gas block

Post by cwfunrider »

I am going to be removing my front site and am looking for a gas block to replace it. I would like one with a rail on the top to mount a flip up sight but i want it to work with the Magpul fore grip i have.

I have searched the interwebs and read many a review. So good some not. Most of the ones with the rail have mixed reviews. Some have complained that their rifle would not cycle properly after installation.

I figured I'd pick the know hows on here for more reviews.

The best places to find the Info you seek is: http://m4carbine.net/ or http://www.ar15.com/. I will offer you the simple advice that both sites aren't very friendly to newbies who come on there and post the same question as 72 newbies before them. Use the search feature and I am sure you will find someone will have already asked the question before.

That said, I would discourage replacing the front sight base with a gas block. most original manufacturers use tapered pins to secure the front sight base and you have to know which direction to drive them out. Most of the gas blocks I have seen use either set screws or clamping bolts to secure them, neither of which hold as well as the pin setup. If you are going to use a scope with more than 3X with it, you won't even see the front sight base. If you are running an Aimpoint or Eotech, they are in you field of view, but really not that distracting.

As for mounting your Magpul foregrip, I don't know what type you have, they usually attach to a piece if "Picatinny" rail or a Magpul MOE handguard. A lot of folks love hanging a lot of rails on their rifle, if you don't have a need for them I recommend against it. There are a lot of handguards out there that are modular now, the MOE being one of them. They allow adding a few pieces rail as needed, instead of 4 rails that cover top, bottom, leaf and right of the handguards that then get covers added.
You just have to ask yourself, is he telling you the truth based on knowledge and experience or spreading internet myths?

Do you plan to replace the FSB with a GB yourself? Or do you plan to bring it to a local gunsmith/shop?
This is all very general as I don't know what you intend to do with this rifle -
There are several gas blocks out there with a top rail, my suggestion if you do plan to go this route would be to use a steel gas block, not aluminum, and consider using a free float forearm.
As stated by grumpyMSG above, there really is not alot of gain in switching from a FSB to a gas block only and keeping the standard 2 pc handguard. With a 3X9-40 scope you won't even see the front sight when looking through the scope.
As far as sights go, you will be limited to steel or aluminum front sights with a gas block mount (heat transfer from the gas block would melt a magpul MBUS sight eventually). It is far more flexible to use a free float handguard with a top rail, and use whatever same plane sights you want to...

hint: Use the "site:" tag in google to specify which site to search for info and reviews on the 2 sites listed above

I guess I'll try and leave it and see what the sight picture looks like. I am putting a 3x32 Nikon scope on it and do not want to see the front sight obscure it. The rings to mount the scope just came today so I'll know what it will look like soon.

Good to go. Front sight is not in the scopes view. Nevermind.
