicy steak and sipping that nice beer? No one, until something bad happens (when someone would actually care). Then a suddenly complex situation sudenly gets even worse, both criminally and civily. You can do the action, just be prepared if there is a consequence to it.
Consider freedom the ability to open carry in the local Walmart. Here, it's by and largely fine (might get a nasty look from someone). I've read and heard some interesting stories about doing that in McLean-sized cities in PA. Point being there are bigger things at hand than drinking a beer while concealed carrying that no one would care about in the regular case.
VA isn't perfect, but it's better than some other states, and worse than others. The trick is to keep it moving forward, increasing our freedoms, and reducing government involvement in our day-to-day existance.

VA, in my estimation is great as far as states go. I'd like to see protection of property. I'd also like to see required ownership and training for citizens, but i might as well wish for obama to respect the laws.
Where does VA fall short in others opinions?

County consistency in following chp laws. Kinda strange that one of the "allegedly" worst counties is the very one the NRA HQ resides. LEO education on carry laws, for another (getting better though). The difference in legality between CHP holder status and things like threaded muzzles. stupid and pointless items need cleaning first, imo.
