Rimfire Falling Steel Match
Rimfire Falling Steel Match
Today, pretty much on a whim, I grabbed my Ruger 22/45 and headed to Fredrick, MD to shoot a .22 Falling Steel Match at the Monocacy Pistol Club. This is the first time I've shot this match and I found it plenty challenging. The targets are falling steel plates in either a square, circle or diamond shape. They are about 4 inches in size and about 12 to 14 yards distant. There are 9 targets, one of which is designated a stop plate and must be shot last, else you stop shooting as soon as it falls. What makes all the above challenging is that you are limited to 10 rounds, so you can only miss once and of course you are shooting on the clock with a shot timer scoring your run to the nearest 100th of a second. Any normal plates left standing add a 3-second time penalty and if the stop plate is still standing that is an additional 10-second penalty. Try to shoot faster than you can hit and your going to eat some major time penalties - I verified this.
Not surprising to me, most pistols were either Rugers or Browning Buckmarks.
22 rifles can play this game too and there were a few there as well - AR style mainly.
This match is held monthly the second Sunday starting at 10 AM. I recommend it. The match fee is only $5. Here is a link to the club:

Way to far for me to drive but I need to make it out to some more competive shooting. It's been far to long! Have you seen the new steel matches called ProAm? Look it up they look super fun. You just shoot all the steel you can in a given time. Right now it's only in Florida though.

I would love to try my hand at it with my Ruger Mk3 22/45 it sounds fun as all get out but like Jake said that is a bit of a haul (but it might be worth it). Is there anything like it here in Virginia?

@jakeiscrazy, thanks for the ProAm reference - I had not heard of this one. Hope it spreads to our area.
@taggure, I know some VA clubs have done some Ruger Rimfire Challenge matches before, but nothing regular and sometimes the matches were for club members only. Besides, these are static steel targets and not the much more fun falling steel targets. I hope VA clubs will get into rimfire falling steel matches. It's a great way to get more people involved in competition shooting.
Apparently PA is pretty big on rimfire falling steel. Here is a video of what appears to be a super match there that I snagged from another board:

Does look like fun, but I'm wondering where they got all that .22LR ammo.

Jake, come on out to the bowling pin shoot in Louisa this Sat. There'll be a couple of us VGOFers there. $5 a round, bring your own ammo. Sometimes they have ammo for sale at the shoot. PM me your email and I'll send you a pdf with the info.Jakeiscrazy wrote:Way to far for me to drive but I need to make it out to some more competive shooting. It's been far to long! Steel Challenge matches are awesome. I got my son started in the when he was 10. Great way to get the kids involved!!! We both shot the Pro-Am back in Tulsa the last 2 years it was there. We had a blast. The sponsors were great and very supportive of the juniors. Phil Strader runs a great match and is just a great ambassador for our sport.

I used to avoid MD too, but I like to shoot and they have some good match venues in MD that I really enjoy. So, I put my guns and ammo in my car's trunk and drive within the speed limits.Remek wrote:No way am going into the socialist republic of MD if I do not have to.
