This is one of those things--you can't stop every bad thing in the world from happening. Trying to will only make it worse. It was horrible what happened. As a parent my heart breaks for the little girl and her parents. But you will never ever get all the guns out of "bad people's" hands. It simply won't happen. Now if our justice system had any sense Loughner would have already been tried, convicted and punished. He was caught red handed at the scene of the crime, there is no question of his guilt. People need to stop blaming the object and start blaming the person. Criminally insane is criminally insane and if he had not had a gun he would have had an ax, a machete,a large knife, he could have thrown a molotov cocktail, or had a sling shot the list of possible weapons go on and on. Don't focus on the weapon used focus on the criminal who used it.

Loughner legally purchased a gun from a licensed dealer even after college officials removed him from the school because of mental health issues.

"It's entirely possible Jared Loughner might not have bought the Glock" if his admission of drug use to the army or mental health problems were known, said New York Sen. Chuck Schumer, a Democrat, who led the subcommittee hearing.

We walk a fine line with letting the government decide who can and who can not own firearms based on an individual's mental status. But I think the writing was on the wall concerning Loughner. I'm thinking the same with Cho.
Laws are already on the books concerning crazy people. Certainly some reporting measure should have been taken concerning these guys.
