Strange Call at Work

I work at the local Mcdonalds and today i got a strange call. A women called up simply wanted to know if "Everything was ok up there?"

I was puzzled by the question and told her that yes everything was fine, "Why do you ask?"

She said she just went thru the drive thru and just saw some suspicious people outside. We had a couple people open carrying in the store at the time and so I figured this may have been where this was coming from so I pressed her for a description.

"She they were a group of white boys."(I guess two people are suddenly a group if they have guns...)

and at that point I finished comment and said "and they were carrying guns"

And she said "Yes!"

I replied "Well ma'am that perfectly legal in this state."

And she said "I know they just seemed kinda suspicious. Why would anyone carry a gun?"

And I told her "Well if they had malice intent would they care about complying with the law and would they open carry their guns or would they conceal them? They have been in our story about 20mins now and are peacefully enjoying their food causing no trouble."

She said "Well I just wanted to check cause it seemed awfully strange."

And I decided I had probably already said to much considering Mcd's has no corporate policy on the matter and I was representing the restaurant as an employee. I thanked her for her concern and told her to have a good night.

So how about that? People open carrying and of all nights one I work and I take the call about them!

SN: I did go out and to the lobby and told the OCers the story which they enjoyed hearing and we talked guns for a few mins before I had to get back to work.

Guns just freak some people out. I admit I am getting old...but when I was a kid growing up in rural Va. nobody batted an eye at someone carrying a gun. And I could not name a household that didnt own guns. Was just part of the culture. Cant say for sure when that changed but change it did.

Even now? I don't blink if someone is carrying a weapon. Funny thing? I usually think "OpenCarry.Org", or "VCDL" before "LEO". HAHAH

I've never been one to bat an eye, either. I just always assumed that everyone had guns, whether I saw any, or not. It wasn't until I was in my 20's that I realized that there were non-felons that actually CHOSE not to own guns, and that were even afraid of them. I still can't wrap my head around that silliness.

In and around North Atlanta, it was not uncommon for many people to be very pro-gun... except when it came to the topic of concealed carry. I remember several soccer moms getting very uncomfortable when finding out that I had a carry permit and hadn't been without one since I turned 21. Apparently many of them thought guns were for decorating walls or the "extreme" hunters.

Of course, their husbands would very quietly come up to me afterwards and ask "what kind of gun do you carry? I've been thinking about..."

Count yourself fortunate. I grew up being taught, and thus believing, that silliness. Took till well into adulthood to "recover" from it, but it is possible. If I see an OC'er, I've got a much higher level of assurance that that individual's a law-abider, because as others have said, the BG's don't OC.

It'd be great to take an one of those loooong-barrel milsurps to the VCDL rally at "Lobby Day", wouldn't it? You know, for that old-school "patriot" look?

+1 Living half my life in wonderful gun-loving New York state my parents never said a peep about guns. My grandfather and uncle would go deer hunting in the winter but I never went with them so I never had an interest in them. Moved to VA in my teens and never took an interest in hunting like the other kids did (and was surprised they taught a gun safety class in the shop class I was taking). I never felt like guns were bad (my parents don't like them). Never touched a gun until earlier this year now have a few purchases under my belt (and hopefully one more during the holiday sales). Better late than never!

So each manager or owner can create his own policy as long as it is within the confines of their state's laws?

Honestly I have no idea. I have never been told of any policy and I asked at one point. It's not in any of the reading material. That's all I know.

I always look at people open carrying...just like I always look at what other people ordered in the restaurant...then I always wonder if I should have got what they got!
