Jindal: End 'dumbed-down conservatism'

Post by Kreutz »

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1112/83743.html
Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal on Monday called on Republicans to “stop being the stupid party” and make a concerted effort to reach a broader swath of voters with an inclusive economic message that pre-empts efforts to caricature the GOP as the party of the rich.In his first interview since his party’s electoral thumping last week, Jindal urged Republicans to both reject anti-intellectualism and embrace a populist-tinged reform approach that he said would mitigate what exit polls show was one of President Barack Obama’s most effective lines of attack against Mitt Romney.

We’ve got to make sure that we are not the party of big business, big banks, big Wall Street bailouts, big corporate loopholes, big anything,” Jindal told POLITICO in a 45-minute telephone interview. “We cannot be, we must not be, the party that simply protects the rich so they get to keep their toys.” He was just as blunt on how the GOP should speak to voters, criticizing his party for offending and speaking down to much of the electorate.

“It is no secret we had a number of Republicans damage our brand this year with offensive, bizarre comments — enough of that,” Jindal said. “It’s not going to be the last time anyone says something stupid within our party, but it can’t be tolerated within our party. We’ve also had enough of this dumbed-down conservatism. We need to stop being simplistic, we need to trust the intelligence of the American people and we need to stop insulting the intelligence of the voters.”

Discuss.

He'll most likely lose next primary to someone who claims to be more conservative for saying those things.

The GOP should have dumped folks like Akins immediately. Sticking with him was an idiot move that ended up costing them a seat. If, instead, the GOP has said, "Whoa, we're the law and justice party and there's no such thing as legitimate rape, you idiot" they might have attracted women voters instead of pissing them off.

I'll agreed with MindFlayer on this one...

I cannot stand the "Standard" GOP... I was a member of the local one for about two years to see if it could be changed from the inside to a more Libertarian lean.

Yeah, no. It's a well-oiled machine that doesn't cotton to folks messin' it up.

If they were to go back to the SOCIAL FREEDOMS, and CONSERVATIVE ECONOMICS... They would win every time.

Gay Marriage, Abortion, and Marijuana are personal choices between an individual, and their chosen Diety. Why is guv'mint involved with this other than taxes, and make sure things are regulated for safety.

I couldn't care any less who schtoops who, marries who, or your decision to smoke up, end a pregnancy, or diddle yourself watching Warner Bro's cartoons cover in chocolate sauce...

As long as I ain't gotta pay for the cable, the chocolate sauce, the abortion, the wedding, or the hotel room? HAVE AT IT!

OK, Rev. None of that really bothers me any except for the abortion piece. Our libertarian drawers are showing under our conservative petticoats, I guess.
My conviction is that life does begin at conception. That said, the reason I detest Roe v. Wade is that it is one of those “wink-wink-nod-nod” deals where liberals erected a fairy tale that ignores law and tradition in our society to get the result they wanted. It has always been a crime, as a rule, in our part of human society to shorten a human life. Our society has recognized exceptions to this rule. Kings (when we had them) sometimes held the power of life and death over subjects. But in more enlightened times, these exceptions have been limited pretty much to self-defense, capital punishment, and war. I read in the paper recently that a drunk driver had been charged with two homicides for causing the death of a pregnant woman. If our society would have a public debate and then by a fair and open vote of the legislatures of each state pass laws that codified Roe v. Wade, then I think it would be as defensible as self-defense as an exception to the rule that shortening a human life is homicide and a crime (even though I would personally never elect to abort a fetus unless to save the life of the mother). But as things presently stand, implementing Roe v. Wade through judicial legislation is just plain dishonesty, hypocrisy and cheating.

Heck, Reverenddel, based on that last post, I'd say you and I have more in common than I thought.

I can agree with most things, but I'm not a SUPPORTER of ALL things...

Do I like it? Nah. Do I think a girl under the age of 18 should get one without some parental consent? Nope (Can't go to the doctor, or get medication by yourself, EXCEPT FOR THIS PROCEDURE). After that? That's between the Female, the sperm donor, Jesus, and the NP, or Doc.

Abortion only affects me if I had to pee on a stick in a bathroom, praying the "minus" sign comes up... Before we had medical abortions, there were herbal remedies that did the same thing... So It's a moot point.

And yes 'Flayer... Hershey's Chocolate sauce would have made that Honeymoon juuuusssttt a bit better. :hysterical:

Well, now that Gov. Jindal has complained that the intellectual bar is too low, the onus is on him to demonstrate how to raise it. The quoted speech is not an encouraging example.

So as we cheapen our defense of innocent human life to "not my table", how far the libertarians here willing to take it. When does it become not ok to kill a child? Why stop at birth, why not at two, why not at 18? If you saw a mom hitting her toddler over the head with a bat would you attempt to stop her?

You either believe it wrong to kill people and life should be defended or you don't.

To be clear it not between a woman and her doctor, there is another person in the mix. The child who has a heartbeat, it's own DNA, arms legs and often early brain activity. The child has no voice to plead for its life. If you don't think we should defend them don't be surprised when you or someone you love is dependent on artificial care and the powers that be do not find you valuable.

