Proactive Shooters' Defensive Handgun I class - 6/23/13

Proactive Shooters' next Defensive Handgun I class will be held on Saturday, June 23, 2013 from 9am to 5pm.

The goal of this course is to teach the student the beginning movements and techniques needed to properly deploy their handgun in a defensive situation.

The cost for the class is $150.00. Class runs approximately 8 hours and students will need 300 rounds of ammunition for this course (students may bring more)


Topics include:

- Introductions / Safety Briefing

- Holster draw and presentation techniques for open carry and concealed carry draws

- Proper magazine changes

- Semi-auto malfunction resolutions

- Live fire evaluation of student’s shooting fundamentals

- Target recognition exercise

- Two hand, one hand, and opposite hand shooting techniques

- Linear & lateral movement

- Distance shooting from retention distance to 25 yards

- Shooting from kneeling and "urban prone" positions

2) Due to the numerous training incidents around the country involving Serpa Blackhawk holsters (with the push button release), we have established a policy that these holsters will no longer be allowed in our live fire classes.

Can you go into a little more detail about this and what you'd recommend instead? From what I understood, those were highly recommended for OC.

300 rounds is not that hard now. Walmart has been steadily getting ammo in. I just picked up 600 rounds of .40 myself.

As far as the Serpa, the problem is really not the holster itself (not too much anyway). The problem is that the holster requires immaculate trigger finger discipline. Most people generally don't have that, especially while under stress. Its too easy to curl the finger and still disengage the button. Also, different guns have different thicknesses of trigger guards and that is what the lock engages.

Numerous instructors have had issues and have banned them, as well as places like the FLETC academy. Its just a risk that we don't want students to take. Safety first! Anything else that doesn't use the same type of system should be fine.
