275gal of Diesel, What to do?

Post by Wolvee »

I was just given 275gal of old Diesel fuel that was intended when it was bought years ago as a 3rd source of heat in a home.

I don't have any Diesel generators or anything Diesel really to make use of it so I'm looking for ideas.

A friend on YT bought a 96 turbo diesel VW car and has had very good luck with it for a commuter car. That is really the only idea I've been thinking about. That would be a third vehicle to work around the property and basic transportation for project related stuff. If I can get a light weight car or truck I could get about a years worth of driving for next to nothing.

The last couple of generators I've had, I used twice a year for about a day each so I'm hesitant to get a diesel generator just to use once or twice a year.

Thanks,
Mike Wolvee

old.. define old. days, months, years, decades?

How was it stored?

If it is very old, it may be little more than a heat source due to fugi growth, degrade, or other problems that would make me not want to run it in a combustion engine that I cared about.

Im going to guess it is up to ten years old and is stored in 55gal drums.

I cant assume it is the best condition so i thought i would filter and use some stabilizers.

I understand its not ideal but it has to have some sort of use.

Unless it has been stored with absolutely no possible moisture contamination as a diesel mech. I'd recommend not using it. Algae growth is one ill side effect, fungi as already mentioned is a possibility. You might be fortunate - strain/filter, treat it with a good fuel treatment...ie AmsOil, but again I'd be reluctant. Its to late for stabilizers... they help keep fuel from breaking down, they don't put it back together after break down has occurred.

Its practical use is a waste oil. Should be useable in a heater, but even filtered I wouldn't use it in a engine.

hey, I'll take it off your hands!

really - 275 gallons of oil old or not I can burn it in my VW or LD-465.
I'm in ALexandria, let me know what you plan on doing - I can pick up.
