Police Officers cannot focus on the prevention of any violent crimes when the local gov has them hiding their parked patrol vehicle behind bushes waiting to catch somebody driving past em 7mph over the speed limit. Only an increased visibilty (not behind bushes)of the police officers and marked cars will deter violent crimes. When the cities and counties stop using their police officers as invisible mobile toll booths and instead let them focus on being as visible as possible to deter violent crimes then the public will appreciate them more.
I work all over VA and whether I'm in Henrico, Richmond, Chesterfield, Petersburg, Colonial Heights, Hanover, etc etc. Patrol cars seem to almost always be "hiding" trying to not be seen so a speeder doesn't slow down before hitting a speed trap. A hidden patrol vehicle does nothing to deter a violent crime in an area all it does is help the blue lighted mobile toll booth to remain invisible.
I don't blame the patrol officers though they are just doing what they are told to do by the local gov.
People really think though that current police procedures will protect them from robbery, rape, murder etc etc,, shhh no owning, training with and carrying guns will protect them
This is why Police Officers don't deter violent crime

Police aren't here for your protection. They're here to generate revenue.

They're there to safeguard the peace and dignity of the state.

Let Me start by saying I am Very Pro-police.God bless them, they run into what we run from. Having said that, They cannot be everywhere all the time . Common sense will tell you that their job is to investigate crime not necessarily prevent it. If they happen to be in the right place at the right time they can even prevent it. Case in point. I have a friend who was threatened by an individual over the phone, the threat was a death threat. He called the police and told them the story, they asked if anyone heard the threat,He said no it was over the phone. My friend then asked them,"what are you going to do about it". They told him they weren't going to do anything. There was no crime if no one else heard it and then asked if he had a gun to protect himself. They told him its not their job to provide protection for him, call back if the guy does something. He told them that if he calls back it will be to bring a body bag to pick up the garbage. They said,we can't do anything until there is a crime. So,what we learn from this is,take responsibility for your protection and the protection of those close to you, call us when someone has been killed or injured. Oh yeah,it will be too late then.BHG1978 wrote:Police Officers cannot focus on the prevention of any violent crimes when the local gov has them hiding their parked patrol vehicle behind bushes waiting to catch somebody driving past em 7mph over the speed limit. Police have no duty to prevent crime. This has been upheld in numerous court cases IIRC.

Once more? If you do defend yourself, you're treated as a CRIMINAL, even when it's APPARENT that you were defending yourself.
That alone makes you question years of being told "The police are your friends." Uh-huh... Suuuuurrrreee.

You are right, of course, but I submit that it has more to do with the politicians and lawyers than the cops.

What is somewhat revolting is the concept that in many communities the police and other government officials would deny you the right to protect yourself and family. If everybody, including the police and government want to also disarm themselves then we might have a conversation. As long as those in power demand the right to protect themselves then I demand the same right.
