A liberal anti-gunner changes her mind.

Some of the language in this article would not get past the auto censors on this forum.

Get to Know the Americans You'd Least Expect to Fancy the Firearm

Well written, technically correct on gun terms, verifiable stats. Highly unusual for a lefty.

About her first time at the range:
It’s almost four months to the day that I stood alongside my daughter and PETA volunteers, protesting the National Rifle Association’s tacky and ludicrous press conference a week after the Sandy Hook Elementary massacre. That week NRA Vice President Wayne LaPierre poked fingers at video-game violence, lambasted the media, and recommended armed guards in our schools. Just blocks from the White House, he ranted in a hotel ballroom while my baby slept bundled in her snowsuit and stroller with me outside. I held a sign that said, “Teach kindness, not killing.”
She ends the piece with this:
I know that however much it still scares the hell out of me to extend my body into the thrust and trajectory of a bullet, were the threat of harm to come to me or my children, I’d want to stand on this side of the gun—not aiming to kill, never to kill—but to have some force behind which to salvage what I love.

Good article. Hopefully the experience will get her out of her immediate circle, and cause her to hang around some folks that will encourage her to rethink some other beliefs of hers.

From the linked article:
..........................
I joke with Hilliker that confessing to a love of firearms must, for some liberals, feel a lot like coming out—baring some private fact about yourself. He corrects me, “Yeah, except I think if I were coming out, it’s something I would feel more proud of.” Guns have a more negative stigma. “I feel like supporting gun culture isn’t as righteous as supporting gay culture.”
...........................

So, owning a gun is seen by this liberal gun owner as carrying a greater stigma than being gay, huh? A gun in your hand is a greater shame than a #### in your %%%%%? Wow. There sure enough is a vast cultural and moral divide here between me and the liberals - even the liberal gun owners.

On the other hand, in spite of all that, he still wants to own a gun. It's just that he's rather admit to being a fellator than a gun owner. This is making my head hurt.

@Dormin: I am still waking up; I caught all that too, but went on and put it out of my still-fuzzy brain.

My hope is that these gun owning liberals will start wondering how many other lies they've been told.

We can hope. And in the meantime, what must our greeting to the Hillikers of this world be? Something like "Welcome to the brotherhood of gun owners. But please wash your hands and brush your teeth."? :hysterical:

Well written, and pretty thoughtful as well. Seems like she is at least seeing the other side through some of the smoke and mirrors the left has thrown up.

From The article...
“Fairness is an important, critical core value on the left,” Hoeber tells me. “And I think one of the ways that sense of fairness exists on a deeply emotional level is really strong and negative feelings toward bullies.” She sees the anti-gun impulse on the left as an association between guns and bullies. “The gun is the dangerous power of the redneck, the Klansman, and the bad cop, and the unjust military dictatorship.”

Glad they're somewhat seeing the light but find it a little funny that they Hoeber cant include our biggest "gun problem" in the US - So called gansters. Probably afraid of being called a racist. Still a lot of intellectual dishonesty there. Deal with the gangs (and not all are non-white) and the "gun problem" no longer exists.
I still expect these people to support gun control for the scary guns that offend them but want to keep safe what is theirs.

... Don't forget, this person is still awaking from the indoctrination of the left that they experienced all their lives. It will probably be a long time until they have all their thoughts organized and well thought out. For now, I think she is doing a fair job at sorting them out, but she has a long way to go.

Good read, thanks for the link.

Sure, making comments about liberals and those typically associated with liberals might be fun. Don't you think it could offend potential allies to the gun-movement? You don't have to agree on everything, but isn't it better to be inclusive (all gun owners) rather than to exclude someone from the conversation?

I think we will never have a single issue where someone does not exclude another for one reason or another. Just drives me crazy.
