IZHMASH Saiga 12

Post by Djskrilla »

Only been here a month and I'm going gun crazy.

Waiting on parts so I can convert it back to it's original form (not neutered).
I picked it up on a whim when I already have a spikes tactical AR-15 on its way...someone cure me of this disease!

Just got my parts in today...well most of them.

If anyone has done the conversion before, speak up if you have any tips...cause I gotta do some drilling, grinding, and some touching up.

Why? All my life, I've been addicted to sex as badly or maybe a little worse (in my younger days) as I am addicted to buying firearms, and both of these addictions have cost me dearly. But in spite of that, I've never WANTED, not for one dang second, to be cured of either affliction.

What's the MATTER with you, boy?

Looks like it'll be fun! Where in NoVA are you located? I wish I could help, but don't have the guts to take a drill to my guns!

Stage 1 complete except for new foregrip on its way..

For anyone that does this in the future, pay SPECIAL attention to the springs when re-assembling...they are a PITA. AND I actually had to grind down parts of the safety to get it back into place...but you never know how your Saiga will be. And yes my safety still works, I tested it extensively.

Stage 2 dunno yet..

I saw that episode on Sons of Guns....wish I hadn't.

How involved is it shortening the barrel? I can only see shortening it by few inches due to fed laws and gas issues...until I get the bolt/carrier polished.

Involved from a technical standpoint or a legal one? Technically it's usually going to involve opening up the gas port (or drilling more ports); a fluff 'n' buff on the action can help too. You can get lots of info at the Saiga-12 forum.

Both Saiga 12s I have are short. The 14" one has four gas ports. It's not as reliable as the 8", but the conversion was done by a local shop that doesn't usually work on AKs, whereas the 8" is a Tromix gun (and it really is that sweet - Tromix Saigas are worth the money and the wait).

You might want to look at MD Arm's gas adjustment "V" plug, which has 5 adjustment positions versus the factory 2.

Did you do the paperwork and tax stamp to ATF for the shortened barrel? I haven't looked at my gas ports yet, but I'm assuming I have 3 based on how it performed when I first shot 1300fps slugs.

When a shotgun barrel goes under 18", it has to be registered with the feds in order to stay legal, both federally and with the commonwealth. No reputable manufacturer will make a short shotgun without registering it, and no reputable dealer will transfer a short shotgun without paperwork.

It's not difficult, getting a loan at the bank requires more paperwork, the main issue now is the wait for approval, which is about six months (and likely to increase).

Looks badass. The saiga is
My next purchase!! Have you visited the saiga -12.com forum? Plenty of info over there. What paint did you use when you moved the control group forward? Also, I see Tac 47 has an auto plug compared to the MD.

I was all over that forum..that's how I learned how to do the conversion. Next step now is taking off the gas block and slightly increasing the size of the vent holes for low brass.

I just used Matte Black rustoleum engine block spray for now. I plan on doing a full paint job when I get everything done. It's 50/50 with the auto plug..they did some extensive tests and found out it creates the least amount of "wear & tear", but lets in the smallest possible amount of gas resulting in FTEs every now and then. But of course it automates everything for people that don't want to touch it.

Right now I have the V plug and it's working great so far.
