Former ODU wrestler charged with concealing gun

Te Edwards, a former nationally ranked wrestler at Old Dominion University, was charged with carrying a concealed weapon after a traffic stop Saturday at a shopping center near campus.

The charge is a misdemeanor. Edwards, 21, of the 4700 block of Mayflower Road, also was charged with having an open container of alcohol, police said. Officers wrote him a summons for each charge.

According to a police report, Norfolk officers were on foot near the 7-Eleven at 4720 Hampton Blvd. when they saw a Honda Civic go by with alcohol on the floor in the back.

Officers approached the car about 2:10 a.m. and asked the occupants if they had any alcohol, drugs or firearms.

Edwards, a passenger, said he had a loaded handgun in the glove box, according to the report, but did not have a concealed weapon permit.

Police took a 9 mm Sig Sauer handgun and ammunition. Two other people in the car were not charged, police said.

Won't be the first time that Norfolk gets their asses handed to them in court over a false arrest.
You would think they would have brushed up on gun laws after the whole Chet Szymecki and Danladi Moore incidents...

If he was the passenger, as the article states, why was he the one charged with the alcohol violation. I also wonder why the car was stopped to begin with. Surely, the officers were unable to see anything on the floor in the back of a Honda Civic as it drove by.

If all is as reported, the officers did nothing right, including stopping the car to begin with.

I remember a fellow got charged a while back with a concealed handgun being in a unlocked glove box. Does anyone remeber the outcome of that case? I know the AG put out a statement saying the container did not have to be locked.

I just have to wonder what kind of magistrate accepted "Plain View" for the PC in this situation. Like an above poster said, there's virtually no way the officers could have seen anything on the floor of a car driving by them at 2:10am.

I call BS. Shouldn't have been a stop to begin with.
