Don't like Virginia's CHP process/time?

Post by AlanM »

I just happened to visit the Delaware Concealed Carry forum.

Now, when I applied for my Ohio CHL back in '04 I received my CHL 13 days after applying. No appointments needed, I just walked into the Summit Co. jail and turned in my paperwork, they took one finger print with a scanner and that was it.
Four years later, again no problems walking in and renewing. Received my new CHL 13 days later.

Here, in Virginia, after establishing residency, the paper work was easy, fee nominal, and then the County clerk took the entire 45 days allowed her and probably would have been longer if I hadn't nudged her with a phone call.

If you have ANY complaints about your state's process read this before you fly too far off the handle:
Delaware CCW Process

Oh, bear in mind that Delaware only has three counties and you can pretty much WALK from end to end in one day. (96 miles)

I love this on that site:

"Out of State Resident:
If you are from out of the State of Delaware you have the option of obtaining a Florida or Utah permit, these states are both shall issue states and are less expensive. "

IE: We suck so badly, we need you to go to another state with reciprocity to get your permit.

I guess it depends on where you live in VA. Mine was relatively quick and painless with the CHP in my mailbox about 35 days after paperwork turn-in at the main Police HQ.

We are lucky in Virginia that we can open carry during the waiting time. Try and do that in Delaware.

Luck? seems it's like a people over a long period of time worked to get us where we are. VCDL and the like are very persistent and positive for our great state.

I got mine a year ago and was surprised that it only took 4 weeks in fairfax county. I thought I would have to ride out the entire 45 days.

Bear in mind that I got mine in Albemarle County which is a blue island in a sea of red counties.

I was surprised at getting mine from Fairfax in just 3 weeks and that was within the last month.

I filed in Prince William County. I received a letter after 43 days stating that there was a delay in processing my paperwork and that I could use my receipt and the letter as proof of authorization to carry a concealed handgun. My actual permit arrived the very next day. LOL

I will likely never move to a state that is so unfriendly. The way that was laid out, it looks like it could take up to a year and cost hundreds of dollars. What a PITA.

And I read the Code of Delaware to make sure the post was still valid given current laws.... I would like to go on the record saying " Delaware!" Virginia reciprocity will be revoked by the Delaware state government on December 7, 2013 because our training requirements don't meet or exceed theirs.

The only entertainment in Delaware is going to watch Jill Biden fire a couple of blasts off the back porch with her double barrel shotgun. Other than that, no reason to go there. :hysterical:

Before moving here I lived in NY for 8 years and in San Francisco for one year.

I lived in Brooklyn, Manhattan and in Westchester County. NY State requires a permit to even *own* a handgun. Each county has wide latitude and in Westchester you can pretty much forget it.

In SF I could own a handgun as long as it was on the State's approved list and only holds 10 rounds, but forget getting a CHP/CCW in SF County. Forget that there are huge swaths of that city that become a criminal playground after dark and that the gangbangers routinely shoot it out in suburbs like Richmond. I can't say enough about that Prog cesspool...

Do I LOVE Virginia? You're damned right I do!

I hear you Jim. I was born and raised in Rhode Island. With the exception of a few very, very select people, only the cops and the criminals have guns. I am so glad I am in VA...

Here was my ordeal from about 20 years ago. At the time, I was the only person in my city who was not a policeman who had a concealed weapons permit.

To get my permit I had to...
1.) get a credit and criminal background check.
2.) go through a state authorized trainer and qualify with a minimum score of 250 out of 300 at 25 yards with a weapon at the caliber I was going to carry (only allowed 10 shots to do so).
3.) I had to prove that my life was in more danger than the average person by writing a petition and explanation.

So, I got notarized copies of several cash receipts for $100,000+, copies of counter checks for 10's of thousands of dollars, etc. and in the petition I said that I was a small business owner known to carry large amounts of cash due to my lack of credit. I used two examples of convenient store clerks getting killed for under $40 and said for $100,000 or more, I know they will kill me to get it.

I got a letter of recommendation from the Chief of Police in my town, a police Captain in a neighboring town and from a personal bodyguard of the Mayor of Providence.

Even with all that stuff, my first request was rejected by the AG's office because I was too young, even though I was 21 and meet the states minimum age requirement.

Three months after the first attempt, I put in my second submittable. I finally got my permit after almost a year total. My second packet had all the same stuff as my first packet, plus I got a new letters of recommendation from the chief District Court judge Al DeRobbio and Governor Lincoln Almond‎.

God, what a PITA that was. If it wasn't for the fact that I was extremely well connected, it would have never happened.

VA CHP approval time surely varies from city to city. A guy I work with got his in a little over a week in King George and it was even laminated when he got it. I often miss home(Texas) but this state is great for gun ownership, and I really appreciate it.
