A couple questions for all of you:
-I'm looking at buying another revolver, this time something traditional and reliable as a home defense gun. I have a single action army that sort of fills that purpose now, but I'd ideally like something double action. I am in particular drawn to the older Smith and Wesson Model 10 guns. I'm a fan of 38 special and have a lot of the ammo around. Where would be a decent place where I could buy one of these guns in the northern VA area, say Fairfax county area? I haven't seen one locally, though admit I haven't been looking for a long time either. Most places seem bent on selling new guns, but I am drawn to the pencil barrel Model 10s in particular.
-The better half wants a Walther PPQ sometime this year. Anyone have a review of that gun? I imagine I could locate one at any decent dealer selling new Walthers.

Re: Need Some Advice
I'd be looking at gun shows in your area for older Smiths. I think there's a big one on the weekend of Feb 10, 11 & 12 at the Dulles Expo Center in Chantilly
Re: Need Some Advice
Although not local, I would at least consider one of these. I've had good experiences with internet purchases.

Regarding the PPQ... I want one too. I've handled one in a gun store and I continue to hear nothing but great things about the PPQ.

Re: Need Some Advice
Success on the Smith and Wesson at the Nation's Gun Show. I landed a pretty nice pencil barrel 10-5 from the 1970s. Price was somewhat premium, but then again the condition was really good and it appears to have seen little use. Good call on the gun show idea, there were actually several 10s there, and the particular one I got grabbed my eye the best of them. It's a pencil barrel .38 special. It seems as though it will be a simple, solid gun, though the real proof will be when I take it to the range sometime soon.
My fiancee found that she really does like the feel of the PPQ, though passed on it for the time being because she thought the prices a little on the high side. $520 or so was about the best price she found, though I guess shows are known for being on the high side of price. Then again, these seem to be out there and at a variety of places, whereas the Smith was more a specific, older item that would be harder to find a selection for in person. I do see her getting it sometime this spring, at least.

Dark sun surplus seems to have the lowest prices at the show

Re: Need Some Advice
I've bought some guns from Dark Sun a few years back. The guy that seemed to run the "show" at the Gun Shows just treated me like crap every time I tried to look at, pick up, buy a gun. I eventually quit even stopping to look at their tables. I haven't seem him at the Dark Sun tables the last 4 or 5 shows so maybe he either got promoted "up" in the organization or "out" of the organization. I may start looking their tables over again in the future and buying something when I see the right price on the right gun. There is more to getting a good deal than just the price. If the service or attitude is for crap then I'll pay a little more somewhere else to deal with a better attitude.
Re: Need Some Advice
I think the best price she saw on the PPQ was at a place called Grey's or Gray's or something like that. Dark Sun may have been one of the ones we just could not get close to. There are always some tables you just can't get near because they get mobbed when it's crowded like that. I sort of let her lead me where she wanted to go to look at them. She considered buying it at the show but passed, saying she wanted to shop around a little more. I did see a rather traditional Remington 1911-type pistol that looked pretty nice. I think it was the new one they came out with last year. I've passed on it for the time being, but may eventually end up getting one. There's also that giant gun/history book sale in the center of the floor, which caters to another of my vices. I ended up getting 3 books I'd had on my Christmas list but never got.
