Most dependable, easily repairable Truck.

Post by Reverenddel »

I'm soliciting opinions on easily repairable/dependable trucks.

Not really a BugOut/SHTF vehicle, more for camping, off-road access for hunting, "getting away".

Any advice would be helpful! Thanks!

I submit that an older model Chevy Tahoe or Suburban would be easier to maintain AND find parts for; and probably cheaper. Back around 2000; when they still had the old 350 V-8.

M35A2. $3K, 6x6, runs on diesel, kerosene, used motor oil, vegetable oil. If you can't get there in that truck, you probably need a horse!

Second for the Toyota. Or a 1950's Ford.

Jeep Cherokee in a 6 cylinder. Their just priced high in comparison with the rest of the car market and they're small. If you can do small and you can pay for it then I would go jeep Cherokee.

Where do you see a drivable (i.e. "running") M35A2 for $3k?

Gone are the days when you could buy a Deuce-and-a-half for cheap.

You can still buy them on gov auction for cheap but you are buying a 50/50 chance it is messed up big time. Some of them only have 19k miles on them..

might have to drive a bit.... They also have thousands of pounds of once used brass, ammo cans ect...

4th page with a few current auctions of deuces's... This is the site where eastern gets thier trucks from.

That could be a good deal if you're able to handle a fixer-upper. But big diesel trucks need big tools and big money when they break.

Then again, where else would you find a vehicle that runs on anything from moonshine to cow piss?. (Or is that redundant?)

Does Fairfax have a "No deuce and a half" ordinance? Can you cite?

There at least OUGHT to be a difference. But then I never drank any cow piss, and your comment suggests you never drank any GOOD moonshine. Pity. Maybe someday some benevolent Hillbilly will bring you to the light.

Nothing wrong with a F150, but I would go with one that was built before they had an ECM.

In other words, a good old Farmer Brown pickup truck.

I have a 2006 F250 and it's pretty damn easy to work on considering the complexity of new vehicles these days. Had it for 6 years now since new and not one issue. Maybe not my first choice for a bug-out vehicle due to overall size (super crew, 8 ft. bed), but it's paid for so it will do nicely. As for off-roading and/or camping, size can work against you with a truck this big. With oversized tires it is formidable truck and I can tackle a lot of different terrains, but off-road trails aren't always very big, which can work against you with a large truck.
