100 best albums of all time

Post by Rich »

Killing time in Target with the wife and I found yet another 100 best albums of all time list. There must have been about 10,463 of these lists over the years and in everyone of them the Beach Boys "Pet Sounds" is always in the top ten. That is one of lifes biggest mysteries to me. I cannot think of a more mediocre band in the world than the Beach Boys. And the only Led Zeppelin album to make the list came in around 79th. I realize these lists are all about personal taste but there are still millions of fans listening to Led Zeppelin and probably about 12 people who ever heard of "Pet Sounds".

One of top five on my list is The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band - Will the Circle Be Unbroken aka "The Circle Album". Aside from that I can't really think of many whole albums I like, mabey Bod Dylan - Blond on Blonde.

It's more of an age thing, those of us old farts who grew up in the 60's have heard and enjoyed the beach boys.

King, B.B. - Greatest Hits

Wow that would be fun to try to come up with a top 100. Seems like a logical gauge would be number of 'hits' per album. Do bands today have knockout albums, where almost every song on it became a hit?

"Back in my day" *hitches up pants, leans on cane* "albums had more substance."

Back in Black
Boston (1 & 2)
Hysteria
Thriller (gag)
Breakfast in America
Appetite for Destruction
Moving Pictures
Dark Side of the Moon
The Wall
Eliminator
Zeppelin IV

etc.

Dunno, Phantom,

Some of the "Best of" albums become instutions in their own right... Like the Eagles "Greatest Hits 1 & 2".

Or Queen's "Classic and Greatest Hits".

They sell more than all the other albums combined, and kids today STILL listen to them.

Pink Floyd- Dark Side of the Moon (never left Billboards top 200 album chart until they changed the tally method (and later changed it back). It would have far more than the 842 weeks on that chart that it currently has.)

The Police- Synchronicity

The Alan Parsons Project- Turn of a Friendly Card.

The Electric Light Orchestra- Out of the Blue

Fleetwood Mac- The Dance (This is worth buying simply for Lindsey Buckingham's performance of "Big Love" is well worth it!)

Haha, I have both of those in my collection, and others like Bee Gees and Abba, truth be told. Styx, Charlie Daniels, etc. particularly for some of the bands that had their hits spread across many albums.

It's all a matter of mood. You can like Goth, and Country, sometimes at the same time (Sometimes the same song if it's Rob Zombie)

But you generally lean to one particular type regularly.

I like things with "one-two" beats... (shrugs) Dunno why.

Holly crap Rev, Poe - Hello I love that album. Every time you put something up. I like your music tastes.

I don't have the faculties or drive to put up my all time favorites right now but great album Rev.

For me music is a journey. It has to have a good bass beat, something to build off of, it has to have some complexity Up beats, (e.g. the beat is on the and, of 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and), it has to tell a story either in words or in instrumental sounds. (I used to be a concert cellist) =) Music is very near and dear to me.
