45/70 Govt. Does anyone else shoot this ?

Post by Snakester »

I have been looking at the Henry H010 45/70 for several months now . I finally got to see one today that my Gun Dealer buddy got in from Henry this morning. What a great Gun , very smooth action and the Craftsmanship was perfect as usual from Henry. If it wasn't Sold , I would have bought it right then. His buyer picked it up this afternoon . They called me knowing that I have a place we can shoot this Cannon . WOW Now I really want one ! We made 1 small adjustment and was nailing our target at 200 yds. They only had about 30 rds. to shoot and I had 2-20 rd. bxs. that I bought at a gun show in Oct. because the price was right and I knew I will have a gun to shoot it 1 day. I really have no need for a 45/70 , but that has not stopped me yet. Is anyone else shooting this ? :BFG:

My grandfather had an old Springfield Trapdoor. Technically, it is my brothers, but practically, it is mine. Very long, very heavy, very accurate. I was always tempted to take it to Camp Perry and see what I could do against those guys shooting modern guns.

I also have a Browning Lever action. It is a beautiful gun. Great shooter. I took a deer in WV with it several years back. It made a nice round hole that you could eat right up to.

I suggest reloading for the 45-70. For a powder puff load, use trailboss and try a nice 400gr hard case bullet. You will want a factory crimp die. For the hotter stuff there are several loads. My pain threshhold happened before I found the limit in the Browning. I also got a 458WM about that same time (so much easier on my body and much higher velocity level) So I never tried to see the limit of the 45-70.

I may be one of the crazy ones, as I shoot this from my Thompson G2 Contender, and it's a handful. A lot of fun, still very accurate in a 14" barrel, but a bruiser even with the factory muzzle brake.

I've had my eye on a Marlins model 1895 45/70 lever action for a while. With the new Model 1895GBL 6 round tubular mag vice 4)I may have to make the jump soon..... No reason to get one other than years ago I used to hunt with an uncle with one of these and loved it. No longer hunt, but still love the gun. Enough reason for me.....

I really have no reason at all to purchase a 45/70 other than just wanting one ! After shooting the Henry yesterday , I know I will order one soon. I also have looked at the Marlin SS 1895...Very Nice , but I will probably go with the Henry.

An outstanding cartridge. When I hear 45/70 my first thought is Marlin 1895.

sort of...

picked up a rossi 92, in 454 Casull. Just about duplicates 45-70 ballistics, but with shorter cartridges, so it holds more =).

If I really have big stuff to go after, thats what I've got the 458 lott for.
