Check this out - Then go buy a FORD!

Post by dorminWS »

I was already threatening to abandon my beloved Chevy Tahoes for a Ford Expedition because of the bailout anyway because the Obama administration intervened in the bankruptcy to rescue two labor unions by giving then huge blocks of GM stock at the expense of GM's secured creditors. That was disgusting enough. THIS, however, is enough to induce spontaneous projectile vomiting.

Buy old, used vehicles. Brand doesn't matter. As many Americans have worked on it, it's an American car now.

Yes, but the one thing that distinguishes Ford to me is that they didn't take a bailout from the damned feds. When I was a boy, people used to derogate Fords and say that F-O-R-D stood for various things, like:

Fix Or Repair Daily, or
Found On the Road Dead, or
Fv@kin' Old Rebuilt Dodge

But for me, F-O-R-D NOW stands for:

Found Own Recovery Dollars!

And I feel like I should favor the folks at Ford with my business for that reason - even though I still prefer the ride and handling of the Tahoe.

Fords have been made in Mexico for over ten years, I had a 1997 Ford escort in college, the body was hencho en Mexico by Ford, the engine was a Mitsubishi made in Japan. Perhaps minor assembly was done here?

GM stock is a good buy for precisely the reason the video disparages; they are hugely popular in China, even GM brands that are barely clinging to life here, such as the Buick are serious status symbols there and sell accordingly among Chinas nouveau riche.

It has been far longer than that. A large number of "American" cars also come from Canada. One minor point, your old Ford probably had a Mazda engine, a smaller chance of it being a Nissan engine. Mitsubishi's ties have been with Chrysler.

Ford's started coming out of Mexico in 1988 when they teamed up with Mazda, I was working at a Lincoln/Mercury dealer then.

It was Japanese and started with an "M", so, you're probably right. It was over a decade ago and in any event the car died spectacularly at least, unfortunately I was driving it at the time when it decided to kamikaze into a guardrail.

I've never driven a Tahoe but have a 97 F-150 myself. Works great for me, only thing I wish it had was a 5.4 instead of a 4.6. 4.6 is more than enough for a daily driver but I kinda enjoy acceleration.

Ford and Mazda had strong ties for years. The Mazda Navaho was a Ford Explorer 2 door SUV.

I bought my wife a new Ford Fusion 3 years ago partly due to GM taking my tax money and partly due to issues with my 2005 Silverado. The Silverado has abou 70,000 easy miles on it. The pinion seal leaks. The CD player quit about 4 years ago. The brake lines rusted so badly I blew on out coming home from work last fall. The AC works most of the time but every now and then it decides to blow hot air vs. cold air. The front brake rotors wore unevenly.

My old Ford F150 (90 model) had 251,000 miles on it when I (made the mistake of) traded it in on the wife's Fusion. It still had the original engine, transmission, transfer case, clutch/pressue plate, starter, etc. In 250,000 miles both gas tanks had rusted holes in them, the tires had worn out a few times, the brake pads (front) and brake shoes and drums (replaced drums once) had been replaced. The exhaust system had been replaced one time. It went through 2 batteries. One radio (radio worked great, I just wanted a CD player, too). I should have traded off the 95 S10 blazer and kept the F150.

I bought a new car last year (Hyundai) and looked at the Mustang and Camaro. If I'd not bought the Coupe my second choice would have been the Mustang over the Camaro. I don't care for Chevrolet's idea of how to gouge the customer by charging extra for every little option. The Coupe came with everything but wheel locks, cargo net in the trunk, floor protector in the trunk, I pod cable and some quick adjust gizmos for the front wheels (for racing).

No new Chevrolets for me (and I have a garage full of them - 74 Camaro, 81 Z28, 83 Z28, 86 IROC (2), 96 S10 Blazer and the 2005 Silverado. I'll keep what I've got but won't buy more.

The Ford Mustang was named after the P-51 Mustang from WWII. It's heritage comes from this great fighter aircraft. My Mustang has the decal markings from a fighter called Petie 2nd from the 352nd Fighter Squadron, "The Bluenosers".

Not only is it a daily driver, but has won many awards and the appreciation from those who "get it" including surviving members of the 352nd FG.

My last vehicle purchase was in 2008 and was a Hyundai. Still going strong after 158k miles and I'd definitely get another one. "US" automakers are so far behind the foreign competition.

I've put 180k-220k on all my Tahoes, and except for the two that got wrecked (I did one and SWMBO did one) they were all running like a Singer sewing machine when I replaced them. Foreign automakers have no monopoly on quarter-million-mile vehicles. Detroit iron (with the possible exception of Chrysler) easily lasts 2-3 times as many miles as it did when I was a boy.

As for who builds a totally US-made vehicle, it's no secret that nobody does. That's old news. I remember way back in the '80s when the Japanese student got shot and killed at Halloween (in New Orleans, I think) because he showed up at the wrong door in a mask, and the Japanese Ambassador was advocating that the USA institute strict gun control so it could never happen again. I got REALLY ticked off at the Japanese. I wrote that Ambassador a letter and told him our company was operating 12-15 Datsun forlklift trucks, and that from that day forward we would NEVER buy another Japanese forklift as long as I had any control over it. Then I found out that there WAS no decent US-built forklift available. Even Caterpillar was built in Canada; and their forklifts are crappy.

So there ain't but so much you can do. But I CAN refuse to buy GM vehicles and support the bailout and rescue of the UAW from the consequences of their own irresponsibility.

I put 275k on my 00 Honda CRV and she still ran tip top when I got rid of it.

It was a gutless transportation vehicle and at the end of the 275 i was about ready to pull my hair out, lol but it was a good vehicle.

My new jeep has already had two CEL. :0/

Had a 2006 v6 Hyundai Sonata....thing was a blast to drive and never seemed to need a repair.

Gave it to my dad before I left NY and we only kept our RAV4, which is like driving a lego block with wheels. It gets worse though, when the lease is up we gotta get a minivan.
