Anyone else see this as a problem??

Post by VBshooter »

In the further dumbing of America it seems now that actually knowing how to write is under attack from a bunch of modern day jackass educators and other entities of stupidity..http://news.yahoo.com/cursive-writing-d ... 32387.html
Personally I see this as a crippling further dumbing of the population ... Even if we do use a keyboard more and print some. . The damn basics should never be abandoned!!!

Well, the Constitution was written in cursive. If you don't want people reading it...

My wife, an educator at a private Christian school, and I agree with you VBshooter. We both think it should remain a part of the basic curricula for all schools!

That being said, I wasn't sure that I could still write in cursive, so I gave it a shot. Happy to say that I still can, but I do prefer to print.

I don't do it, but I keep thinking that taking the time to write out a letter in cursive every day or two would be a good thing on many levels....

Learned it in 3rd grade (circa 1990 or so?) never used it in real life as no single situation has ever required me to. IMO its effectively obsolete and should not be taught anymore.

I'll be teaching it to my niece starting now, and I shall never write anything in print again! :packin:

 Fully agree that kids should be taught how to write it and read it.

Wow, when I see the "Congratulations to the Class of 2013" sign at the high school I feel old since I graduated high school in 2000. Not sure how thirteen years went by so quickly.

I was born in 1982. My oldest daughter was born in 2007 and its really strange she will never know life pre-Internet. The kid is six and uses Youtube and Google like a natural.

This is sarcasm, right? So, every kid that ever had guitar/piano/violin lessons, that never used it after the lessons were over should not have been taught? The art of cursive handwriting is right up there with them for me.

Consider how the arts contribute to the development of the mind (neural pruning), the thought processes and patterns, the hand - eye coordination, etc. Don't let your daughter's brain die 18" from a google search box.

Asian mother, so I learned cursive around kindergarten age. By the time I was in secon grade, my penmanship had suffered to the point my teachers asked me to print. By fourth grade, it was so bad, they asked me to type.

Problem was that I was a prolific writer back then, and I was alway in a hurry to get words on paper. I think I've just gotten stupid over the years.

(I was in fourth grade in 1979-1980.)

No, it doesn't. I was in the third grade in 1955. Attending a US military dependents school in London, England. :wheelchair:

I was an E3 in the USN in 1965.

I saw my first problem with the digital age when my oldest daughter (who was born in 1972), when she was about 10, asked me, "Which way is clock-wise?"
I then realized that there was NOT ONE analog clock in the house!
That changed almost immediately.

I know for sure that she knows CW from CCW now. She does all her own repairs on her Jeeps.

Neither of my wives can/could grasp the concept of righty tighty, lefty loosy.
And before you ask, one at a time, not at the same time.

You and I are the same age, and you can't sit there and tell me you've never written or endorsed a check? They require a siqnature which is always in cursive.

There are a lot of things that should be obsolete but cursive writting is not one of them. It's like a good guitar or a fine wine, it's classic and never outdated!

GF says, "a well refined person should know how to write in cursive."

I hate writing in cursive, but they should still teach it. They should still demand handwritten reports, in cursive, black ink, no white-out.

Also, computers should not be used in schools. Damn kids are getting too lazy.
