Book, Website, etc Reviews
Wondering if anyone else thinks a topic for content reviews would be a good idea. Many of us read books, magazines, web sites, and watch TV programs relating to defense, firearms, hunting, fishing, etc. Might be nice to share reviews so others can benefit from your research and efforts.
If so, would you suggest a review topic with sub-topics (books, magazines, web sites, etc) or just one topic for reviews in general?
Just a thought to see if others are interested.

I don't know about magazine reviews, I mean would you review an issue or a mag in general. For instance I kike "Combat Handun" over "Guns & Ammo" because it has more articles about self defense. Now this can varry from month to month.

Well, you essentially just posted a review and something I or perhaps others didnt know. Just throwing the idea out for discussion to see what everyone thinks.
I would like to see one for book and web site reviews as many of us no doubt use those heavily for reference.

I found "The Gun Digest Book of Concealed Carry" by Massad Ayoob a pretty good read - made me think about some things I hadn't considered. I know some folks don't like Ayoob, but I can still learn something from people I don't always agree with, and the more info you have, the better decisions you make...

Well, guess I'll follow suit. If Rick decides its a good idea, we can get things organized later.
Bill recommended a couple of books and authors. I picked up a copy of Jeff Cooper's Principles of Personal Defense.
When I ordered this book I was obviously expecting to read about shooting techniques...NOT...but please read on. Mr Cooper provides wisdom on the criminal mind, our victim mentality, and mental preparation. The focus of his writing is how to prepare mentally for a confrontation. He does make the point that his principles should and must be used once there is no other recourse. I wont spoil the read and list any - maybe you already know some or all, but this is an excellent reference - even if you dont carry or own a gun. I picked it up, started reading, and finished less than an hour later. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED FOR ANYONE THAT DOES NOT WANT TO BE A VICTIM. I will read this again and again and I will also list his 7 principles on a 3x5 card which will stay in my pocket until they are ingrained.

Do you think this book would be available in a public library?

I ordered it from Amazon. I doubt a public library would have it. You could always ask them to order it for you.

I just bought a special issue magazine from the tractor supply in Marshall put out by Guns&Ammo called the Complete Book of Rimfires. It's got some fantastic articles/reviews: "Top 10 .22 Rifles", "Shoot .22 Ammo in your AR or HK", etc... Plus tons of SQUIRREL hunting references! LOL

Re: Book, Website, etc Reviews
Here's another book review on one I picked up based on a recommendation from SgtBill.
"No Second Place Winner" - Bill Jordan
This book was originally printed in 1965, but dont let that throw you. Its full of wisdom and nuggets of information based on Mr Jordan's 30 year career in law enforcement and is applicable to anyone who carries for defense. Mr Jordan discusses holsters, grips, drawing, shooting, pistols, calibers, and combat shooting. Btw, if you carry a revolver this is a great book for you, however, most sections are also informative and applicable to those of us favoring auto loaders. He also sprinkles his thoughts concerning shooting ethics and mental preparation throughout the book. The only problem I have is with Mr Jordan's discussion of using wax bullets for practice - simply because you cant do that with an auto loader the same way you can with a revolver. Highly recommended.

Re: Book, Website, etc Reviews
I have two to add...
a. "The Virginia Gun Owner's Guide" (Korwin/Maniscalco - 2009 edition)
b. "The AR-15" V.'s - 1 & 2 (Sweeney)
Just started on VGOG - already dog-earing it.
The AR-15 books were the result of information folks posted here on uppers/lowers, etc., (to include the many PM's sent). There was recently posts on how to build and also the animated post - all good stuff for a reference library.
... if I can add a personal choice - "The Art of War" (Sun Tzu) - not "gun-related" but related on how we use ourselves and toolls as weapons in prepartion for whatever....

I would definatley suggest Sun Tzu's "The Art of War". That is a timeless work that is applicable not just to war, but to all of life. Corporate execs in Japan and other Asain countries are know to keep this book on them at all times as a referance guide and they use it's teachings to gain the upper hands in all the things they do.
