Pie in the sky, and runoff elections

Post by Remek »

Given the discussions I've had concerning voting in the present Gubenatorial race, it occurred to me that it might not be a bad idea to have run off races, instead of a straight one-day election.

In a runoff election, you vote, and the least popular candidate is dropped from the race. Then you vote again, for those left over, and the process can repeat until a single person is elected by a majority of the people.

downside: the process can take several days to complete.

Anyone else have an opinion on this? I do believe I may be in the minority, but I'd love to hear why.

It doesn't seem an unreasonable proposition.

Not sure if it would solve much outside of ending the silly arguments we have here, though.

I like the idea. I also think an option that should be added to the ballot should be to request a new pool of candidates.

Yeah, because if the French do it , it is wrong. Great logic. Sort of like saying hitler never had a good idea. Just because you dont like something overall does not mean there arent some good things within it.

seems like too many voting days...its hard enough to get people to vote just one day, how do you think the turnout would be if it took several days? Also you must realize that schools are used as voting places and school is normally out or early release on voting days.

Sarcasm.

I'm actually rather fond of the French to a point.

Run-offs are a bad idea in the US due to the problems of low turn-out and large sums of money involved in elections.

Sorry. I missed it originally.

I see the turnout problem. Maybe we can move elections from the schools, and maybe reduced turnout would help stop the lazy assed leeches from voting?

A better solution would be to scrap our federally and NEA-dominated school system and produce new crops of well-educated, well-informed voters with critical thinking skills instead of mass-produced cannon fodder for the "victimhood" industry that have been indoctrinated for 12 years to be ignorant, uninformed, statist socialists. It would be a long, hard pull, but a damn good start would be to abolish he U. S. Department of Education and terminate its programs.

You've got a point, but I dont trust private entities either.

The thing is, the core goal of our school system is not math, science or english, but its actually to make informed voters (no poop thats the truth). How'd we get where we are now? I bet many here have heard, but not read, the federalist papers, and many few have even heard of the anti federalist papers. Yet the anti federalist papers are the reason we have a union, and the reason the constitution is trumped by that part known as the bill of rights and the other amendments to the constitution.

However, its almost a moot point. Without good people in office, none of this will be fixed, and programming will continue to have sway in our education system until good men can fix it supplant it with fact.

I'd note that blaming the NEA here seems a bit ridiculous. Maybe other issues, but its our government that has decided it is good program kids, rather than teach them to make thier own minds up based on the facts.

The NEA is due plenty of blame. They have systematically subordinated the interests of the schools and students to those of teachers; and as a device to further and to finance that course of action, they have whole-heartedly embraced the federalization and subsequent debasement of education in this country. Just one more labor union in symbiosis with the progressives.

But they trained the minds that promote it!

I believe all control of education should be at the local level. Want a certain education....vote with your feet and move to a place that has it supporting them with your local taxes.

"Common Core" is just one more iteration of what's at the center of the rotten apple.

We are pretty much in agreement.

We need to get people in office to change the process back to what it was originally. May take a while at this rate ...

Getting folks in office to fix things will be damn near impossible, at this point. Kreutz has pointed out, more than once, that we advocate many things that a great portion of the populace doesn't want. And, he is right. Dormin is right about the education system. The education system has done far more harm than those holding elected office; the education system would be more accurately referred to as The Department of Brainwashing and Indoctrination. That's all they've done, and that was always inevitable. It's the education system that has produced misinformed and mislead voters. Which is why Kreutz is absolutely right when he points out that a large portion of the population holds no value to the things that we value; they've been trained that way.

There is a reason that the socialist faction hit the schools first.

Guys, Guys! I know how to fix the turnout issue if we do runoffs!

We can let people vote electronically from home using the Healthcare.Gov site... you know, since no one else is using it.
