Couple of New Gun Laws in Texas Today

Couple of interesting gun laws go into effect today in Texas.

-- Concealed handgun license holders will no longer face license suspension for refusing to display it to peace officers on demand.

-- Carrying a concealed handgun into a bar will still be a Class A misdemeanor, but it's defensible if the business does not clearly state that 51 percent or more of its income is from the sale of alcoholic beverages.

Not sure what I think about the first one. To me its like showing your DL. I could understand if you were not carrying and an LEO asked to see it, but otherwise not sure I agree. Anyway, just found these interesting.

For the first one, they will certainly face some other punitive action, just not suspension of their permit.

The second one? OH NO! It's the BAR LOOPHOLE! lol

The way the law was stated, in my words, was that when asked for a drivers license, if carrying concealed, the permit had to be produced. That could/would lead to discretionary seizure...

I don't know if it has been covered before, but would you produce your permit any time your drivers license was requested? I was told in CHP class that police would appreciate that courtesy.

In VA its not required nor are you required to inform you are carrying unless asked. I think most of us do it as courtesy since the DMV record supposedly reflects you are a CHP holder. So when they run the check on your license they already know and will probably ask.

Thanks, that was my understanding. I went through a seatbelt check the other day and decided against showing the permit. Had it been a traffic stop, I would have shown it.

Btw, laws on this vary from state to state so if you CC in another state check their laws. Some do require that you immediately notify the LEO you are carrying even if stopped on the sidewalk.
