Cross Country Carry

Post by rlbellco72 »

I'll be going on Vacation soon and was considering carrying while I travel. So far I have looked and found that West Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, Texas, Oklhoma, and Mo have reciprocity with VA. Illinois doesnt. I was kinda of hoping that there may be someone out there that could verifiy my info for me. I used http://www.usacarry.com to get my information. Has anybody used this sight before? And if so did you find them trustworthy? Thanks in advance.

Carry concealed, obey all laws and hope you don't have to use/show. Even though some states carry reciprocity with Va., it doesn't mean all police will honor it. When in Illinois, keep it in the trunk and the ammo in the glove compartment. Just my honest opinion. As for trusting the site, we have some very good lawyers here that can answer that question. Look at the upper left hand corner of this page.

I find http://www.handgunlaw.us/ to be the best and most current site for multi-state permit info.

I used the same site when I moved up from Texas and I just made sure the guns was locked in the back when I was in "unfriendly" territory.

Personally I would avoid Illinois if at all possible - Kentucky also goes all the way to Missouri though you may have to detour south as far as Nashville TN if you want to stay on the interstates. US127 might be a decent road to cut across in Kentucky from I65 to I24, though.

If you don't have an Illinois FOID, don't bring a gun into Illinois. Yes, that is correct. The only way you will be protected by the FOPA is if you don't stop in Illinois. They WILL arrest you if you are caught with a pistol in Illinois.

Didn't Illinois recently decide that out of state carry permits were adequate substitutes for a FOID?

There's a court case going on now about this. The state of Illinois arrested from out of state and confiscated their pistol, even though they weren't carrying, and the pistol was in the vehicle.

I carried through West Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana. I spent the night in Indiana and then put my weapon in my gun case and separated the ammo for the trip through Illinois. Put it back on in Missouri. My son has a friend that is a retired Police Officer with lots of toys! I had the opportunity to fire an AR 15 with a bump stock on it. Fired 20 rounds in roughly 4 seconds with it. AWESOME! Also fired an AK-47 and a couple of other rifles which I forget what they were. So far it's been a good vacation!

I am waaaaay too tired. I was like, why would you carry at a cross country meet? Besides, guns are forbidden at school functions.

Have a safe trip!

Thanks Frank. I was visiting my son in Missouri. He is a pastor at a church in Cuba, MO. It wasn't a meet and greet, but there is a retired LEO that is a member of the church that has 70 acres of land with a private gun range. It was a blast! The guy had a lot of neat toys, if you know what I mean! As soon as I get the pictures off my phone I am going to post it here.

Have a great day everyone!

Besides the AR-15 and AK-47, I shot a .45 CAL tactical rifle, Colt M1911-A1C, Kel-Tec .40 Cal Sub-2000(folded in half) , Smith&Wesson tactical .22 cal and my son's .40 cal Hi-Point. All in all it has been a good trip. I am in Texas now visiting my Daughter.

I will be heading back to Virginia Saturday morning and carrying all the way. I'll be going through Arkansas, Tenessee, and into Virginy! Along the way I have been checking the laws of each state I have been in and with the exception of Illinois I have carried or will be carrying in all of them. How great is that? :hysterical:
