California: The New Feudal State

Post by Kreutz »

http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2 ... itude.html
As late as the 80s, California was democratic in a fundamental sense, a place for outsiders and, increasingly, immigrants—roughly 60 percent of the population was considered middle class. Now, instead of a land of opportunity, California has become increasingly feudal. According to recent census estimates, the state suffers some of the highest levels of inequality in the country. By some estimates, the state’s level of inequality compares with that of such global models as the Dominican Republic, Gambia, and the Republic of the Congo.

At the same time, the Golden State now suffers the highest level of poverty in the country—23.5 percent compared to 16 percent nationally—worse than long-term hard luck cases like Mississippi. It is also now home to roughly one-third of the nation’s welfare recipients, almost three times its proportion of the nation’s population.

Like medieval serfs, increasing numbers of Californians are downwardly mobile, and doing worse than their parents: native born Latinos actually have shorter lifespans than their parents, according to one recent report. Nor are things expected to get better any time soon. According to a recent Hoover Institution survey, most Californians expect their incomes to stagnate in the coming six months, a sense widely shared among the young, whites, Latinos, females, and the less educated.

Some of these trends can be found nationwide, but they have become pronounced and are metastasizing more quickly in the Golden State. As late as the 80s, the state was about as egalitarian as the rest of the country. Now, for the first time in decades, the middle class is a minority, according to the Public Policy Institute of California.
Rest at link.

Kind of a long read, but an interesting read nonetheless. Figured I'd post it here for the wonkier types since it is said as goes California, so goes the nation.

Interesting how the author states the only real challenge to the CA status quo will be from the more fringe elements of the left who do not consider California sufficiently progressive since the right is effectively vanquished in the state.

The Daily Beast is a pretty leftist site in and of itself, so I was surprised the author pinpointed the aspects of liberalism for the states woes.

I still can't understand the use of the word 'progressive' when discussing oppressive and decidedly regressive states. We know the regressive elite are the ones that coined the phrase and believe that the louder you shout and the longer you repeat a lie, the more it's believed.
It's starting to look like the people are starting to believe it too. Common sense has left the building. Interesting article about the republic of California from the regressive side of reason.

Its a one-party state. The Dems have a stranglehold there... but that's me stating the obvious. My parents who still live there used to think that the political climate would change once things got bad enough (taxes, COL or crime). I kept telling them that would never happen, its a welfare state and the freeloaders will keep the Dems in power no matter what... they feed off each other. I now firmly believe (and my parents too) that the only thing that will facilitate change in that state is for the state itself to collapse in bankruptcy or by natural disaster. Having the 7th largest economy in the world collapse is serious unknown territory, and the global repercussions might warrant a bailout by the feds... so whos to say if CA will ever change?

The long-held, media-propagated, and "common wisdom" is that the ultra wealthy are Democrats. Wrong. The ultra wealthy are Progressives. The elite want to control the agenda, and as such, need to control the State. This is not tinfoil hat stuff - even tho' you'll be branded as a loon - if you look at where the money goes during an election.

Good article. Too bad it's a template for the things to come.
