First online gun purchase.
First online gun purchase.
I am looking to make my first internet gun purchase , I have a idea what is involved but I figured I would ask any way. I know that I need to get the FFL number from the local FFL and send it to the company I am going to making a purchase from, Is there any thing else I should be aware of? The gun I plan on buying in a Mosin Nagant revolver, I have looked around the LGS and cannot find one in stock anywhere so I'm kinda being forced to buy online. Thanks for the help guys .
Re: First online gun purchase.
Just be sure that you and the local FFL have the same idea of what's expected of them and how much you are to pay for it. I bought a "new in box", never fired, collectable and had it shipped to a local FFL. When I went to pick it up it had not only been fired, it hadn't even been cleaned after firing. The seller said that it was not in that condition when shipped and, of course, the FFL said that they hadn't fired it. I was left holding the bag. The other thing to be aware of is that, contrary to what the antis have to say, you still have to go through the background check and all, just like you were buying from the FFL.

First, select the local dealer that will be receiving the gun and use their address as the "Ship to" address when you order the gun. Then call the local dealer and ask them what they need from you. You also should inquire about how much the local dealer charges for a transfer since prices vary from $15 to $50.
Most dealers will want you to stop by and fill out a form with information about the purchase. Make sure you have the online seller's name and address as well as the details about the gun you've purchased. The gun's serial number is usually not required at this time.
You will also need the online seller's fax number so the local dealer can send them a copy of their current FFL. It's not a bad idea to ask the online seller if they already have a copy on file since someone else might have used the local dealer previously.
Once the local dealer has faxed their FFL to the online seller, the transaction can be completed. Now all there is left to do is wait for the gun to ship to the local dealer. The local dealer will then contact you so you can stop by and fill out the usual forms and such.
That's all there is to it.

Re: First online gun purchase.
Recommend finding an FFL on gunbroker.com with a reasonable transfer fee, and CALL THEM BEFORE YOU BUY. They will quote you a price and guide you how to proceed using their services.

I'd just like to add that, if possible, you drop by your chosen FFL in person and get to know them. They're not some elite form of life, they're just people. Like other people they come in all grades and sizes. Remember that you're dealing with a person that is in business to make a living, and what may be a one time thing for you is a business transaction to them. Would you make a business deal that you knew involved risks and liabilities on your part without a profit outlook?
