Howdy,
I have a Mosin Nagant 91/30 with hex receiver. It is not a sniper version but I'd very much like to mount a scope with a minimal amount of "damage" to the rifle. What would be wrong with me drilling two holes in the same location as the sniper ones and converting the bolt to a bent handle? I'm not looking to pass this off as a true sniper and have no plans on selling it. I'll be using a modern scope and assume the biggest deal would be cutting some sort of bracket. Thoughts?

Don't drill your rifle if you don't have to. Look into the JMECK scope mount (google is your friend). Get yourself a bent bolt body from Rocky Mountain Industries, too. I have a 10-40x50 optic on my 91/30, and with modern ammo, you can drill 5 shots through a nickle-sized hole at 100 yards if your rifle's barrel and bore are in good shape!
Of course, between the Mosin, the bolt, the mount, scope rings, a scope, and some modern ammo, you may as well buy yourself a Ruger American Rifle or used Remington 700. That said, I chose to restore a beat-to-hell 91/30 into something that looks good, and shoots as good as a modern rifle.

And for emphasis on what a tuned-up, scoped 91/30 can do:

I like that, thanks! As stated I'd rather do as little to the rifle as possible. Yep a Savage is in the game plan down the road. The nagant was in my budget and fills a nice nich. Being able to test it's limits will be a blast!

The main reason to fix up an old 91/30 is that the ammo is cheaper than 9mm. Buy lots and lots of the surplus stuff while it lasts! I buy two tins every time I restock (once a year) - 440 rounds for shooting, 440 rounds for shooting LATER.
$160+ shipping for 880 rounds here: http://www.dansammo.com/ammo.asp - beats the hell out of .30-06 prices, and with a little work to your barrel, about as accurate to 400 yards with modern ammo.
Happy shooting!
