Reticles -

Post by widefat »

What reticle do you favor for mid-long distance shooting?
I would like to learn how to shoot up to 1000 yards; I really dont have much experience beyond 200-250 yards.
I am exploring optics and find my jaw hanging open at the number of reticle choices. I am not opposed to the latest and greatest (Horace?), but I also like the simplicity of a simple mildot. I figure if I can learn to use a simple mildot or MOA reticle correctly, then I have learned some very solid distance shooting fundamentals.
And that brings another question - MOA or MIL?

So what do you use, and why?

PS - my platform is a 308 with a 20MOA base.

first and formost, get a scope that has matching reticle and knobs... i.e. mil/mil or moa/moa

I prefer a straight up mildot reticle. Like http://nightforceoptics.com/reticles/MILDOT/

mil. I prefer metric system, I like a decimal system.

it make the add/subtract/adjust much easier.

308@1000 is tough... you really need to stay super sonic which means lighter bullet than you might want to use, and much less common in factory ammo.

I agree mil is the way to go. .308 @ 1000yds is possible, and I have rounds that will do that constantly. They are personally made and some were made by a now deceased state police sniper/shooter. Good luck.

This is one of the things I like about VGOF, you can learn things. Up till now if someone had mentioned Reticles to me I would have had a deer in headlights stare! :hysterical:

just be careful with spell checkers, or you can change the meaning of the word quite a bit :hysterical:

if budget is limited, start with a fixed 10x.

Way cheaper than any variable, and fine for on the range use.