You can roll with the slippery slope arguments all you want, but libertarians aren't talking about killing 2 year olds or 18 year olds. They're talking about the woman's right to choose up to the point of viability (typically 24 weeks) as established in Roe v Wade. What I like about libertarians is that every adult can make their own choices based on their beliefs, the way it should be. My wife and I may not feel abortion would be best for us, but who are we to say someone else can't have one? With personal choice everyone is able to follow their own beliefs and not have to worry about someone else forcing their beliefs on them.

Oh, and if I saw someone beating on a kid I'd try to do something to intervene.

If one believes that a child in the womb is alive then one has every moral imperative to defend that life. It really does not matter to me if someone doesnt think the baby is alive or not. It is. I won't stand by and allow other people to look the other way while children are killed.

I can kind of understand why those who don't believe the baby is alive or mistakenly think that it is just a tumor are ok with "ending the pregnancy." I can obviously identify with those who are truely prolife. What I don't understand is when people personally believe that the baby is alive, but are ok with the child's murder as long as it is not their child.

And yes in Eupope they are flirting with the ideas of "fourth trimester abortions", so the slippery slope argument is entirely valid when it is actually happening.

I fear God and I will not be party to these little children's murder even in silence.

Well the only reason I even jumped in was because you were knocking on libertarians (presumably in the US) as if they are the cause of this downward spiral. That is simply not the case. These are people who tend not to subscribe to abortion policies other than those laid out in Roe v Wade (and some like Ron Paul are even pro-life). But if you're a staunch pro-life person I can see how you will just lump everyone who is not as pro-life in together.

Abortion policies are going to differ from country to country, and each country's citizens will have to make their own decision on what they'll accept. Some countries might accept a 4th term abortion (like in Canada where a new mother received probation for strangling her newborn with a pair of underwear and dumping it out the window). On the other end of the spectrum is Ireland's ban of all abortion except for when the mother's life is in danger. Unfortunately this stance makes doctors so nervous about performing abortions at all because how do you know if the mother's life is in "enough" danger to warrent the abortion? Last week a prominent 31-year old dentist in Ireland was told that they were going to miscarry their 17-week old fetus. Despite her rising pain, doctors would not perform the abortion because the fetus still had a heartbeat. The fetus died as projected and was surgically removed, but the mother died three days later from blood poisoning. So that's also where your moral imperative to defend life can get you.

To quote Edmund Burke on Libertarians and the downward spiral of the value of human life. "All it takes for Evil to prevail is for good people to do nothing." So people who know that children are children from the womb say nothing and another holocaust happens (I don't know what else to call millions of children murdered).

As for the situation in Ireland....that was incompetence on the MD's part. I am pro-LIFE, that means for mother and child. When one can no longer save the child one must do all to save the mother. It was absolutely wrong on so many levels for the doctors to sit on their hands and do nothing to save the mother when they could have. They were entirely within the law and they should have known that. Malpractice killed that poor woman, not a pro-life state.

As it happens I have a very good friend that had the very same thing happen to her. Her water broke, the baby became septic. The doctors did not have to do anything dramtic (tearing the baby to pieces), they simply allowed labor to start and augmented it slightly. Her little son chase was born and took his first and last breaths in her arms (18 weeks gestation). They were able to hold him (he was perfectly formed, just tiny), see him, grieve his passing, and bury him. His life and her life were both respected and when the doctors could not save him, they did all to save her.

Do as you feel you must. But to know something is evil and to not at minimum call it that, is wrong. To know that children are being killed and to not stand up say STOP with every fiber of your being.....I don't know how a person does that. It is no favor to the women who abort because many will live with guilt for the rest of their lives, most later say they wish they had not done it. It is certainly no favor the the child. So I am not sure who libertarians (the people that say not my table), think they are helping in their silence.

Hmmm.... Discussing abortion rights on a gun rights forum where things have been a bit heated lately. No way this could get volatile.

Good move 'Flayer...

We have enough arguments on this forum that we could be our own "NEWS CHANNEL"!

I think it's funny that people forget that in the 80's, and 90's. You had less bias in channels like CNN with "Firing Line" with Pat Buchannan and Michael Kinsley... There have ALWAYS been arguments on beliefs, and opinions.

The difference is, if you can walk away with the phrase, "SCREW IT! Let's get a beer."

Where do you draw the line?

Ideally and personally...conception....however as the pill does not simply prevent conception but also prevents an embryo from implantation and I don't think it is likely to be able to convince people to use barrier methods instead when conception is not desirable....I think realistically for most people to visualize and understand the child as a a distinct, separate and unique person implantation.

Now short of a great awakening and a revival in this country of a love of children and a love of life. I don't see this as likely. What I think would be best at this point would be to return the decision to the states and the people and to have a real discussion on the roots of abortion and the desires of the founders of planned parenthood. Then those states that are ok with Sanger's ideas on the destruction of certain "lesser" races can permit abortion (though they should hang their heads in shame at what they stand for). I would still decry it as evil and immoral, but an evil which was chosen by the people of that state not permitted by federal fiat. At that point I think we should do in those states what we do nationally now and plead with the mothers not to murder their children.

abortion was not brought up by me...it was brought up several posts above. I just offered some pushback on the "not my table" mentality.

Indeed. Not sure how this even got there.

I will say abortion is the "crucible" issue for libertarian types....its defninitely a divisive one. I do think pro-life libertarians are in the minority, I could be wrong though.

The issue seems clear cut to me, but others disagree. Such is life.

Just wondering why they want bodies so bad?
