sportsman license and hunting license

Post by FreelanceEMT »

Does anyone know the difference between the sportsman license and a hunting license? This is the first year I'm purchasing a license and I was a little confused by the Game and Inland Fisheries website. Thanks in advance!

A hunting license (by itself) allows you to hunt small game and most birds with "modern firearms". For bear, deer, turkey, you must purchase a big game tags in addition to the hunting license. For ducks, you must purchase a duck stamp and a hunting license.

A sportsman license Includes hunting license, bear, deer, turkey license, archery license, crossbow license, muzzleloading license, freshwater fishing license, and trout license.

Ah I read further down and they have another box for large game. I thought a hunting license was a license. So much headache. No wonder I never bothered getting one before. But this year I'm hunting with some friends not just private land so thought I better play it safe. Thank you for the help!

The DNR posts their hunting guide online and you should read it before hunting in VA. It has all the regs and seasons for the different species listed. The DNR also offers, hunting courses that cover gun safety as well as the basics of the regulations, these courses are free and last 9 hours. Some waterfowl also require you get a federal tag to hunt them in addition to the state ones.

I don't know what DNR is but I did a search for it(DNR+hunting) in google and I got linked to Indiana laws. Couldn't find one linked to VA laws. Do you have the link or what the letters DNR stands for? In my line of work DNR stands for Do Not Resuscitate, which I have always followed when it comes to hunting animals lol

I believe DNR= Department of Natural Resources. I could be wrong, others can chime in.

Ok I'll google that with virginia and see what comes up. I've always hunted on private land and I know the law says you don't need a hunting license for private land, but this year I'm planning on going with my best friend and maybe with my girlfriends father. I'm hopping he isn't taking me into the woods for a little "hunting accident"

The website you want is www.HuntFishVA.com. It will take you to the Va. Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. On the left hand side click on Hunting and then Hunter Education. I took the course Saturday a week ago. It was time well spent.

I did a hunter education thing when I was really young. My mom insisted I do it before I was allowed to go hunting with my grandfather. Amazingly I still have the card showing I completed it. So I shouldn't have trouble getting a hunting license. I'm just confused with the whole process. To be honest I think it's wrong we have to pay to hunt for animals that are over populated right now. But that's just me.

Freelance what type of hunting are you planning? Private land, or Public? Bow, Crossbow, Muzzleloader or rifle. and I'll try to de-mud if I can.

Here is the link to the Hunting and trapping in Virginia guide in PDF format.
