Gun sites blocked?

Post by MNMGoneShooting »

While at Dulles International, I hung out in the business lounge for Lithuania airlines and started surfing the web.  I was shocked when I discovered this web forum was not  responding. I figured I would have to tell Rick to fix his crap.

So then I decided to go to my second most favorite site, gunsamerica.com, which also would not respond, but damn if Facebook didn't come right up!  My wife tried from the house to access the gun sites at the same time and had no problems pulling them up.

I'm trying to convince myself that this is just a coincidence, but I haven't succeeded as of yet; but I did test a few other known gun websites and had o problems getting to them.

I ran a trace route and didn't see anything similar between the two inaccessible sites, as you can see below. Maybe just a quirk? Tmobile was the provider of the Internet access.

Silly rabbit, you can't bring scary gun internets to the airport

I've run across this a few times as well. Even in some hotels.

That's why I'm packing a new Verizon 4G LTE MiFi to bring all the internets I need.

I wonder if they are blocking the NRA sites too.

How about the Brady Bunch's site?

Blocking weapons related sites is the default setting on many out of the box firewalls with filtering software. I first ran into this when I supported an Army acquisition program office responsible for purchasing weapon systems that had its people show up for work one day and they found they could no longer reach many of the defense contractor sites needed to conduct their normal business. The government computer support staff (supported lots of tenant outfits on the base) was a bit embarrassed, but they managed to fix this pretty quickly.

Chesterfield Town Center's Mall wifi blocks gun stuff. Chesterfield county also blocks gun stuff and forums but I can still access VGOF! Win!

At least everything works here in Japan - surprisingly considering their stance on weapons!

Actually, I do usually block all but US traffic to help cut down on spam, but I have since determined a different way to handle the spam problem and opened the firewall back up.

Speaking of blocking sites...I was just in the hospital in virginia beach for the past 2 days (wife was giving birth to my son!), and it was a little disappointing that both this site and vaguntrader was also blocked because it dealt with "weapons" according to the message that popped up.

Jut setup an extra home desktop or laptop to be a proxy. Then whenever you're on public wifi you can use it to go wherever you want.
